SNL: Melissa McCarthy Sing And Dances; Chris Rock Blacktacular On Broadway; Netflix Apologizes … And Apologizes …; Tyler Perry As Highest-Paid Entertainer
Melissa McCarthy’s hot streak continues as the new “It” girl helped Saturday Night Live beat the second-week slump. Last night’s edition of NBC’s late-night show, hosted by McCarthy with musical guest Lady Antebellum, drew a 5.2 rating/13 share in metered-market households. That was up 4% from SNL‘s season premiere last week (5.0/13), which marked Alec Baldwin’s record 16th turn as host. (That rating was later adjusted up to a 5.1, giving McCarthy a 2% edge over Baldwin.) Yesterday’s SNL also was up 8% vs. the same night last year. In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, SNL averaged a 2.7/12 in adults 18-49, up a tenth from last week.

Not surprised at all. Fat America loves seeing a fat girl succeed, when the opposite should be true – being fat is not healthy or glamorous. It is dangerous and irresponsible behavior and should not be rewarded. Shame on America.
Thanks for the buzzkill.
Be honest, Not Surprised. You LOVED it!!! Especially during the Ranch Dressing sketch. You couldn’t help yourself. That stuff was funny!!
Melissa McCarthy’s talent doesn’t stem from her being overweight and her success doesn’t glamorize one body type over another. However, it is nice to see someone who is a great entertainer but who doesn’t fit the typical Hollywood mold of what is or should be acceptable on TV and film receive some recognition for a change instead of being ignored and swept under the rug for some anorexic fashionista who couldn’t act her way out of a paper bag. People, thin or overweight, respond to Melissa because she’s genuinely funny. So funny that you forget how awful SNL’s writing usually is because every sketch she was in she made hilarious.
Including overweight people in TV and film productions isn’t dangerous nor irresponsible. Encouraging people to be fatphobic and obsess over size rather than genuine medical health is far more irresponsible and dangerous, and leads to increasingly more eating disorders like anorexia and overeating in our society. You don’t have to look like a fashion model or a typical Hollywood star to be truly healthy.
wonderfully put. thank you.
Michelle!!! Er, I mean, Madame First Lady. I had no idea you were on Deadline. Welcome!
So what, anyone who doesn’t meet your standard of skinniness should just hide out in their homes and not dare to show their face in public? Who cares if Melissa McCarthy is fat, she’s awesome and hilarious and I’d like to see a lot more of her on my TV.
what are you, a weight Nazi??
Oh come off it. Fat America – it was Hollywood who gave her an Emmy who are mainly size 2 or zero! The writing was actually funny and her delivery was spot on. I actually laughed at most of the episodes instead of playing my games while the tv provided background. Everytime an actor(ress) gains a pound or loses a pound it’s news – baloney – lighten up – it’s only tv not the gospel.
You are a moron. Her success is due to the fact that she is funny. And she was quite awesome on SNL. Fat or not – she is a great comedic talent. And – why does everyone talk about her weight, but not all the fat male comedic actors? There are loads of tubby funny guys – but put a fat girl out there and somehow it’s a big deal.
I say – good for her! And if you don’t like it – don’t watch!
It actually has all to do with that fact that she is a great talent and incredibly funny, and magnetic. many people you love are thin because of anorexic or bulimic behavior, which, if you knew anything, comes from the same pathology as some cases of obesity. but they look pretty so you don’t give it a second thought, do you? how comforting to know you can judge people from worthless glass tower.
Kiss my FAT ass
Awesome. I love Melissa McCarthy. Sadly I missed last night as I wasn’t home.
She was awesome – I hope Hollywood gives her a lot more to do.
She’s got a LOT in development.
There was an “It” musical act there too. C’mon, spread the credit. Lady Antebellum is on fire as well. I think the combo proved a good fit for ratings.
Not to take anything away from Melissa McCarthy…
Yes, Lady Antebellum deserves some of the credit, too, for the good ratings. They are one of the few truly sucessful crossover acts in music today, and, draw a big country and pop audience….and more adults than, say, a Taylor Swift would SNLs music problem is that when they go “country” they bring in people like Wilco and Ryan Adams…who have critical acclaim but no mainstream audience.
Bridesmaids 2 needs to be about M McCarthy’s character getting married to the military guy from part 1 and having a destination wedding, only episonage or kidnapping or something take place and all the wacky bridesmaids have to rescue someone – maybe the Rose Byrne princess character.
Being a size 0 or 2 isn’t healthy or glamorous, either. There’s nothing wrong with a woman who looks closer to the American average (sz. 12) and owns it completely. She has more confidence in a pinky than women do a third her size and that’s what makes her a joy to watch so maybe you should stop being so judgmental.
OhComeOn is right, Lady Antebellum has something to do with this, too. Based on my friends and family, I’m quite sure there were a couple people with boxes watching that normally wouldn’t do SNL on a bet
That’s the primary reason I tuned in… although I am an occasional SNL watcher anyway. In my opinion, the show just wasn’t very funny.
I think that chick was refreshing and authentic. As a slender gal I don’t see any relationship between really liking her performance and claiming it’s OK and great to be fat. What’s up with that? She did a great job. Thank the lord it wasn’t Kathy Griffin talking about her love for the little boy in Alaska (Levi) or what’s her name pretending to be Sarah Palin for the 4th year. Thank you for moving on FINALLY SNL. You guys used to be so great, and you’re off to a great return.
that is ridiculous. Melissa is a stellar actress. She is not being rewarded for size but for talent. It’s been a LONG time coming. Hollywood rarely rewards any woman under a size 4 and that is what’s disgusting!!! Real woman should be on TV.
Another underrated actress the Hollywood media is trying to shove down our throats. Kirsten Wiig and Bridesmaids was WWWAAAYYY overrated. Melissa McCarthy’s character was just like any other fat slob in any other raunchy comedy only this time it’s played by a female so all the critics go gaga for it.
You do know what “underrated” means, right?
Sadly, Jk, jb does not. He also would not know comedy if it hit him in the nuts.
I like MM. Still haven’t watched “Mike & Molly.” Would like to rent it on Blu-ray (or buy if it ever gets real cheap…Black Friday maybe). But I hope she’s not confined to her “Bridesmaids” role. Everyone loved her in it. I didn’t. Of course they had to take the heavy gal and make her a crude, obnoxious tomboy. She’s cute. Let her play a cute gal. She’s funny. Don’t pigeonhole her into stupid fart jokes.
Melissa McCarthy & Lady A, rocked SNL last night.
Kudos!!!!! to the writers. The skits were all funny, which hasn’t been the case for a while.
MM has the whit and charm of Cris Farley. She went for it and it worked BIG TIME.
I LMFAO at the: Hidden Valley Ranch, HPV Doll and Comments.
Now if you didn’t find the humor in the show as I did last night
“Go Kill Yourself.” Muhahahahhahahhahaha
I must have seen a completely different show. Like McCarthy, but not this episode. Lots of missed opportunities.
Good for her. Now maybe Mike & Molly will get better writers for her. Her talent is above that show. Her co-star should of been louis ck
Melissa is fun to watch because she is what few actors are: absolutely fearless.
McCarthy did a great job despite the lack of help from the writers. It almost seemed like they wanted her for the show strictly because of Bridesmaids, so they made nearly every character she played Bridesmaids-like.
I totally agree.
I was thankful that Kristen Wiig wasn’t in every single sketch for a change. Not sure why it’s still called SNL when it should just be The Kristen Wiig Show. It’s bad enough how awful the writing always is on SNL but to have her shoved down our throats when most people tune in for the guest star and/or musical act is an even bigger turn off. For the first time in years I was able to get through an entire episode without deleting it before the Weekend Update, although I was still fast forwarding through the sketches Melissa wasn’t in. Needless to say Melissa McCarthy absolutely killed it last night! People need to get over her size and deal with their body issues on their own instead of projecting their self loathing onto her and any female actor that is bigger than a size 2. Talk all you want but you’re revealing more about yourself than you’re saying about them.
Actually that was Melissa’s creative choice when she went in for the audition.
I enjoyed Anne Hathaway more when she hosted SNL. Her impressions of Mary Poppins, Katie Holmes, and Judy Garland were absolutely brilliant.
Nice to see a real woman for a change and not some negative size zero who has no talent to speak other than her surgically enhanced chest.
Also Melissa is laughing all the way to the bank with her millions of dollars, so there.
Flipping the remote, I happened on the Hidden Valley Ranch sketch. I’ve never seen anything else she’s done – I might have to see Bridesmaids…uh, maybe not – but she was fantastic. She sold that character and didn’t back off from the silliness like a lesser comedian would have. Also it was great to see someone on SNL actually take the time to memorize some lines for the sake of timing. The usual awkward pauses while the guest host searches for the TelePrompter are pathetic.
I don’t think her size has anything to do with her comedy. Every SNL character she played could have been played by Kristin Wiig, without any changes. It’s about having an outside personality and the confidence to pull it off. Kudos to Ms. McCarthy and to Ms. Wiig for being two of the funniest women in entertainment right now.
Seems to me that one of the reasons she was outstanding in this episode is that they were giving her the outrageous roles they’d normally give to Kristen Wiig. Wiig’s great, but overused on SNL. Giving those types of characters to the guest (and having guests who can step up to play them), rather than relegating the guests to supporting status in Wiig sketches, would be better for the guest and for the show.
Melissa McCarthy has been making audiences at the Groundlings pee their pants with laughter for many years before her SNL appearance. She is incredibly funny and always has been. It doesn’t have to do with her size. It’s because she is a true talent. Her comedic talents weren’t really shown until BRIDESMAIDS. I love that it’s totally ok in the eyes of Hollywood to be grossly underweight. No one cares about that. In fact it’s expected. If you are overweight and god forbid a girl, you stand very little chance. That is until a hit like BRIDESMAIDS happens then suddenly every agent and studio is coming out of the woodwork. Funny is funny. Stop looking at the size of the person and focus on the size of the talent in front of you. For some reason Hollywood just doesn’t get that.
the weather was also pretty bad on Saturday.
I was glad to see her do well… but anyone who has seen her at the groundlings can tell you that both Arlene and the Hidden Valley Ranch sketches are well tested from doing them night in night out at the groundlings.
She’s definitely a talent… but I was slightly disappointed to see those sketches which have been in her back pocket for a while. Don’t get me wrong, they’re hilarious and most of America hasn’t seen them… but it would have been nice to see something new.
