With a slew of daytime syndicated talk show projects jockeying for a fall 2012 berth, a big one is entering the fray for fall 2013. Queen Latifah is set to host a new daytime talk show that Flavor Unit, her company with Shakim Compere, will co-produce with Will Smith and James Lassiter’s Overbrook Entertainment and Sony Pictures Television. Compere and Overbrook’s Miguel Melendez, who were instrumental in getting the project together, will serve as executive producers with Queen Latifah and Overbrook’s Lassiter, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
Queen Latifah and Smith have a lot in common — both started in hip-hop before segueing into acting and then
producing and both have earned Oscar nominations. In fact, Latifah’s first role was an arc on NBC’s The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, which starred Smith, also in his first acting gig. “We’ve had a long and successful history both personally and professionally with Overbrook’s Miguel, JL, Jada and Will,” Compere said. “We share a common vision and have been wanting to collaborate for quite some time.” In addition to Queen Latifah’s work with Smith on Fresh Prince, she starred opposite his wife, Pinkett Smith, in the 1996 movie Set It Off. “We are excited to join forces with Latifah and as well as Sony Pictures TV on this new venture,” Melendez said. “This forum is the perfect place to showcase Latifah’s tremendous range of talents and unique ability to connect and inspire people.” Sony TV’s relationship with Pinkett Smith and Overbrook stems from their recent collaboration on the TNT series Hawthorne, which starred Pinkett Smith and was produced by Sony and Overbrook. Additionally, Overbrook has had a long relationship with Sony on the film side, most recently producing together the hit Karate Kid remake.
Sony could’ve fast-tracked the talk show for a fall 2012 launch but opted to give it time to develop the way the studio did with The Dr. Oz Show, which has been the No. 1 syndicated daytime talk show in women 25-54 for the past three weeks. Sony TV does not have a contender for fall 2012 as the studio has been very selective with daytime projects, taking its time to find one that it feels it can throw its full support behind. Besides, the 2012 field is overcrowded already with talk shows hosted by Katie Couric and Steve Harvey already cleared for launch, Maury spin-off Trisha Goddard close to a go after getting picked up by Sinclair a week ago, and several other shows — including Twentieth’s Ricki Lake, Warner Bros’ Bethenny Frankel and CBS TV Distribution’s Jeff Probst — looking for station clearances.
Queen Latifah first hosted a syndicated daytime talk show a decade ago: The Telepictures-produced Queen Latifah Show launched in 1999 and ran for two seasons. Flavor Unit made a strong entry into scripted series this year with the launch of two shows, Let’s Stay Together on BET and Single Ladies on VH1, both of which have been renewed for a second season. Coming up on the feature side is Warner Bros’ Joyful Noise starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton. Overbrook has produced feature films that have generated more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office. The company’s next feature is the Fox title This Means War.

Finally, some flavor in daytime!!
Love Queen Latifah! Hope this comes off….
Love love love love love her!!!
Wow…this has disaster written all over it. She lacks the journalist/interviewing background of Anderson Cooper, the natural comedy of Ellen, the schtick of Wendy Williams and even the trash that is The Maury Povich Show.
This is like when they gave talk shows to Bonnie Hunt, Vicki Lawrence, Carnie Wilson, Tempest Bledsoe, etc. They were all likable in some capacity but the leap to a talk show didn’t make any sense outside of the fact they needed work. Hunt at least gets credit for being good at it.
Queen Latifah has gone from an Academy Award nomination, starring in hit films to an attempt at a talk show? I like her but this is just not the right fit for her. Her best bet is to go for a sitcom.
She could pull it off because she has a very engaging personality and a great on screen presence.
However the biggest challenge will be for her to surround herself with good producers– who will put together a show that is geared to her strengths. If they just try to copy other shows, it could be a huge failure. I wish her luck.
I’m a huge fan of Queen Latifah, Will and Jada. I know this new show will do well.
Ellen, Anderson, Latifah. I see a pattern.
LOL x Infinity!!!!!!!
Daytime will need a bigger closet.
I see it too.
There is no mention of a name for the new talk show. If it were to be named “Latifah”, it would not really fit the pattern of programs promoted by the first names of the hosts (“Ellen” for “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “Anderson” for “Anderson Cooper”), since the name Queen Latifah is a pseudonym for Dana Owens.
Mario, Jason’s talking about a different pattern.
I didn’t know Bethenny officially had a talk show. I thought I read her pilot didn’t go well. Personally I find her so off putting and abrasive.
Also Guess they didn’t talk about what kind of show Latifah will have this go round and why it will be successful when the last one failed.
It does seem that theres a glut of daytime talk – and with soaps on the outs – its time for some creatives to come up with a new daytime concept. They’re all getting to feel the same – they have the same topics, guests, we need some originality…
I wish the Queen the best, but the last time she hosted a talk show she was not good , and her talk show received horrible ratings.
Surprised to see all these effusive comments. She’s tried the talk show thing at least once before, maybe more!
Daytime tv shows that are failing or showing cracks so everybody is rushing into talk shows thinking people will tune in cause of a big name will one up another. Now you will have a pick court shows or stupid talk shows. Jerry,Wendy,Steve Wilkos,Jeremey Kyle,Anderson Cooper, and the rest of the bullshit shows. If I’m not mistaken she had a show in the 90′s that got low ratings which got cancelled. So what is she gonna bring to the table that the other lame ass baby daddy,i got cheated on or other bullshit topics the other ones cover.
hey mario — the one name-thing is NOT the pattern jason is referring to….
GOSH this is her second talk show. She already had one that lasted about 4 years or so. GIVE OTHER PEOPLE A CHANCE. I can’t stand that the indstry uses the same 10 people over and over again ***looking at you Rosie O’Donnell*** What we need is someone like Graham Norton or anyone else not seen before. Doesn’t have to be an unknown per se, but not been around since the stone age.
QL should be a judge on AI, XF or AGT.
I love queen latifah and rooting for her new show cant wait ti it premiers. Lov ya qn and congratulations
They are all allegedly closet cases
