UPDATED: Launching in the Sunday 8 PM slot once occupied by The Wonderful World Of Disney, ABC’s fairytale drama Once Upon A Time got off to a great start last night, pulling in a 3.9 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 and 12.8 million viewers against NFL football on NBC and the World Series on Fox. This is ABC’s highest-rated new series premiere this fall and the season’s No. 1 drama debut in 18-49 on any network. Once Upon A Time more than doubled last week’s delivery of its predecessor in the time slot, reality veteran Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (1.9/5). It also more than doubled its lead-in last night, America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.5/4), which was flat with last week. The big opening for Once Upon A Time helped veteran Desperate Housewives (3.0/7) post a 11% week-to-week increase for its best demo number this season since the premiere. The halo effect didn’t stretch to 10 PM, where freshman Pan Am (1.8/5) was even with last week. The period drama is yet to get word on a back order as ABC wanted to see how the show performs with Once Upon A Time in the lineup. The result is inconclusive, but more on the disappointing side. Still, I hear ABC brass continues to support the 1960s series and did another promo photo shoot for it this past weekend.
CBS’ ratings may be slightly off because of 17- to 19-minute football overruns in some markets. That, combined with an interview featuring Steve Jobs’ biographer, sent 60 Minutes (2.5/7) up a whopping 47% from last week. The Amazing Race (2.7/7) was even, The Good Wife (2.0/5) was down a tenth, CSI: Miami (2.1/5) down 13%.
With a strong Game 4 of the World Series last night, Fox is on track to win the night for the first time against NBC’s Sunday Night Football, which was stuck with a lopsided game between the Saints and the winless Colts — it ended in a 62-7 blowout, almost as big as Manchester City’s 6-1 dismantling of Manchester United on the other side of the pond last night. (Sorry United fans!) The Saints-Colts game drew a 8.2 overnight rating/13 share, down 27% from last week and Sunday Night Football‘s lowest fast national rating in nearly three years.

It is great to see that Once Upon a Time got off to such a great start! I loved the premiere and look forward to more episodes. I hope they can keep up the good ratings down the stretch.
BORING show that I won’t watch again. but ABC marketing team did a great job with this one. It felt like a Whitney re-hash, couldn’t go or look anywhere without seeing posters or ads.
The night was dead – had nothing else to watch – figured I’d check it out – all I can say is ‘boring’ – the writing was stiff and quasi-complex, probably for the fact that the network is attempting to squeeze 3 to 4 seasons from what was generally meant to be a simple bedtime story – expect a 20% drop off next week
I disagree with you. The buzz on other sites like TVByTheNumbers, IMDB, Entertainment Weekly, E Online, TVLine is largely positive. Sure, the ratings will fall for episode 2, but my bet is they won’t fall 20%.
Keep earning that Plant paycheck there Kenny. Feedback in all the above forums, save E Online (but who cares about them anyway) was negative. Stiff acting, boring plot hook, and an ugly as sin in a 12 year boycut Ginnifer Goodwin = lots and lots of negative comments. Expect a massive drop next week.
Keep earning that Plant paycheck there Cash from the opposing networks. Feedback in all the forums Kenny noted had mostly positive comments. Good acting, exciting plot hook, and the beautiful Ginnifer Goodwin = lots and lots of positive comments. Expect a small drop next week.
I read on the Daily Variety that Revenge, Once Upon a Time and The River really impressed Paul Lee.
My daughter and I watched the show. We really enjoyed it and look forward to next week.
Regardless of the quality of the actual series, Paul Lee and company need to be given kudos for their marketing on this one.
Too bad it was a horrible mess that will never get a second season.
Great concept, and I like Morrison, Goodwin, and Carlyle, but it was painful to watch. It could be 90% better by eliminating all the scenes in “Fairy Tale land” – leave it implied.
(Not to mention Goodwin looked HORRIBLE with that short hair)
Here’s hoping Grimm is better…
I love Ginnifer’s hair short. ABSOLUTELY LOVE the pixie cut. Aren’t you tired of seeing the “same” girl with the “same” haircut on every single show?
Needless to say, the show was an entertaining hour of drama that was a delighteful departure from the norm. The exposition in dialogue was a bit much, but not enough to make me stop watching. I’m sure middle America is watching and ABC could very well have a hit on their hands. Kudos. I anxiously await Grimm as well.
Don’t watch a lot of shows on the BBC do ya? 1 out of 3 women in Europe and the UK have that exact same haircut these days. The difference is, it doesn’t look god awful on most of them. Goodwin has the wrong shaped face and ears for a cut that short, and looks horrible with it. I’m sure it’s a hit with the pedophile crowd though.
I agree that Goodwin’s short cut looked absolutely horrid. She looked like a little boy whose mother hacked at his hair with dull scissors. A truly good pixie cut does not look that uneven and ugly.
However, I thought the show was a charming delight, and the scenes in the Enchanted Forest were fabulous. As for Grimm, I’ve seen the pilot. It stinks.
Showing the “Fairy Tale Land” was one of the best things about it in my opinion. There are so many shows that try to follow the Lost model and have mystery upon mystery with nothing revealed. Once Upon a Time goes a different way and manages to tip its hand in the first episode while still leaving a lot that needs to be revealed. Basically, they reveal the truth about Storybrook but leave the question of “What are they going to do about it?”
How can anyone like this piece of garbage show? It has a remarkable lack of imagination for a show that is based on some of the most imaginative stories every created. The actors, writers and producers of should be disappointed with themselves.
I thought it was a little dull.
And that has to be the most inept evil witch in history. She couldn’t come up with a cleverer way to cast a spell to punish other people without condemning herself to 28 boring years in suburbia?
Who says that she doesn’t remember?
Just like Lost, they’ll try to backfill this show to mixed reaction.
It’s just unfortunate how much the public believed the Lost writers had everything figured out in the first four seasons. Was nice when they finally shit the bed on that finale. Expect more o’ the same here.
Director Mark Mylod knocked this out of the park. Fully realized and confidently presented.
Challenge now is to uphold his artistic standards.
Yeah, I wouldn’t say the direction (or the special effects) were that strong.
The premiere was great! One of my favorite dramas this season.
I completely agree! I absolutely loved Once Upon a Time. The themes of the show: good vs. evil, happily ever after, love, hope, the wonder of a child, faith, belief in something magical… these are all themes common among every nation and people group on this earth! It’s nice to see a show explore these themes and not only explore them but to do it so well! I love that there’s a show on that adults and children can watch together.
I thought it was entertaining and I’m looking forward to see how the story develops. But you’re right about the witch’s ineptitude. Hilarious! I anticipate a multigenerational cult following.
Pan Am isn’t worth commenting on…cancel it. “Once Upon A Time” is next. Those were “curiosity” ratings and watch them drop fast. Bad show.Hard time following it.It was stupid…hookey, cheesey. and Morrison looked bored out of her mind. And what Paul Lee thinks doesn’t matter. It’s what Anne Sweeney thinks that counts and she has taste…Lee doesn’t.He’s been a big disappointment at ABC for suppliers
LOL, you had a hard time following a show that is partially aimed at little tiny kiddies? I don’t think the show is the problem in this case… maybe you should try Sesame Street instead to get on the level you need.
Ahh, it was meh-had some good parts, but could have better explained the curse and stuff. I’ll give it ONE more. Of course, it HAS to be on next week opposite the Cowbabys and my Eagles, so,,,
I liked it, although I am a massive fan of Bill Willinghams Fables series of Graphic novels and this is just a kick in the teeth to Willingham and all the fans of the novel.
ABC was set to develop Fables were they not? Until it got trapped in development doom. Then a year or so later they release a completely bastardized version of the books which they call their own and no nods or cash go to Willingham or Publishers Vertigo i bet.
This was just as great as Pushing Daisies.
I think this shows why the NFL goes to such an extreme extent protecting their star QB’s. No Peyton Manning and they get beat by a baseball.
That was a truly horrible football game last night, although the end score was worth a laugh.
Why keep on watching when by the second quarter they were up by 34? By this time I switched to baseball even though I don’t like it.
I AM GLAD TO READ ONCE UPTON A TIME GOT A GREAT RATING. IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE HOW FUTURE SHOW WILL DO IN TO RATING DEPARTMENT. I CAN’T TO LEARN WHO IS EMMA’S SON FATHER AND WILL HE POP UP IN FUTURE SHOW.ABC GOT A WINNER ON IT HAND. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Jane Espenson from Buffy and Liz Tigelaar from Life Unexpected have joined the writing staff of Once Upon a Time.
i get the impression there are some people here who will never like anything.
is it the greatest thing ever? no.
is it a pretty decent creative tv drama? sure.
it aint a cop show, a doctor show or a lawyer show… so thats all good too.
i liked it and i’ll watch again.
Re: Once
The story was a little lame for my taste and all the fantasy stuff looked cheap. And Goodwin’s short hair, not for me.
I think this pilot was fanstastic! Honestly, it looked like a movie. It is refreshing to see something so different and so beautiful to look at on TV. It is so escapist. I can’t wait for the next episode. Grimm is just a rip off idea of this great show.
How can Grimm be a ripoff when both were created/produced at the same time.
Both Once Upon a Time & Grimm are blatant rip offs of the DC/Vertigo Comic Book series, Fables.
They should make the check out to series writer & creator Bill Willingham.

I think last night’s Colts appearance guarantees that their match-up with the Patriots on December 4th will be moved.
My wife loved the show and she also loves The Housewives of Beverly Hills and Jersey Shore, so she knows how to pick winners.
Ha! My hero.
