Fox got some really bad news last night when the Yankees get eliminated from the playoffs, leaving the network’s post-season baseball coverage without its 2 biggest draws – the Yankees and the Red Sox, which bowed out a week ago. Softening the blow was the fact that the network won its third Thursday in a row among adults 18-49 with The X Factor (3.8/10), which still refuses to grow but has been extremely persistent in its ratings performance. The reality series matched its fast national rating from last week, just as it did on Wednesday. (X Factor always gets adjusted up in the ratings.) Keeping steady was actually a major accomplishment last night as the big Yankees-Tigers game on TBS pushed most broadcast series down.
There were only 2 other series not to drop week-to-week last night and one of them was a show that needed good news — NBC’s Prime Suspect (1.5/4), which matched its performance last week even as its lead-in, Whitney (2.3/6) was down 8%. Prime Suspect is the only new NBC series whose fate is undecided but the network’s brass are rallying behind it, and its hold last night is encouraging thought it needs to eventually grow to earn a pickup. That could happen next week when the network will start airing reruns of the show in the Monday 10 PM slot vacated by cancelled Playboy Club to give the crime drama starring Maria Bello additional sampling.
Prime Suspect was not the lowest-rated NBC series on Thursday this time – it was tied with Community (1.5/5), which was down 17%. Parks & Recreation (1.9/5) was down 10%, while The Office (3.1/8) was down 11% to log its lowest-rated episode in 6-and-a-half years, since the finale of its poorly rated 6-episode first season in the spring of 2005. While baseball was a factor, it is still disconcerting for the veteran comedy to drop so much as it raises concerns about the show’s viability without star Steve Carell.
Not much to say about Charlie’s Angels (1.2/4) whose march to cancellation continued with another big ratings drop (20%), which followed last week’s 29%. Charlie’s Angels was tied the CW’s The Vampire Diaries in the 8-9 PM hour among adults 18-49 and finished second to last among all programs last night, only ahead of CW’s The Secret Circle (0.8/2). The reboot also is hurting veteran Grey’s Anatomy (3.0/8), which was down 17% to a series low. Private Practice (2.2/8) also was down a lot, 21%.
CBS’ The Big Bang Theory (4.4/13, 13.6 million) was down 8% from its fast national demo rating last week to once again rank as the top program of the night in both 18-49 and total viewers. Rookie How To Be A Gentleman (2.5/7) is not looking good, squandering a major portion of its lead-in. I wonder how long before CBS subs it with veteran Rules Of Engagement? Both Gentleman and its lead-out, Person Of Interest (2.5/7) were down 7% from last week. The Mentalist (2.7/9, 12.9 million) bucked the down trend and was the only series to post a gain last night, up 4% from last week in the demo and the clear winner in the 10 PM hour. CBS (2.9/8, 11.7 million) won the night in total viewers and was second in 18-49.

Charlie’s Angels and How to Be a Gentleman will both be gone before the end of the month. I think CBS will probably move Rules of Engagement back to Thursday.
That would be brilliant. Rules of Engagement would be a perfect show if they’d switch David Spade. He’s just not funny or believable as a ‘Barney Stinson’ type at all. But the show is too good to let him drive me away…
…the hell…
the show isn’t any good, spade or not
HOW TO BE A GENTLEMAN should be put out of it’s misery. THE OFFICE is as good as it has been the past 3 years, which isn’t saying much. They’re not capitalizing on James Spader at all, and trying to survive on Ed Helms’ character who, as talented as the actor portraying him is, ain’t no “Michael Scott”. Still, it’s watchable, and entertaining, but it’s not the smart, clever, sophisticated show it once was. It now plays to the masses and is incredibly mainstream, which is fine, but that’s not what THE OFFICE originally was.
well said all the way around! the office needs more spader.
the cast is so damn good, but there is a definite rhythm problem to each episode without the michael scott character. yet the show remains better than just about everything else on the comedy board. yes, there are funnier shows in their creative peaks right now, but the office is still good from top to bottom.
The show has sunk to its lowest ratings in 6 1/2 years because, “It now plays to the masses and is incredibly mainsteam…”? Who wrote this, Yogi Berra?
Keep the Office open. It reminds me of when Colonel Blake left on M*A*S*H. The stories and tone of the show became different. All of the characters in the Office have potential storylines (as well as potential other jobs) It may not be as fresh as the beginning, but it has hit a point where you actually are interested in where the characters are going.
Besides, why cancel a winning show before its end where the prospects of replacement are so few. This is not the time to retire the old guard of shows yet. Comedies are just started making its comeback.
P.S. I think its time to end the Simpsons run.
Why do TV Execs think rebooting cheesy 70′s & 80′s shows like Charlie’s Angels, Bionic Woman & Knight Rider will be a success? They’re NOT & never will be!
Reboots are tolerable and do relatively well in numbers when done right. Example: Hawaii Five 0. NBC just doesn’t have a firm grasp.
Prime Suspect is terrific and gets better. That’s technically not a reboot more of a Americanization of an English show. Mario Bello is fantastic.
So… Why was WHITNEY picked up for a full season? It’s a terrible show that ALSO drops viewers every week. Is it that NBC has sunk so much into marketing that they’re hoping to justify it?
They need SOMETHING to put there. They can’t just rebroadcast Seinfeld reruns … actually, they could.
and should.
Their ratings would be 10000000 times better than they are now.
This is why you never launch a reboot against popular programming on CBS and NBC.
Person of Interest is a mess. Tried to watch last night for a bit – no wonder people are bailing. Down again week to week and in 4th place 18-49. Not good for CBS which used to win Thursday nights. They need some excitement there – or they will go the way of NBC. Aging franchises are the only ones still delivering acceptable numbers – which isn’t good for the future there. Only thing they have going is that ABC and NBC are doing a whole lot worse.
Whitney is awful too.
Gotta disagree on Person of Interest. The only show i can watch. Great ending moment last night.
Do agree w/who said why bring back these 70s shows. Sometimes they were just part of a larger zeit thats long gone.
Prime Suspect is just too dull. Dont know why. Maybe looks too much like other shows – one thing – like the way NYC is shot in Person of Interest a lot more than in Prime Suspect.
totally disagree. Person of Interest has been pretty good. Decent action, decent gritty tone with some schmaltz at the end to keep people watching. Was also good to see a guest appearance this week from Ruben Santiago Hudson, formerly the captain on Castle.
Person of Interest is hot. A high-concept, post-9/11 version of The Equalizer (think about it). The pilot was box-office quality. Extend some scenes and it could have run in theaters. Cavieziel is a surprise; a sleeker version of Jack Bauer; total TV ex-CIA badass. Who’da thunk it. Subsequent eps I’ve seen have kept up the quality.
Now let’s take a moment to contemplate Taraji P. Henson’s sexy little booty, seen in episode 2 in stretch pants and boots.
(Moment of silence)
You fucking people moan that all network TV shows are about cops and lawyers, then when something semi-original comes on you bitch about it.
As the CSIs slide, Person of Interest is the kind of show that will eventually replace them. Go Nina and Les.
Haters can suck a drain pipe.
PS: The Office has ALWAYS been overrated. They should have ended it when Steve left.
That is all.
I stopped watching “The Office” halfway through and deleted it from my DVR.
Sad to see a show once so clever now so completely out of spark and steam.
Personally, I think the office has hit new highs with comedic value. What’s killing it is the crowd of people who think “it’s cool” to hate The Office without Michael Scott.
It’s still one of the funnier shows on television today.
The office sucked last night. Not funny, worse episode ever. Just terrible.
Wow! Have I ever been read for the obvious bandwagon-sycophant I clearly am!
Yes, it had nothing to do with the tedious, uninspired, bland writing or aimless jokes or clunky plot devices that led me to be bored! Instead, it was because I was so determined to be perceived as “cool” for missing an OK actor who was sorta good when he was given decent material. You got me!
Actually how to be a gentleman would be great if it was on mondays. Wish they had ordered more episodes of Mad love instead, which is a great show. Oh well.
I hope Grey’s trend continues until it disappears.
I’m assuming the Whitney pickup was a preemptive move on NBC’s part not to have her jump to CBS now that 2 Broke Girls has a full season order as well.
The people at 2 Girls don’t want here anywhere near the set.
Bob Grreenblatt thinks that by ordering more episodes of “Whitney” he is showing Brandon Tartikoff leadership re Family Ties and Cheers
The fault in that analysis is that Whitney has an actress who sadly would not survive an entertainment shift as a Barista at Starbucks
Fox needs to get rid of raising hope.
Get rid of their best show ??? sure ted they’re gonna do it just for you
Something happened to Grey’s Anatomy on the way to this season. It’s completely off the rails. The writing and character gimmicks are absurd. You can see it all over the actor’s faces…’How can I justify what my character is saying and doing?’ — It’s become a parody of itself and it’s a shame because this cadre of actors deserves better than this very mediocre dreck. All those writer/producers in the credits have forgotten one important basic… You have to care about the characters!
They should resurrecr Bleep My Dad Says and cancel How to be a Gentlemen. Last season Bleep was performing MUCH better in the post Big Bang Theory slot that How to Be A Gentlemen is performing now. THe cancellation of Bleep was such a surprise. It wasn’t a half bad show and was doing pretty well, too.
What’s really sucking this year is Parks and Rec. It was my favorite comedy last year – but just terrible. Way to broad and silly.
I really hope they can keep Prime Suspect. It’s a great show.
I gave up on Person’s of Int.
Agreed about Prime Suspect, disagreed about Parks & Rec. Last night’s episode was the best yet this season and equal to some of last season’s most solid eps. You’re awfully quick to write off a show that’s clearly given you a lot of pleasure in the past.
Prime Suspect is the only solidly written and acted new show at NBC except for the brilliant Smash which is mid season.
Prime Suspect premiered against The Mentalist and the return of Greys Anatomy so it’s viable audience got pulled away at the get go.
Poor scheduling on NBC’s part. Love Film 44. Those people are smart producers. Friday Night Lights was brilliant.
Prime Suspect needs time to build its audience.
Yeah, except that Prime Suspect is a snooze. I get that they want to develop her character, but I get it already. Give us something gripping in the crime aspect.
Prime Suspect is a great show and Maria Bello is fantastic. I hope NBC keeps it, they certainly need something good!
I’m not the typical TV viewer and find much of network stuff to be junk. Last night, however, I watched “Person of Interest” and found it to be one of the worst pieces of junk of the pile of junk that is out there. Caviezel?!? Jesus Christ!!! He seems to have taken a page from the David Caruso “how to act and whisper at the same time” school of acting. He was horrible!! And what’s up with the limping guy? Man, that was bad!!! The two “business men” in the bar that over hear the other two talking? WHAT??? It looked like a bad student project. I’ll never get back those 44 minutes.
TVTonight.com.au website in Australia is saying Charlie’s Angels is moving to one of ch. Nine’s digital channels after just two episodes.
This week 639,000 viewers vs 815,000 the previous week couldn’t find their remotes…
Here is my take on ‘Whitney’ (because I know you all couldn’t start your breakfast w/o it)- I watched last night’s episode (@3 in the morning, ’cause that’s how I roll) and realized I’m VERY disappointed in the series. It has a major premise flaw- the story centers on an insecure woman’s obsession with her relationship. The show is becoming like one of those annoying girlfriends that can’t stop talking to her guy about the status of their relationship. I’m completely annoyed and I’m a chick! Aren’t those the girlfriends who get dumped pretty quickly? Well, NBC is the boyfriend…
The premise is too limiting, the characters too poorly formed (and performed – w/the one exception of Chris D’Elia – and oh, please, the friend w/the nasally voice- who thought to put that woman on screen, with dialog??) and the writing too mundane for this to go anywhere. Who were you listening to when you developed this Whitney?? It is the 21st Century and your character has nothing else going on in her life besides her f-ing boyfriend? who doesn’t even have a job? Does anyone on that show have a job? How can everyone afford all those lattes and cocktails they are drinking constantly for 22 minutes every week? I wanted so much to like this Whitney, I’m a fan, but just as with your tv boyfriend, you’re doing everything you can to push me away.
P.S. Give ‘Gentleman’ a chance. Hornsby is awesome. I like the Monday idea.
As I’ve just stumbled across this site and am enjoying the, what seems like, insider insight, maybe I could satisfy one of my lingering curiosities…
What are the criteria for success/failure (read: staying on the air/cancelled) of new shows on the major networks?
and…
Is there any consideration for non-traditional viewing options within those calculations?
The reason I ask is that as a consumer that enjoys losing myself in an alternate reality an hour at a time to recharge my real life batteries, I cannot commit to the limited constraints of network or cable to view the distractions that interest me.
Thanks for you time!
I’ll try to answer what I think may be your question:
“What are the criteria for success/failure (read: staying on the air/cancelled) of new shows on the major networks?”
That’s easy. This is a business and as such the number of viewers dictates the value of the show to advertisers. Less viewers=less dollars. That applies to all of TV. Network or otherwise.
As to your desire to watch reality TV, many folks feel the way you do. That’s not a bad thing, per se. Reality TV seems to satisfy folks appetite in that you get to escape in drama, comedy and tragedy all (most times) in one show. To many viewers it seems that, unlike scripted shows, it is really happening to the people on screen and that appeals to many viewers. The fact of the matter is that, unlike scripted shows, the “pretense” is that it’s really happening to the people on screen. On scripted shows, you know they’re actors working from a script developed by writers, where on reality shows, including X Factor, American Idol and the like, the show is directed (set-up) to encourage many of the situations one is led to believe are spontaneous and real. Producers take non actors, as in the case of all those “Real Housewives” shows and often create scenarios that elicit responses to satisfy the needs of a particular episode. I might mention the “real people” are often willing participants in the ruse. Watch them if you will, but understand that to some extent, you’re being duped.
Dear “Why”…It’s very simple “Whitney” comes from the “Chelsea Lately” family of E Entertainment.(once run by Ted Harbert,Chelsea’s ex-boyfriend…that’s also how her show got on the air).E Entertainment was owned by Comcast…who know owns NBC. Their all in bed with each other. why else would you put on a show this bad with a very irritating and untalented person? So disappointed, as is everyone, in Bob Greenblatt who keeps buying crap and selling out to corporate politics. Next they’ll be a series based on the “Kardasians”. Oh God! I hope I didn’t just give them another bad idea…no…I didn’t. they seem to be able to do this on their own.
The original Charlie’s Angels epitomized T&A television. Today’s version is also T&A – terrible and awful.
I haven’t seen Charlie’s Angels. That said, in the 70s the show was a great way for men to see hot chicks in skimpy clothes. They had a caucaison for all types. Back then, porn was not readily availible, and Playboy was the most prevalent delivery system.
Now? Whoo boy. With porn readily availible, why tune in? If it was great, sure. But with those actresses, it won’t be. I personally like Rachael Taylor. But the other two? Minka Kelly isn’t a star. She is hot, and people seem to want her to succeed, but it isn’t happening.
PS, I like Whitney. It is uneven, sure. But there is potential there.
Just read somewhere that Rules of Engagemnt will be taking over the Gentleman’s spot on Thursday effective immediately while gentlman goes on Satrudays, the burn-off spot.
Person of Interest is a very good show and James Cavizel is doing a great job. I would like to see more of Taraji P Henson.
The Office I just forgot about, so don’t know if it’s still good.
WOW Simon and Paula together again HOW BORING it’s so American Idol been there, done that, so i’ll pass. HEY Simon and Fox X Factor SUCKS ! will never beat American Idol. and to Nicole your music SUCKS !
