NBC has bought one-hour drama pitch The Meadows from husband-and-wife Memphis Beat creators Liz Garcia and Joshua Harto, while Jamie Tarses’ Sony TV-based company has sold two more comedy pitches: Teresa Strasser’s Mother Teresa to ABC and an untitled David Lampson/Andrew Leeds project to Fox.
Described as a complex, high-stakes, character-driven drama that takes place both in the 1960s and the present, The Meadows will be executive produced by Scott Stuber and his development executive Quan Phung through Universal Television, where Stuber Pictures has an overall deal. It follows two parallel storylines: In the ’60s, Lucia ‘Lucy’ Cortes, a Mexican-American who’s fled an abusive marriage with her 12-year-old son Tommy, starts her life over in Las Vegas. In present day, Tommy is a powerful, enigmatic casino owner poised to become the King of Vegas. The show chronicles how the outsider from the wrong side of the tracks was able to rise to the top and explores the dark mystery that threatens to take it all away from him. Garcia and Harto, repped by CAA and Madhouse Entertainment, are the creators/executive producers of TNT Memphis Beat, which is on the bubble after completing its second season. Additionally, Garcia is writing the feature French Women Don’t Get Fat for Hillary Swank to produce for Alcon Entertainment.
ABC’s single-camera Mother Teresa will be written by Teresa Strasser based on her book Exploiting My Baby: Because It’s Exploiting Me. It centers on a working mom whose slightly estranged, hippy mother comes back to live with them to take care of the new baby. The Lampson/Leeds comedy at Fox is about a larger-than-life family man who constantly finds himself overly involved in the lives of those around him to help them reach their full potential.

The Meadows is a pitch that I like. Hopefully it makes it to series, I’d probably watch it. Though, for a show set in Vegas, I’m surprised its called the meadows unless I’m missing something in terms of vegas geography/lingo.
The spanish translation of “Las Vegas” is “the meadows”.
Finally! A network show that is actually about something! Meadows sounds great, so different from all the other shows out there. Can’t wait!
I hope Memphis beat gets picked up too! That show has so much potential!
Do we know if memphis beat is coming back? I hope so. Meadows sounds like a great idea – lets see if NBC can get this one to stick around. GO garcia/harto!
can anyone explain the Jamie Tarses phenomena? why do they keep buying shows from her? she’s a lovely person, but has she ever EP’d a decent comedy? and please don’t say Happy Endings or My Boys. i watch HE’s when i run out of things to watch, but it’s not good, i’m just amused by a couple of the cast members. and MB’s was dreck. is it strictly her relationships? because it’s clearly not her taste.
She dresses well and likes to play producer finding writers who need a little help.
She is a non writing, lucky co ep with many pals thats all
Its better than hanging out and having lunches, let her have a place to go everyday, who cares what shows turn out, will it matter five years from now??
Tarses is an Enigma..no taste zero!
But knows the Network talk talk talk ..she was one and knows the words..like The Tannenbums
Eric and Kim..failure after failure after failure
And thankfully they made 20 million from 2.5
But Chuck made 200 million
Las Vegas in English is .the meadows. Weird for a desert town, but true.
Kudos to Teresa Strasser.
Say what you will about her but she has a real talent for swearing better than half the men I know.
And yes, in this modern world, that’s a thing.
I’m sure her mother will be relieved to know she can’t use the show for therapy.
Loved that book! Teresa’s such a funny writer – hope we get to see how that translates to television.
Love Teresa! She was so funny on the Adam Carolla Show and her book is hilarious.
This book is seriously so funny can’t wait to see how they translate it to the small screen. Really refreshing to see a smart, funny and honest female getting her due in Hollywood. Love T!
Great for L&J. Now when is TNT announcing the return of Memphis Beat? Soooo much they could do with a 3rd season.
I am so disappointed that memphis Beat was cancelled everyone I know who watch it. They all agreed it was a great show and have been trying to find out when it would be back. I hope it will be picked up by another channel
How could you cancel one of the best shows on TV? Memphis Beat had a perfect cast, story line & music. It had the ability to make me feel good just watching it & I had been waiting impatiently for its return. Please bring it back!!!
How could TNT cancel one of it’s best shows like Memphis beat? they then kept on some other shows that stink. I wish another network would pick it up. I have been a faithful watcher of Memphis Beat. Did anyone notice they canceled both shows for that night? May tuesdays was a bad night and they should have tried it on a diffeent night. I am soooo sad.
Teresa Strasser is a huge huge talent. I kept wondering why she wasn’t snapped up sooner… I’ve been following her since her column at The Jewish Journal (sure the one about her evil stepmother will make an episode). How rare to find a truly talented writer, beautiful woman, gifted actress/comedian and (very) smart, sensitive soul all in one. (I mean, other than Sarah Silverman).
I don’t know what you sold to TNT in place of Memphis Beat, but , I can tell you this…You made an awful mistake and you should get down on your knees and beg the stars of this show to come back and renew the series and their contracts. I am so sick of stupid reality shows and game shows and sports junk I could throw up. You get a good show and then you cancell it…Sounds to me like you need to fire some people that make these stupid decisions
I loved Memphis beat and Jason lee were going to miss that show very much
I can’t believe that Memphis Beat has been canceled. We loved this show and have been waiting and watching to see when it was coming back on. This was a great show, we enjoyed it so much and the music at the end was a plus. Please bring this show back. It seems when we get something you really like on TV, thats the show that always gets taken off. I agree with the above on all the reality shows. I am sick and tired of all of them. You can’t turn on the TV without a new reality show coming on. Please lets get back to some real television without the fighting, drunkeness, showing off how stupid people can be and the bleeping of filthy language.
Try to sell “Memphis Beat” again.. Good show!!!!
