EXCLUSIVE: New Regency today acquired rights to turn the Jim Henson series Fraggle Rock into a feature film. The property was shopped and caught the interest of studios, before New Regency made the deal for a film that will be produced by The Jim Henson Company and the Montecito Picture Company. The series premiered on HBO in 1983, ran for five seasons and was broadcast in over 80 countries. It revolved around puppet characters Gobo, Wembley, Mokey, Boober and Red, who lived in Fraggle Rock. They interacted with humans who thought they were aliens.
New Regency was recently reconstituted by Arnon Milchan, who brought in Brad Weston to put together a slate of filmmaker-driven films that are mostly geared for adults. However, the Alvin And The Chipmunks franchise has been lucrative for New Regency, and this was an opportunity to add another family film franchise. It is not immediately clear whether the film will use puppets or be a CG/live-action mix. New Regency and the producers are figuring that out now and will set a writer shortly.

awesome… last i heard weinstein was messing around with it (dont have anything against them) but this seems like a good fit.
though i can’t imagine them making a cgi muppet fraggle movies… the whole point is that they are puppets
Best to see how well The Muppets does.
They’ve got a million dollar crud script that they have to pay the Weinsteins. And if Lisa Henson reads that they are comparing it to Alvin and the Chipmunks, she is going to wish that she went with Sony instead.
But it is just another development deal again. Remember when Dweezil Zappa was doing Fraggle Rock? Google it.
The last time Henson produced a movie was half a decade ago. This was a CAA shotgun marriage. No script, no director, no vision.
Lisa thinks Fraggle Rock is more like The Smurfs?
They should have Tim Burton direct or advise. Tim Burton and Jim Henson posthumous collabo.
It would be like Speilberg and posthumous Kubrick on AI.
yeah sure, and johnny depp as wembley?! OMG!
The smurfs have been awful already but that would be even worse…
Or what about Monster House director Gil Kenan.
LOL – awesome. Always wondered who retained the rights to these guys, I didn’t recall their inclusion in the Disney deal.
Yep. Disney only bought “The Muppets” of Kermit and the gang, and Bear in The Big Blue House .All new JHC puppets are NOT Muppets. Disney owns that word and the agreement allows Fraggle Rock’s to still be called Muppets.
Are we still going to see the “Power of the Dark Crystal” Please
Only Brian Henson has any business directing this.
Only because he provided “Muppet special effects” for the original show?
