UPDATED: Steven Soderbergh’s long-gestating Liberace feature is headed to HBO. HBO Films has greenlighted for production Behind The Candelabra, which will be directed by Soderbergh. It takes a behind-the-scenes look at the tempestuous relationship between legendary entertainer Liberace, played by Michel Douglas, and Scott Thorson, his younger limo driver and live-in lover, played by Matt Damon. The actors had been attached to the project when it was a feature, which also had Richard LaGravenese writing and Jerry Weintraub producing. Weintraub will now executive produce, with Gregory Jacobs and Susan Ekins producing. Soderbergh will direct from a script by LaGravenese. “This is a story that’s going to surprise a lot of people,” said HBO Films president Len Amato. “It’s funny, heartbreaking and always fascinating, and we are delighted that Jerry and Steven brought the film to HBO.”
Weintraub and Soderbergh began working on the project 3-4 years ago. They acquired Thorson’s memoir Behind The Candelabra (My Life With Liberace) and hired LaGravenese to write a script. Douglas and Damon then came on board to star but the project, set at Warner Bros., was dealt a setback when Douglas had to take time off for cancer treatment. Meanwhile, Weintraub spent time working with HBO on the documentary about his career His Way and got the idea of setting the film there. “It is a great place, and they could bring us the largest audience,” Weintraub said. Added Soderbergh, “From the inception of this project, we’ve had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it. HBO’s fearless approach to original programming and their unparalleled ability to pull in viewers make them the perfect fit for us. Apart from my hair growing back, I couldn’t be happier.” Liberace, known as much for his career as a top entertainer as he is for his flamboyant lifestyle, died in 1987 from AIDS-related complications. In 1982, Thorson filed a $113-million palimony lawsuit against his employer. Most of suit was dismissed, and Thorson eventually received a small settlement, reported to be in the $95,000 range. The project reunites principals who have worked together before: Weintraub produced the Ocean’s Eleven movie franchise, which was directed by Soderbergh and co-starred Damon. Damon also starred in Soderbergh’s latest feature, Contagion and the 2009 The Informant! Meanwhile, Douglas toplined Soderbergh’s feature Traffic, which earned the director an Oscar. Behind The Candelabra will start production in summer 2012, with locations in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs. HBO has had success with films originally developed as features and have come to the pay cable channel with A-list talent already attached, including Grey Gardens starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange.Liberace

This is brilliant casting!
Douglas and Damon have the acting chops to pull this off along with top-notch makeup and hair crew. Good move HBO!
Am I the only one grossed out by this?
I’m not homophobic but why would anyone cast THESE two guys in this part.
They might as well of hired Anthony Hopkins and Gerard Butler.
No one wants to see them make-out. Yuk.
It would appear that, yep, you are the only one on here grossed out by it.
And FYI, when someone shrieks about how “grossed out” they are by something nobody has even mentioned, chances are they’re covering for being turned on by it.
Somehow I picture you complaining endlessly online about their kissing scenes, then watching them on a TIVO’d loop in your dark basement.
Also, any time someone starts to say “I’m not homophobic, but…” it’s safe to say they can leave that part out.
Can’t imagine a more wrong group of elements to tell this story. There isn’t a light touch in the bunch, less Richard LaGravanese’s pen. Feels like a train wreck of an approach to what should have been a great subject for a film.
AC you’re wrong on this one. The script was one of the best I’ve read in a long time…it’s a shame no studio would step up after Warner’s balked…but HBO is better than none
Is nobody else concerned by the fact that Thoronson was a 19 year old boy toy. Damon is a talented actor… but can he really pull of 19 year old?
He’s obvi not going to be 19 in this film.
booooh just like Grey Gardens this should have been a big screen adaptation. This was Douglas’ best shot at an invitation back to the Oscars. There might be a big audience for this in America, but these days HBO movies let alone any made for tv-films rarely screens on national primetime television in Europe.
Was he 19 all his life? Or just at the outset? Don’t know the story (obviously!) and normally would not be interested, but this is a great cast. I’ll be tempted for that reason only!
Strong team here. It’s going to be a good show.
So no painting career? Oh Steven.
Fabulith!
They are both brilliant actors – and they are both too old.
this will be great would be a great opportunity to Oscar, too bad that HBO will be summarized
I can’t picture Michael Douglas as Liberace. There’s absolutely no physical resemblence. He’s also too old.
Does anyone really want to see the haggard Michael Douglas (who looks like the stereotypical lesbian gym teacher these days) get it on with a tubby middle-aged Matt Damon? If they chose some younger (and more talented) actors, this could have been interesting. But it won’t be with those two no matter how much vaseline they slap on the cameras to try to make either actor look appealing.
But since Liberace wasn’t gay, where’s the love story?
Douglas is great casting here to be sure, but I am surprised no one is commenting on Soderbergh and his return to the director’s chair yet again when, for the last 5 years he’s told us (nary, threatened) to retire…
Douglas has been doing an uncanny impersonation of Liberace to friends for years, so given the right clothes, props and bouffant wig he will pull it off brilliantly.
I don’t need to see that!
Damon is far too old for this role. It’s not like they were together for 20 years. He was a boy toy, plain and simple, and a very young one. Casting someone who is 41 and who looks 41 (not to mention doesn’t really have much acting range) is already signaling an enormous nail in this film’s coffin.
OTOH- I think Douglas is great casting.
soo its going to be on HBO..?
This is a fantastic script with perfect casting and an awesome director. Wish the studios would have taken a flyer as the prestige package can get nominations but tough one to market.
Soderburgh has said he’s retiring after he finishes the several projects he already had in development, this being one of them.
Funniest casting! A real hoot. Has the potential to be HBO’s biggest bomb yet.
Are you trying to say that Liberace was a gay person? We’re talking about the Las Vegas crooner, right? I’m sorry but that theory just doesn’t hold water.
Yuck! Cradle rocker Michael Douglas is way too old period. He may be the same age as Liberace when he passed, but no makeup artist and lighting can turn back time when they shoot a young Liberace in the film. Transformation of a young actor to look older makes more sense. Besides, Michael looks nothing like Liberace. Matt, on the other hand is not too old for the role and I believe he will do well, as he is an excellent actor.
Michael Douglas is magic with very difficult characters and will nail it. Matt Damon is perfect for the intriguing Scott Thorson.
But The Maestros craft and art really needs to be recognised for
his brilliant rosetta stone of musicality.
Perfect casting but why not find a way for some sequence of the young Liberace ? Also I cant help but see the amazing similarity,
of visuals and moods of the young Liberace, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf; That to me, would make the film a classic masterpiece.
Seems more appropriate to cast a piano player — Kevin Kline or Jeff Goldblum. I love Matt but he’s over 40. Maybe they’ll have a younger actor for the early days. IIRC, Scott was younger than 19 when he began with old’ Walter L.
