How bad is the current economic recession? Viewers are flocking to fairy tales, one of the most popular entertainment genres during the Great Depression. After the surprisingly strong launch on Sunday of ABC’s Once Upon A Time —
which became the top-rated new drama series with a 4.0 Live+Same Day 18-49 rating — the other fairytale-themed new series, NBC’s Grimm, also exceeded expectations, premiering on Friday and against Game 7 of the World Series no less. The drama drew a 2.1/6 fast national rating among adults 18-49 last night (6.5 million total viewers), which is certain to go up in the finals. It was by far the highest-rated NBC drama premiere this season and the highest-rated Friday non-sports telecast on any network since Dec. 31, 2010 (ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve). For NBC, it was the highest 18-49 rating in the Friday 9 PM slot in almost two years. And Grimm accomplished that with no help from its lead-in, the final season premiere of Chuck, which managed only a 1.0/3 in 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers, a series low. Dateline (1.3/4) at 10 PM was up 30% from its two-hour telecast last week. NBC (1.5, 4.9 million) finished second for the night in 18-49 behind Fox’s World Series, which dominated the night. ABC logged a 1.1/3, 4.5 million viewers with new Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and 20/20, tying in the demo CBS (1.1/3, 6.9 million) which switched to all reruns when the World Series went to a seventh game.

Nothing more than 1st time “curiosity” ratings. both shows are simply terrible…will die quickly.
GRIMM is by no means “terrible”, its actually pretty good and handles the more hokey aspects of the concept well. Its incredibly well executed and I hope people stick with it as it could be a nice Fri night standby. ONCE however is pretty bad…REALLY HOKEY ..in fact ridiculous.
That said, I hope BOTH shows survive as we need something besides cops and doctors on TV.
Maybe the people who like Grimm are the type like you that would be home on a Friday night.*cough* Losers.
People like different things. Knowing that comes with maturity. Losers, on the other hand, come all ages.
Grimm STINKS.
dear my opinion, MY opinion: GRIMM ROCKS!!
That’s why opinions are like a-holes, everybody got one.
My opinion is that GRIMM was awesome last night but then again, I saw it with the sneak code from Twitter weeks ago and loved it then and watched it again last night and loved it even more. Move it to Thursdays at 10pm and put Maria Bello down.
Grimm may do well because it’s a procedural, which people like, but with the added fairy tale twist. While it’s clear what type of show Grimm will be every week, the same can’t be said for Once Upon a Time. We’ll see how Grimm does when Fringe returns next week, as they may share some of the same audience.
Considering all the factors going against Grimm (it’s on NBC, on a Friday, against the World Series, and with Chuck as a lead-in), that 2.1 is excellent!
Considering all the factors going against Grimm, the NBC programming department must be led by zombies.
No Braaainnnnss!!!
No Braaainnnnsss!!!
When are they gonna cancel that show Whitney. Such crap should not be on TV, even if it is NBC…
True that, but that crap still manages to draw more audience than critic and Internet favourites like Community and Parks & Recreation.
Hell, even a “crap” show (although I find it funny sometimes) like Rules of Engagement have higher rating than both P&R and Community combined.
that’s great! I LOVED Grimm. Strong writing, amazing look, great cast. congrats!! NBC should be really happy. I haven’t loved a debut this much in a while. 2.1 demo is huge!
I don’t agree at all. I thought Grimm was awesome!! and I didn’t. en see that much advertising for it until this week unlike Whitney so considering not a lot of advertising and world series game 7, they did great.
I moved Grimm. Absolutely appeals to my live if sci fi and fantasy. I don’t know what show “my opinion” was watching!
2.1 is the highest-rated drama premiere?! Ouch.
Highest rated premiere on a FRIDAY.
Yay Grimm!
I was pleasantly surprised by Grimm. I liked the premise, but I heard iffy reviews. I think some of that negative buzz may have been from fans of its genre and timeslot competitors. This was a good show that I think has a lot of promise. The twists at the end grabbed me.
This show, like a lot of sci-fi/fantasy shows, has a hard hurdle to clear. The pilot, or setting up the backstory, is really dificult. Buffy, Battlestar, and Zombie shows basically had an established backstory.
So, even though both fantasy shows were iffy in their premiers, I don’t hold it against them. They have a lot to get into in their pilots, and both would’ve benefited from 2 hour pilots. But they set it up and showed the promise. I am eager to see where both shows are going.
NBC might as well leave Grimm there. When is the last time they got a 2.1 on a Friday at nine. See if it can establish an audience on Friday nights, use other projects to fix the other nights. The true test is next week against CBS originals.
Finally, something scary and exciting back on Fridays. I still miss GHOST WHISPERER, but GRIMM gave me something to smile about. It was tense, but had a heart. I’ll be back next week for sure!
They should move chuck and Grimm to mondays
Bad bad idea. Monday night shows are expected to deliver. Chuck is running on fumes (last spring’s season finale was a perfectly good ending for the series) and Grimm’s subject matter is never going to have widespread appeal. Both are fortunate to be on Friday, where expectations are low. Grimm might be able to survive for several years under the radar like that.
Expected to perform? NBC’s been averaging lower on Monday all season than this demo.
Congratulations Grimm cast and crew…. have a great, and long, run with it.
Go get ‘em.
I keep checking deadline for the “Whitney Gets Canned” headline but based on what you said about community and parks it may stick around longer than it should…
GRIMM has potential. It was also a well-shot, well-written pilot and I totally disagree with first poster’s “curiosity ratings” point of view. NBC needs to move this show off Friday as it did in one night what PRIME SUSPECT and its other series have completely failed to do — get an audience!
NBC was right in ending Chuck after this season because those ratings are terrible. If they decide to pair Grimm with Awake in the spring, they may actually have a solid Friday night line-up for once. This should prove to the networks that if you have an interesting show on Friday nights, there’s actually an audience out there who will watch.
ooh! GRIMM paired with AWAKE is an excellent idea!
‘Grim’ was a delight and a surprise. Well scripted, well acted, an attractive cast and, visually appealing. 100 times better than the dreadful, messy ‘Once Upon a Time.’
I hope NBC doesn’t abandon it.
The NBC executives are such wusses and refuse to give programs a chance to develop and find an audience.
..remember when they USED to do that?
CHEERS…. launched last in ratings.
SEINFELD…. launched last in ratings…
maybe the networks should go old school
-RnsW
That strategy hasn’t worked with Chuck, that’s for sure.
As long as Nielson keeps putting their ‘boxes’ in homes that have teenagers controlling the TV you will always get this crap. ‘Reality’ shows along with vampire genre formats getting better ratings then good dramas.
Really, Mr. Greenblatt? Desperate much?
I figured the 18-34 crowd would be out celebrating Halloween weekend but maybe all of the rain and snow on the East Coast kept people inside…
to be honest, I think NBC should move ‘Grimm’ to Monday nights as suggested earlier. It’s great counter programming against all of the male-targeted stuff on that night like ’2.5 Men’ and ‘Monday Night Football.’ Certainly more so than ‘The Playboy Club’ was. At this point they’re airing re-runs of an underperforming Maria Bello show, so what do they have to lose?
I watched Grimm from beginning to ending and enjoyed it. I hope is survives cause it should be on a different night like Sunday.
I pulling for it cause I like Russell Hornsby.
It’s also worth noting that Grimm grew at the half-hour mark from 2.1 to 2.2.
Last time NBC, without Dateline, did decent numbers like Grimm did was when Las Vegas was on the air, as that did about equal numbers but Grimm is some slither of hope for NBC but seriously, renewing Chuck for this last season? WHY? This show should have been CXLed two years ago. Talk about a show over-staying its welcome.
Wow, I wonder how many people NBC hired to post on this article…
Or maybe people really liked it. Please stop calling who like the show PR Flacks.
@Ove – was wondering the same thing!
The acting on Grimm was pretty awful. Good thing Fringe is back next week.
