Has Oprah’s Star Power Dimmed? Relaunch Of OWN Will Put That To The Test
Struggling cable network OWN saw the kind of triple-digit ratings increases over predecessor Discovery Health that it had been seeking with last night’s launches of The Rosie Show and Oprah’s Lifeclass. OWN had been stuck at the ratings levels of Discovery Health season to date and dipping below them in the most-recent third quarter. The network put all of its eggs in the Rosie/Lifeclass basket, effectively doing a relaunch of the network with the show’s premieres, which were simulcast across five Discovery cable networks. On OWN, The Rosie Show, hosted by Rosie O’Donnell, averaged a respectable 497,000 viewers, up 238% from Discovery Health’s October 2010 average in the 7 PM slot. In women 25-54, Rosie Show posted a .44 rating, up 267%. The clip-driven Oprah’s Lifeclass dropped significantly from its Rosie lead-in to 333,000 viewers, despite airing in the more-trafficked 8 PM hour. That was still up from last October’s average by 103%. In women 25-54, the show drew a .40, up 208%. Across all five Discovery Communications networks — including TLC, Investigation Discovery, Discovery Fit & Health and Planet Green as well as OWN – Rosie averaged 1.5 million viewers, Lifeclass 1.2 million. UPDATE: SiriusXM just announced that it will carry O’Donnell’s new OWN talk show on Oprah Radio and SiriusXM Stars channels the day after the show airs on OWN.

Now I love Oprah. I remember watching her before she went National.
However, I can’t figure out if she has only, recently (the past few years) broadcast crap or if she always has.
Whoever is choosing the product is clueless, even for their desired demographic.
Uhm, this is an OK start? 1.5m after airing on how many networks? A lot of the shows on TLC alone achieve higher ratings, without someone with the “star power” of Rosie leading the way. Oprah, get a clue. Your “I had my own talk show for 25 years so I know how you should live every single aspect of your life” shtick is obviously old news.
Hey BRETT, brilliant, on-the-nose comment. I wholeheartedly concur.
Unfortunatelky, tried to give it a fair chance. Left after a few minutes. Sadly,O’Donnell carries too much past baggage..still see a mean, angry woman with a chip on her shoulder.Won’t mnake it no matter all the hype. Give us Ellen every time. She’s old news.
I like Ellen the comedian, but Ellen the talk-show host is too much of a kiss @$$ to celebrities to be enjoyable. Rosie, with all her faults, at least comes across as more real.
I can’t imagine watching Oprah watching her old shows and giving us her thoughts on them..snore.
I watched Rosie last night because I love Russell Brand, but it’s not something I’ll watch regularly.
Rosie’s show was painfully unfunny. Her writers let her down in a big way. The producing was awful. I imagine she’s about to clean house – but it won’t help. She doesn’t hold a candle to Ellen. Too bad.
I thought it was funny that on some of the discovery facebook sites people were upset that her show was forced on them. She is someone you either love or dislke. She seems to think having a hard childhood lets her be mean and petty in later life. I think OWN is a mess and Rosie is not going to help it. I don’t want to watch a talk show where the host has anger problems besides she isn’t that funny. But if Oprah likes her I guess she will stay there for a while I just hope its not on all the discovery channels. I would tell her to have on all the guests she has treated like dirt and start acting like a decent human being and apologize to them for her boorish behavior. If things don’t work out maybe NBC will give her a comedy show like they gave Rosanne Barr. At least compared to Rosanne she has not joked about chopping peoples heads off. NBC you know comedy. or comcast/NBC.
Rosie can pretend all she wants, but she’s already shown her true colors. I don’t mind watching folks I disagree with politically or socially, if I think they are good people that just happen to feel differently about things than I do, but she is just a cold, hate filled individual that needs years of therapy to get over whatever wrongs were done in her past. The very last thing she needs is a multimillion dollar public forum, feeding her narcissism and self destructive tendencies.
Don’t be fooled by first night rating. The mad rush to the bottom
continues…
Now was there really a need to broadcast The Rosie Show on every discovery channel??..im not hatin on the show..i did watch out of curiousity.. it was ok..nothing special..i doubt ill watch it again..
Only in liberal-land can someone like Rosie get another talk show, despite her hateful rants and her ‘truther’ crap. And Oprah embracing her makes them both disgusting.
Now it’s time to forgive Michael Richards.
See, its funny you should mention watching out of “curiosity,” while questioning why it was broadcast on multiple networks. I felt the same way when they launched their show CURIOSITY with a big “Does God Exist?” (slanted toward disproving God’s existence, for what its worth) and then took over a Sunday night by simulcasting ot
…simulcasting CURIOSITY on all Discovery channels. I remember being really annoyed at not having any other options. Seems its Discovery’s MO, not Oprah’s, for launching big new shows. It makes sense on one level, but is quite off-putting on another. Especially if the program isnt your cup of tea, like CURIOSITY was not for me, or these shows from OWN might not have been for others.
Oprah and Rosie are boring and old.
will never watch the Rosie show again. it was AWFUL!
The show was a complete nightmare. Off of series record after first show. Just horrible.
and, i bet Oprah is PISSED she let Rosie take apart her offices for this!
If you really want to to see Rosie’s true colors in action YouTube her old Tom Selleck interview from her former show.
OWN is now the BIG LOT of networks. I didn’t want to insult the 99 cent store.
I enjoy the Rosie show. I think it is refreshing and new talk show format. People hating on her truth is just people hating on something they are repelling inside of them. I think this show will only get better!!
I was just watching your show, and want to say thank you for having a guest that brought up the subject of injurying/hurting yourself as a disease. Just like anorexia or overeating, alchoholism or other types of abuse, this is also a disease and really doesn’t get acknowleged or recognized as much as it should! So thank you!
I have loved watching the Oprah Show over these many years and miss it very much. I also enjoyed Rosie’s “old” show and watched in pretty faithfully. The “new ” Rosie Show on OWN shows promise but I think they need some time to find their groove. My advice for Rosie is to be her funny, interesting and down to earth self and leave the political and social commentary to the pundits and journalists of which there are a slew!! We don’t tune in to be lectured by some author who got arrested with the Occupy Wall Street crowd or a Marine Sgt. who has some axe to grind with the NYPD. I could not believe the amount of time given to these people on several shows last week and I think, if you want to turn people off of the show, keep on booking these type of guests. As viewers, we are inundated with 24/7 news. WE NEED A BREAK!! Yes, Oprah discussed controversial topics on her show but it was done in a way that she seemed to be drawing out information and not taking sides. You get a different feeling from Rosie. In my humble opinion, Rosie is at her best when she is bantering with guests and with the audience. Her little skits are hysterical. Stay on that road Rosie and your show will skyrocket in the ratings. Oprah has put her faith in you for a reason and I, for one, would love to see you succeed.
Rosie, you need to be a little more commer. Stop ragging out. Talk in a normal tone. Rage out only when doing your comedy scetch. No news reel please. Just everyday happenings with your guest. Make it fun. Would like to watch it more. But it needs to be a little more fun and enjoyable to watch.
Rosie has always beem real and when she had her show she really shined. It showedvin her face, her outlook,on life, and what a dedicated, wife and mother. Yes, she got personal but thats what i think set her appart from others. People still can’t handle different real talk, rea vunerably especially from ‘celebrity’ i respect her very much GOOD LUCK MS. O’DONNELL!
