With baseball games on Fox and TBS, the other broadcast networks faced rather atypical competition but survived mostly unscathed. Most series were flat or very close to their levels from last week, with four exceptions. On the plus side, ABC’s sophomore Happy Endings (3.3/8 in adults 18-49), which featured Megan Mullally as a guest star, grew 14% from its fast national number last week, while its lead-in, Modern Family, was virtually unchanged. ABC’s gains carried over to the 10 PM hour where Revenge (2.7/7, 7.9 million viewers) was up 8% from its 18-49 fast national last week. (Both series were adjusted in the finals.) In the negative column, NBC’s rookie Up All Night (2.0/6) was down 9% from last week’s fast national, while CBS’ veteran CSI (2.6/7, 10.8 million) was down 10% to a season low and slipped to second place in the 10 PM hour among 18-49 behind ABC’s Revenge. CSI still topped the time period in total viewers.
Also noteworthy last night — both repeats of freshman series slated in the wake of last week’s cancellations did better than the shows they replaced: NBC’s Whitney (1.3 vs. 1.0 for Free Agents last week) and Ringer (0.4 in 18-34 and 18-49, up 33% in 18-34 and flat in 18-49; 1.2 million viewers, up 9%). Here are the numbers for the rest of the rest of the series. (Time-adjusted ratings for Fox’s coverage of ALCS Game 4 from 8-10:32 PM will be available later.) ABC’s The Middle (2.8/9) was up a tenth from its fast national last week, flat with the national. Ditto for Modern Family (5.7/14, 13.4 million), the highest-rated program of the night in 18-49 and total viewers. The series that linked the two, freshman Suburgatory (3.0/8), was even with its fast national last week (down a tenth from the final). ABC (3.4/9, 9.1 million) is currently at No. 1 for the night in 18-49.
CBS’ Survivor: South Pacific (3.2/, 10.5 million) was up a tenth in the demo, while Criminal Minds (3.7/9, 12.7 million) was down by that much. CBS (3.2/8, 11/3 million) is projected to top the night in total viewers. NBC’s Harry’s Law (1.2/3, 7.6 million) and Law & Order: SVU (2.1/5, 7.2 million) matched their demo results from last week. The CW’s America’s Next Top Model (0.8/2 in 18-49, 1.9 million) was steady in 18-49 and up 7% in viewers.

Last week, someone compared Suburgatory to Gilmore Girls and they were right. In fact, Suburgatory is kind of like the Gilmore Girls, Juno , Mean Girls and the early days of Weeds put together. However, on it’s own, it’s a very well written show. It makes great use of dialogue.
Definitely a lot of comparisons to make with Suburgatory; the one that struck me the most from the start of it and has carried through is that it’s reminiscent of Easy A.
No, it isn’t. Enough already. Gilmore Girls was a thoroughly original voice. Suburg is recycled jokes and plot devices but the audience is perhaps young enough that it seems fresh to them. Truly original voices like the makers of GG need to be given their distinction and not blurred together with mediocrity, because they’re becoming fewer and far between.
I completely agree with you. It is a little bit like the Gilmore Girls.
Agreed, and the girl is a wonderful actress.
So when is ABC announcing the full pick-ups for Revenge and Suburgatory and the cancellations of Charlie’s Angels and Pan Am?
Great to see Revenge on the up-tick. Best soapy drama in years!
Penny is my fav on Happy Endings. I’m also liking Revenge and Ringer so far.
Revenge is my guilty pleasure for the year.
Bubblegum for the mind, but tasty and chewy.
I AM GLAD TO READ THAT HAPPY ENDING AND REVENGE GOT BETTER RATING. I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE FUTURE EPISODE AND I HOPE THAT BOTH SHOW WILL GET RENEW REAL SOON. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Happy Endings really deserves a shot, I’m glad more people tuned in even if it appears that it was for Mullally. Hopefully they’ll stick around.
HAPPY ENDINGS is a fairly ambitious, entertaining and well-made show: a bit like if the ‘Friends’ characters were a bit more self-aware, rough around the edges and in on the joke. ABC should throw some money into promoting this show a bit more because the content and ensemble are appealing and unpredictable. Also: Damon Wayans Jr is a lot more funny and organic on this show than he was on the “New Girl” pilot, and Adam Palley is sensationally funny. Big props to ABC for sticking with it…certainly a LOT better than “Cougar Town,” a show filled with awful plastic surgery and even worse jokes.
Whitney is repeating pretty damn and improving the timeslot.
I can’t understand why The Middle doesn’t get better numbers. It’s every bit as well written as Modern Family and doesn’t have to rely on stereotypical gay and Latina characters for its jokes. (Isn’t Sofia Vergara, good as she is, just a recycled Charo from the ’70′s?) The Middle has the three best kid actors on television, playing fully-developed and unique characters, while Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn are a lot funnier (and sweeter too) than Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell. Last night’s episode was brilliant.
I absolutely agree 100%. The Middle is one of the funniest shows on TV and I don’t understand why more people don’t tune in. If you watch it for no reason other than the three kids then you are missing a hilarious show. Those who watch the show will get the remark immediately.
Yay for Happy Endings! I read that it just had 6 additional scripts green-lit! Here’s hoping it makes it for another full season and many many more!
