After its lackluster debut last Monday, there has been a series of encouraging news for Fox’s Terra Nova in the past 24 hours. First, the prehistoric drama yesterday rose to the top spot in 18-49 among all new drama series premieres in Live+3 ratings. Then the data from the international markets came in, showing a strong launch for Terra Nova in almost every territory. In Canada, the two-hour opener drew 1.4 million viewers on CityTV to become the most-watched drama in the network’s history. And then the first ratings for last night were released this morning with more good news for the rookie drama: In its second outing on Fox, Terra Nova (3.0/8) matched the fast national for its two-hour premiere despite airing from 8-9 PM vs. 8-10 PM last week. (Last week, the premiere was adjusted up in the finals, which will probably happen again today, so the 100% hold will likely carry on in the final ratings.) UPDATE 9:25 AM: Fox just released final numbers for Terra Nova, and it indeed rose to a 3.1 rating. This is the best Week 1-to-Week 2 retention for a new series this fall. At 9 PM, veteran House (3.9/9) was down a modest 7% from last fall when it aired in the more challenging 8 PM hour.
Another strong showing for CBS’ Monday comedy block: How I Met Your Mother (4.5/12) was up a tenth from last week’s fast national rating (even with the final but will probably be adjusted up again), 2 Broke Girls (4.4/11) was down a tenth, Two And A Half Men (6.1/14) was down 15% (18% from the final), and Mike & Molly (4.3/10) didn’t get much of a boost from star Melissa McCarthy’s stint on Saturday Night Live — down 12% (10% from the final as it was adjusted down). With two double-digit week-to-week declines, Two And A Half Men is now close to Charlie Sheen levels. Still, the revamped veteran seems to have reinvigorated CBS’ Monday lineup, helped by strong new addition 2 Broke Girls, the highest-rated new series this season. When was the last time we’ve seen four back-to-back series on a network logging fast national 18-49 ratings over 4? And while Men and 2 Broke Girl understandably take the spotlight, for me the overachiever of the comedy block this year is HIMYM, which continues to impress. After posting series highs for its seventh(?!)-season premiere, the series barely dropped in Week 2 and is gaining ground again in Week 3. At 10 PM, Hawaii Five-0 (3.2/8) was flat. CBS (4.3/10, 12.4 million) swept every half-hour of primetime in both 18-49 for a decisive nightly victory.
Whether it is the current cast not connecting with viewers or the series’ age starting to show, ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (3.1/7) is fading this fall. It was down another 6% last night to post the reality veteran’s lowest-rated performance show ever. At 10 PM, Castle (2.6/6) was down 7%. ABC (2.9/7, 14.9 million) still won the night in total viewers while finishing third in 18-49.
NBC’s The Sing-Off (1.8/4) was up a tenth but its lead-out, freshman The Playboy Club (1.2/3), didn’t show desperately needed improvement, down a tenth from last week and pretty much sealing its fate as one of the season’s first casualties. Rumors are flying that this may have been the last regular airing of the series, with Brian Willams’ primetime newsmagazine fast-tracked for a late October launch. NBC (1.6/4, 4.4 million) finished a distant fifth for the night in 18-49 behind CBS, Fox, ABC and Univision (2.7/7, 6.1 million)
In Week 2, CW’s Hart Of Dixie (0.9/2 in 18-34, 0.8/2 in 18-49) was even in 18-49 and up 13% in 18-34 from its premiere.

sorry about the playboy club. it’s a really nice show :\
himym continues to amaze its crazy that a show that was on the bubble the first couple years of being on is now one of cbs highest rated shows i think it would be fourth behind two and a half men, 2 broke girls and ncis
Actually HIMYM did pretty well in the 1st season, with mild, but stable dips thereafter. CBS doesn’t have to pull the trigger on so-so shows immediately, they can afford patience.
I’m not surprised that Terra Nova held on to its viewers. It’s a show you have to pay attention to, and it had a big two hour premiere on a busy night in the fall. Of course people DVR’d it. I imagine if they had broken it up into two nights instead of having a two hour premiere the ratings would have been higher the first night. Two hours of attention is a lot to ask of viewers when you’re an untested show and there are other things on.
Plus it’s a sci-fi show. Nerds are the ones who show their families how the DVR works and are the ones who watch TV on hulu.
CBS is having great Monday nights, but the drop of Hawaii 50 after Mike&Molly is huge. CBS is wasting the strong lead in from Mike&Molly with Hawaii. CBS can do way better in that time slot, a better drama or a new sitcom. They should had premiered there Person of Interest.
TPBC is gone. No surprise.
Terra Nova isn’t the next Galactica or Lost or Game of Thrones (even putting it in the same sentence as these shows is ridiculous) BUT it’s pleasant to watch, especially for those of us who are frustrated by the endless incarnations of talent shows and procedurals.
Hopefully, the writing gets better as the season progresses. “Dad, how do you know if a boy likes you?” Ouch. Wince. Groan.
Have you noticed how both sci fi Spielberg produced series (Falling Skies and Terra Nova) have such nice premises but the execution just caters to the lowest common denominator? I’m a nerd like the poster above BUT the writing, setting and general execution of this show is becoming offensive. The happy family? The super clean slacker boys? The tough guy general who is good at heart? This is the kind of crap why people beat up nerds, they think we like stories so stupid.
the show was doomed from the “hey, kiddo” moment in the first scene of the pilot. if that’s how families are in 2149, maybe we should let nature run its course.
Catering gets you ratings. Quality gets you Firefly.
I do enjoy “2 Broke Girls” and think it is one of the best new shows. Mike and Molly is a fantastic show and I look forward to watching it. “Billy” and “Melissa” are just great. Light hearted comedy like CBS’ Monday nite lineup is a good way to start the week.
CBS Monday is killing these networks, their becoming the new Must See TV now that they got 2 Broke Girls in the mix.
DWtS is dying!
Terra Nova held on better than I thought it would and House did a solid job with a great episode.
Sing-Off improved but Playboy Club was a dud, hopefully Bob gives it one more shot to prove itself.
Hart of Dixie held nicely in week 2.
That may be true but ABC’s Wednesdays aint no slouch either. Like the old slogan said ABC’s the place to be
HEY FOX Terra Nova is GREAT, but X Factor SUCKS ! WOW Simon and Paula together again HOW BORING it’s so American Idol been there, done that, so i’ll pass. WILL NEVER BEAT AMERICAN IDOL
Never seen this Hawaii Five-0 reboot. Is it any good? The promos look like a tepid, milkquetoast version of the original. Jack Lord is Steve McGarrett, period. This show doesn’t seem to challenge that, but maybe I’m wrong? It just looks “bleh.”
Not very good. They needed a tough guy to be McGarrett, but the new kid Alex O’Loughlin is too metrosexual soft to be believable at all.
You have got to be kidding. Alex O’Loughlin is a great Steve McGarrett. I also love Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, and Grace Park. They make a super Hawaii Five-0 team. Best show on TV.
This Hawaii five-0 is a reboot and is not really tied to the original. I saw most of season 1 and enjoyed it as light entertainment with a little action with a few wise cracks mixed in. I have not enjoyed the 3 episodes so far of season 2. They seem to have gotten rid of several characters (at least 1 with good reson)and replaced them. The stories seem too contrived. They just seem to be trying too hard. Hope they get it figured out because the formula & main cast have some promise.
You should give the new Hawaii Five-0 a try. I really liked the old Hawaii Five-O with Jack Lord; however, I love love and adore the new Hawaii Five-0 with Alex O’Loughlin. It is my favorite show on TV.
I know I am in a minority here, but 2 Broke Girls is the worst show on the air. The entire show is based on one toilet joke after another. And come on, a horse living on the patio just so they can do horse crap jokes. Garrett Morris is one of the most talented funny people around and he should be ashamed of the writing on the show.
You may be in the minority, but you are not alone. I’ve watched Two Broke Girls twice, and both episodes had jokes based on rape. I realize that CBS is where standards go to die, but even for them…
I don’t wish to sound like an arch-conservative (or even a Pharisee) but I think since the rabid voting base for these reality shows is usually midwest and southern there might be a point where the Bible belt cannot embrace either transgendered or openly gay entertainment figures. I would not be shocked if the ratings were to improve if either Chaz or Carson leave– I’m not saying I’m for it– just saying I wouldn’t be shocked.
they booed a gay soldier, so you’re probably not far off.
I don’t think it’s necesarrily the trans or gay angle, it’s just that the “celebrities” are boring and rather minor in the public’s eye. This includes Chaz, who has never displayed any discernable talent, and what’s his name, the irritatingly queeny guy from that other show.
I agree. It is too low to go to those kind of jokes. Even for cbs that all cares about is $$ and ratings.
CBS has a goodie w/2 Broke Girls-they a little more storyline – mix it up with the 1/liners.
Am I the only one who thinks 2 1/2 men needs new writers, funny lines and something more for Kutcher to do than act silly and juvenile? Not surprised viewing audience dropping. Was my favorite show, but very disappointed at last weeks episode. Only funny line was when Alan asked Jake how many zeros in a million.
