EXCLUSIVE: NBC is developing a Latino family drama with dance elements executive produced by top choreographer/director Kenny Ortega and The Event executive producer Steve Stark. Ortega is also set to direct the untitled project, about a multi-generational Hispanic family running a Latin dance studio in Miami. Ligiah Villalobos (Under The Same Moon/La Misma Luna) has been hired to write the script, with Todd Robinson serving as a non-writing producer. Ortega,
Stark and Robinson developed the world and the characters on the show, drawing on personal stories centered around their families and their connection to dance. Universal Television is producing with studio-based Steve Stark Prods. This is the second high-profile project this season about a Latino family in Miami, joining Fox’s dramedy written and executive produced by Ugly Betty creator Silvio Horta and executive produced by Jennifer Lopez. Paradigm-repped Ortega, director of the hit High School Musical franchise and the Michael Jackson documentary This Is It, was recently tapped to direct Lionsgate’s Dirty Dancing remake. (He choreographed the 1987 original.) CAA-repped Stark executive produces USA’s Fairly Legal. Villalobos is with ICM and Levity.

It’s nice to see Bob Greenblatt taking creative risks with shows like this.
Wasnt there a “Latin Sopranos” on NBC that lasted about half an episode before it was shelved?
Newsflash, NBC – If latino viewers want to see latino shows, they put it on Univision or Telemundo.
But this show will be in English. Which is what the majority of Latinos in the USA speak. As do the majority of the non-Latino audience who appreciate a good show regardless of the race/ethnicity of the cast.
Modern Family has major Latino characters. Do you feel people don’t enjoy the storylines with the Latino characters and those stories should only be told on Spanish-speaking channels?
The American version of Ugly Betty was a hit show. But I suppose that too should have been only been on Univision and Telemundo.
George Lopez was on long enough to go to syndication, and is now a big hit on Nickelodeon. Also should have been never on an English-speaking channel according to you.
Wizards of Waverly place, starring a Latina actress, is a huge hit show for Disney. Also shouldn’t have been on English-speaking TV apparently.
Just because one show with a Latino cast bombed doesn’t mean they all do.
My dear friendly human being. This planet is vast, varied and quite beautiful. It’s a shame if you limit your self from learning about every one that lives on it. Since the English language is so popular you would be amazed at all the wonderful experiences and lessons people from every walk of life have to share with you. Open up your mind and heart and the world becomes readily available to you.
All the best,
Yancey Arias
Steve Stark = awesome guy
Awesome guy = Kenny Ortega!!
Didn’t the Humanitas New Voice program sell a script similar to this called Mambo Palace???
