NBC is solidifying its support for well-received but struggling new drama Prime Suspect with a six-script order. It follows similar script pickup for sophomore dramedy Harry’s Law yesterday. Prime Suspect is NBC’s only new fall scripted series whose fate has not been determined. The network recently gave comedies Up All Night and Whitney full-season orders and canceled drama The Playboy Club and comedy Free Agents. Such a script order allows producers to keep a series in continuous production if the network gives it an episodic back order. After a slow start, Prime Suspect held steady last Thursday (1.5/4), when virtually all other shows were down. The cop drama starring Maria Bello is getting additional sampling on Monday where its repeats replaced Playboy this week.

That’s great news…now lose the freakin’ fidora! It’s hideous and makes the campaign look stupid.
Yes!
For the love of God… YESS!!!
The fedora is what makes the show edgy.
scripts are handed out like pez. big deal.
Here’s a couple of ideas for the producers: Lose the hat and lose the gum. If I wanted to watch a detective in a hat, I’d watch Kojack. The nicorette gum is just distracting. It’s one thing to make the woman more manish, but to make her so utterly unattractive that I don’t want to spend sixty minutes in the same room with her is a turn-off. They aren’t losing the flyover states because she’s a woman in a man’s world, they’re losing the audience because she’s boorish where Jane Tennison (in the original) couldn’t even see a sexual difference. She was just a good cop, trying to do a good job in a world of goons. This show has a goonish woman trying to be one of the boys.
God I hate that hat.
Or maybe she just isn’t the type of woman you want her to be.
mannish—->MANNIX!
YEAH!! So happy. Great show, great writing, great cast. Maria is fantastic! Love her facial expressions, AND the hat!
The hat is a Universal trend. It was a key point in 2011′s THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (a Unviersal production), and it is part of PRIME SUSPECT.
Theories? Ben Silverman is making fedoras on the side and selling them exclusively to NBCU as part of a resignation (severance) agreement.
By the way, this practice of incrementally picking up a few episodes at a time seems cheap and does not give much in the way of network support. Gone are the days for black-or-white decisions (cancellation or full-season pick-up). Except, of course, on some cable networks that order subsequent seasons even before the first show of the first season airs.
Now THAT’S commitment.
True, the hat and gum, in particular are distractions, and she does need to lighten up off-duty. But damn, Maria Bello’s acting is superb and the writing pretty terrific. I also happen to think butch is the new sexy.
Because it’s hard to act angry and bitchy for 44 minutes? Alrighty then.
The hat makes it the best new show on television. Cut the hat, cut the show. Keep the hat – 20 seasons guaranteed.
But the hat is now demanding 250k per episode…
Yes, butch is the new sexy. A hat is the new cleavage. Gum is the new red lipstick. This is my favorite new show on TV. Have officially bailed on all the others.
Terra Nova and New Girl were the last to go….
The hat is fine, people. Get your minds straight. Maria Bello has elevated an otherwise bland procedural to new heights, and she’s done it in a sweet fedora.
Glad to hear this. The networks give up too soon sometimes. I’ve liked it so far.
does anyone know the name of song that played in the first US prime suspect trailer. The link below song starts at 3:07 mark:

Just finally found time to VOD the first three episodes. The stupid caption ads of Bello’s sassy one-liners during the Thursday comedies had me certain The Hat Show was on its way out…but once I watched it, I was surprised how much I liked it…she’s a complex character even without the props.
Always a huge fan of Maria. Big fan of the show. I think the hat gives her character an identity. The problem is not knowing enough of her back story. Why is she so tortured? They (writers) could learn from “unforgettable”.
the hat must go, and as likely will this show. disappointing b/c maria bello makes me wanna dance. if she must be adorned with a hat, make it a sherlock holmes, stovepipe or a mets cap. mets cap. definitely mets cap.
Excuse me. I like the hat.
The show has potential but needs to be re-tweaked some to engage more viewers into watching it. NBC is allowing it to be smpaled on two different nights but heard the Monday airings are not doing too well; but Thursdays have been improving a little bit.
Nothing against Prime Suspect or Harry’s Law but Parenthood does much better in 18-49 and they got fewer episodes? Does that make sense to anyone? Ratings-wise the show is actually doing better than last season when they did a full 22.
That is not a Fedora. Indianna Jones wears a Fedora. That is, I believe, a Trilby.
I’ve been on shows with script orders. The office adopted the first vulture that showed up, named him “Lucky.” He wasn’t. And neither were his friends.
Lose the hat & the show. Watching Claire Danes in Homeland made me realize how great she could have been in Prime Suspect. Probably the closest actress to Helen Mirren who could have done the job and that’s some big shoes to fill.
Maria Bello is perfect for the part.
Crappy show that should have been given the boot already. Nobody’s buying what they’re selling.
I’m buying what they’re selling and I like it! I’d like another, please. Oh, wait, I’d like another six, please.
Maria Bello storming around in a Fedora beating up men.
Who do the writers think she appeals to? Dykes? This broad is so butch she makes Ellen and Rosie look like fems.
I want her hat to get its own show, Maybe on Versus like Dan Patrick.
I sooooo wanted to hate this show because I am such a huge fan of the original.
To my suprise, I am now a big fan of this one.
Jury is still out on the hat
Jenny.
Who cares about the hat, Great show. There is such mindless nonsense on tv (reality shows) this is so well done, great cast and should be supported. Love Maria Bello…Go Philly Girl!
