UPDATE: Hollywood was buzzing Friday when actress Milla Jovovich took to Twitter to bitchslap Summit Entertainment over the promotion for Three Musketeers 3D. Jovovich texted that the film wasn’t marketed as a “fun family film” and that Summit is “resting on their laurels” because of the Twilight franchise and “making no effort” for her film. (See below). So I asked Summit last night what it thought of Milla’s accusations, and an executive pointed out that the actress had been up in Canada shooting the next Resident Evil installment “and working 15-hour days and probably
didn’t see the campaign. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about and we don’t know where she’s coming from.” On the other hand, Jovovich is married to Three Musketeers 3D director Paul W.S. Anderson, so it’s hard to imagine she is completely clueless to how Summit marketed the film. Nevertheless, Summit points to awareness in the 80s as a sure sign that the movie was marketed adequately even if U.S. grosses were terrible. “Wouldn’t you think she would call us first about this? It’s frustrating. it’s not the right way to behave. If she has a problem then come to the studio and talk about it.” Milla was tweeting on her flight to Japan where Three Musketeers 3D is debuting at the Tokyo International Film Festival. I wonder if Summit will cancel her car pickup and strand her at the airport for mouthing off.
PREVIOUS: If you don’t know that Summit Entertainment is releasing The Three Musketeers today, the film’s star Milla Jovovich says she knows why: the distributor isn’t promoting it properly. She took to her Twitter feed early this morning on her way to Tokyo, where the Paul W.S. Anderson-directed update of the swashbuckling tale is opening the Tokyo International Film Festival.
A sample:
Also, “3 musketeers” opens in the US 2night! Do you think ppl know abt the movie? Ask your friends! Do they know it’s a fun family film?
I think “summit” hve swept “3 Musketeers”, a grt family adventure film, under the rug in the US. Shame on them. SHAME ON YOU “SUMMIT”.

So Milla can use Twitter but I guess she can’t go on Rotten Tomatoes where the film has a 24% rotten rating, or read the many other tarnishing reviews of the film.
My guess is, Summit knows it’s a stinker and doesn’t want to flush any more $ down the toilet.
I read the script about a year ago and it was the worst. I’m not surprised the movie that was made from it is a stinker.
Maybe Milla should read the script next time before she deposits the check.
I agree… I heard about this reboot and wondered ..oh my god why is everything a reboot?
no one wants to read anything new anymore. it sucks! makes our jobs out here in the trenches that much harder. how can the greenlit tribes be so insecure about their jobs? I owe stock in huge companies. I GET IT. but I mean come ON! let’s see some new stories, new voices. you’d think with all the techno gear they’d be able to shoot lots of great smaller films for practically no money and still manage a profit. a profit is a profit methinks, no? or am I wrong. Does it have to be JILLLLIONS?
Has to be jillions because the studios are parts of media conglomerates generating $20+ billion in revenues.
Anything less than jillions in BO simply doesn’t move the parent company needle or advance studio careers.
$1 in profit isn’t $1 in profit – not when it is only .0000000000000001% of overall corporate profits.
That is why “Hollywood” only cares about the blockbuster – and all the creative pathologies proceed from this.
When has that ever stopped a movie from making hundreds of millions?
Yeah, RT.com is always right on the money. I mean where else are you going to see that critics think that a crappy fake documentary like PA3 is outstanding but The Thing is trash. Or that the remake of Footloose is just as good of a movie like Captain America or Thor. Speaking of the new Footloose, you gotta love that all the kids in town are insanely talented dancers that are on the same level with professionals dancers.
Eh I like Milla but… well I’ll try to be objective even though I think it looks like utter dreg… It must be frustrating to work on something and then have the studio not try to promote it.
At the same time, her husband directed it, so her perspective is definitely colored.
She is correct. It is a fun title an she is always fun! Resident Evil 5 is going to be exciting with other original members from the first one that spanned 5 films! Can’t wait!
We can only watch the re0telling of this story so many times, Milla. And this one is probably the least interesting of all the inceptions.
Milla (wife of the film’s director) is not really an unbiased observer on the topic, is she? I’d say Paul W.S. is worried the film is about to flop, and she’s preemptively getting a cover story out there blaming someone else.
And she’s flat out wrong. I’ve seen many commercials for it, as has anyone who watched any MLB Playoff games at all, and multiple trailers in-theatre. But I have enough info to judge that it sucks and that I won’t go see it.
Comment by “Rotten” couldn’t be more on the mark. The movie is sadly BAD…but where does this “Mila”come off?Marketing is not her problem. She wants control of this area…than produce lady! On the other hand…don’t. Work on your acting first and get over yourself.Does she know how many people don’t even know who she is???…this is actually amusing.,
I bet Milla doesn’t know that people are not all that into her husband and the movies he makes.
Milla and her husbands last film made 300 million dollars worldwide. She is undoubtedly the biggest female action star in the world, so yes there is an interest, but people need to know that her new film is coming out which she obviously felt the studio was not promoting properly otherwise she would not have said this.
You have heard of a chick named Angelina, right?
I’m sorry, but this is the silliest comment I’ve read in some time. Angelina Jolie is the biggest female action star in the world. Think about it. If Milla was really a huge action star, then 3 Musketeers would be doing just fine. A $3,500 PTA means any stars who had any name recognition at all could have replaced Milla with no effect on the movies bottom line. I have nothing against her; it’s just reality.
Oops! My bad. It looks like 3 Musketeers is only going to make an OW PTA of around $2,500. That means the stars of the movie did not help the film at all apart from them having the respect of name recognition. In other words, none of the stars, including Orlando Bloom, or Milla, are box office draws. Reality Bites, sometimes.
I’d give the title of biggest female action star in the world to Angelina Jolie. They might be the only two vying for the title, though. They both have drawing power, Milla mostly around the RE franchise.
Or is it the RE franchise, and not Milla, that has the drawing power. Replace Milla in RE with Kate Beckinsale, and the franchise would make more money. Replace Milla with Megan Fox, and the series would do just as well. Milla is NOT a box office draw.
Milla Jovovich is not even close to the biggest female action star in the world.
Milla made a movie that made 300 million? You sure that wasn’t pesos? Seriously, what the heck movie was that? Oh…I wouldn’t know the movie? The movie goes to another school? Can I at least see the poster…okay, that’s a poster for Inception.
Shame on Summit for actually making this movie. Who exactly was clamoring for yet another interpretation of this story? Didn’t they just do one five minutes ago?
I believe Summit only acquired the movie as a pickup. It was financed independently by German money.
Summit didnt make the movie they are only the distributors of it here in the US. The movie was made by Constantin films who actually did promote the movie internationally and thus far its international box office is about 50 million
So i can see why she would feel that summit isnt marketing it.
I would imagine Rowan Atkinson might be feeling the same way about Universal this weekend as well, seeing how they havent really promoted Johnny English Reborn a movie that has made 85 million dollars world wide so since it opened a few weeks ago, but here in the us yesterday on its opening day made only a little over a million dollars.
I saw a screening of this and it is a misfire, the fault mostly in Anderson’s directing. This film had none of the panache of Richard Lester’s version. Although the end begs for a sequel, it won’t be getting one.
Of course the ending was begging for a sequel. None of Paul W.S. Anderson’s films have a proper ending, they’re just being set up for the sequel he hopes gets made. It’s what I hate most about him as a director.
Is it possible that Summit is sweeping it “under the rug” because they know that it IS as bad as it looks?
I don’t care how they market it. All I needed to see was the Matrix like fights, huge explosions, and Milla diving off the roof and I knew it wasn’t for me. It looks like another horrible butchering of a classic story.
I thought they learned their lesson with The Musketeer.
LOL add the floating ships to your description and I’m completely on board with you.
Good for her! Sure, MUSK3TEERS is pretty bad, but they had a great script and Milla, because of the Resident Evil movies, is one of the biggest female action stars in the world, believe it or not. Summit shouldn’t have given the film short shrift. Its worldwide box office ought to be decent.
The flick did lousy biz in germany where it was first released. France as well. Its alwas a bad sign to release a 80 million dollar pic first in europe, than in the US. My bet: less than 50 mill in the states. Big question is: will paul w. Anderson direct Pompei after this dud?
AN 80 million dollar pic not A 80 million dollar pic. A before a consonant or consonant sound and AN before a vowel or vowel sound.
Oh yeah, and the trailer alone was enough for me to say NO to this film.
It was number one two weeks in a row in Germany.
Let me guess. Public school education or none at all? Homegirl needs to learn how to write.
Easy there DP – plenty of us went to public school and received excellent educations. Your comment is so snotty it’s appalling.
Using the generally awful way people (of all levels of education) write their tweets is no indicator of their intelligence or education; 140 characters does not promote classic grammar or spelling.
As you should know Ms. Parker (considering your namesake the actual Dorothy Parker ended her formal education at age 13), using “public school” as an insult is erroneous and mean. If the public schools where you live are failing, then donate your time and/or money to advocate for a change – don’t cast broad aspersions on an institution that, although damaged and failing in some areas, nevertheless educates 90% of the American public for primary and secondary school, and accounts for nearly 30% of four year American Universities.
I believe the poster’s name is Dorothy PALMER. PALMER.
it’s also twitter, so you only get 140 characters. people typically use each character for all they are worth (at the cost of grammar, proper spelling, and punctuation).
I like the mildly racist “public school” = “homegirl” allusion there. Great work, Dot!
Just like last weekend when FOOTLOOSE underperformed and THE THING bombed, 3 MKTEERS is headed to be even a bigger bomb, as it looks quite costly.
When will Hollywood learn to stop making these remakes that obviously no one wants to see, and stop hiring awful directors like Paul W.S. Anderson – who the fudge has 2 middle initials?
I see bomb on the level of CUTTHROAT ISLAND!
Two middle names is not that uncommon.
Wizard of Oz (1939) was a remake
Place in the Sun (1951) was a remake
Maltese Falcon (1941) was a remake
The Sqawman (1918) was a remake, ad then remade again in (1931)
John Carpenters the Thing (1982) was a remake
A Star is Born (1942) was a remake and then remade again (1976)
The Ten Commandments (1953) was a remake
Ben Hur (1925) was a remake and then remade again (1959)
Just a few of the many movies that have been remade going back to the silent film era.
It says nothing about the lack of creativity in the industry that the studios continue to make remakes. going back to the silent film era original movies have been released side by side with remakes.
Remakes have been around since almost the beginings of the movie industry
Lots of people have 2 or even more middle names, I have 3 middle names. what does the fact that he has 2 middle names have to do with anything.
he uses w.s. because there is allready a director in the guild with the name Paul Anderson.
Footloose only “underperformed” by one and a half million dollars. And the good hold this weekend is making up for that. Hardly a crisis, since Footloose will be profitable, and whoever greenlit it will be getting a career boost.
Mila, here’s the thing: your husband, the director of the movie, has done nothing but awful movies. The rest of the cast are option #22 when everyone else passes in town and the story, based on a classic Alex Dumas novel, has grown tired. This is movie #4 based on the Three Musketeers.
If you were Summit – like it was your wallet – would you pile money into this or would you save every marketing dollar for Twilight…aka the franchise that made Summit.
Summit’s only marketing for Twilight franchise is the showmance of its two gay leads, Pattinson and Stewart. Blurrying the lines between them and their characters, using the tabloids and internet blogs filled with so called insiders, who feed the crazy fans with all the “details” of the fake relationship, that’s their marketing. Cheap and somewhat effectful.
What does effectful mean?
A comment no doubt written by her husband. You can just tell.
Markham, here’s the thing…it’s spelled Milla with two l’s. At least get that part right – it’s in the title of the post. Thx.
Also, you do realize the big hit this weekend was the THIRD installment of the most straightforward found footage movie possible. You do realize that, right? So clearly you can refry beans and, if packaged correctly, people will eat them. Please go back and revise your point.
~someone in no way affiliated with the film but likes to call out people who think they are smarter than they are
And I thought it was going to be Resident Evil: Midevil! instead of a “family film”…
It seems like Summit’s got a lot of ads out there. Most of those have been putting Jovovich front and center. So what aspect of the marketing is ticking her off so much?
Milla, if you desire proper marketing on your next film, you may want to consider sleeping with the head of distribution of your next movie instead of the director… for a change
Milla’s almost as dumb as the blonde who slept with the screenwriter.
Who would want to market that piece of junk movie? I bet Summit is trying to find someone to blame for it being so awful
That you would even listen to a critics opinion leaves yours seriously lacking credibility,,,
Bye-bye Milla; you may have walked the runway, but you’re a terrible actress. And I doubt you’ll work on any Summit film again. And I would hazard a few more distributors will think twice about putting you on their list. It doesn’t matter whether the film is a stinker or not; you don’t **** on your own movie.
She hasnt worked on a summit film in the past either, summit didnt make the movie it only aquired the distribution rights, and as long as shes married to a director she wont have to worry about getting work.
She does like taking to Twitter for her causes, but I wonder if she’s seen the reviews, or the movie itself yet?
I read the aggregate of reviews and dodged that bullet. I’ll wait until it comes to Syfy.
maybe she doesn’t really watch tv in the new york area, but pretty much every single commercial break has an ad for the movie. granted i skip them on all my dvr, but they are still aired. maybe the reason this movie won’t do well is because it’s the 80th remake of the three musketeers. there is no real reason to make this movie again, although that’s 2011 hollywood for you.
I’m very aware of this film. I am also aware I do not want to see this film. Ever.
my thought exactly. I must side with Summit on this one, although some studios did do horrible job promoting films, Summit did a pretty big campaign on this one. I’ve been seeing the trailers for WEEKS, and my gosh does it look like a stinker. Dear Jovovich, we don’t want to see your brain-melting bomb of a movie.
