Tim Allen proved his drawing power last night when his new sitcom, ABC’s Last Man Standing, opened with an excellent 3.5/10 in adults 18-49 and 13 million viewers overall at 8 PM against baseball and CBS’ juggernaut NCIS. Last Man Standing eclipsed Suburgatory as the highest-rated new comedy series on ABC this fall, and Allen did it all by himself, with no help from a lead-in, to give ABC the much needed anchor for opening a new comedy night. This was the most watched 8 PM comedy premiere in 7 years and the highest-rated in 18-49 in 5. The hourlong Last Man Standing was up 9% in the demo from the premiere of drama No Ordinary Family in the slot last fall and posted ABC’s highest 18-49 rating in the 8 PM hour in 2 years. The comedy boosted the Dancing With The Stars result show (3.2/8, 16.6 million) to a season high, up 10% in the demo from last week. But the gains didn’t carry over to the 10 PM hour where Body Of Proof (1.9/5) was down 2 tenths from last week’s fast national.
CBS’s NCIS (3.9/11, 18.9 million) was down two tenths in the demo but still rock solid and, with Fox’s New Girl preempted for baseball, the veteran drama won the night in both 18-49 and total viewers. NCIS: LA (3.3/8, 15.4 million) and rookie Unforgettable (2.3/8, 11.8 million) was down a tenth each from their fast national ratings last week. CBS (3.1/8, 15.3 million) won every half-hour and the night in 18-49 and total viewers. Reliable data for Fox’s coverage of Game 3 of the ALCS championship series will be released later today. NBC’s The Biggest Loser (2.0/5) matched its fast national from last Tuesday, while Parenthood (2.1/5) was up a tenth.
Nice rebound for the CW’s drama Ringer (1.7 million, 0.8/2 in 18-49), which was up 15% in viewers from last week and 33% in adults 18-49 and 18-34. The series could get an additional boost from airing repeats on Wednesday night starting today. (It replaced canceled reality series H8R.)

8 Simple Rules was the same show, in the same time period and opened with a 5.6.
That was almost a decade ago. This is a great number for today, especially against NCIS. And a 5.6 is nothing compared to what Home Improvement did in the 90s. People love Tim Allen.
You can’t really compare a show from 2002 to a show in 2011.
EWWW! Last Man Standing was dreadful! I watched the entire premiere and didn’t laugh once. I hope it crashes and burns next week.
Maybe you didn’t laugh because you couldn’t relate but middle America especially parents with all daughters or children dealing with growing up can relate and probably laughed their butts off….
I hope you aren’t in the industry because being a smart executive is knowing when something is funny even if you don’t find it funny. You think every executive, jr exec, asst laughed when HANGOVER was released?
If you are going to comment – say something smarter.
Also – hoping a show crashes and burns?!? Really – what kind of person are you. Obviously you aren’t in the industry because you should never wish someone else’s program will fail. Think about your ethics if you can think…
GIA DIDN’T SEE THAT IT IS HOME IMPROVEMENT WITH THREE DAUGHTER INSTEAD OF SONS. IT WILL BE INTERESTED TO SEE WHERE THE SHOW WILL GO. I AM GLAD THAT THE SHOW DIDN’T USED THE LAUGH TRACK SO MUCH. THE WIFE LOVED THE DRINK ALOT. THE THREE DAUGHTER GIVE NEW MEANING TO THE WORD EGO PROBLEM. I GOT A FEELING THAT GIA WON’T GET WISH ABOUT THE DOWNFELL OF TIM ALLEN’ NEW SHOW. GOOD LUCK TO THE FUTURE. YOUR TRULY CHARLES DAVID HASKELL
Yeah, that’ll be cool, so you can go back and watch Jersey Shore, dumbass.
Love Tim Allen. Nice to have him back on TV.
Laughed out loud for the one hour. It’s Home Improvement, but it is still funny. Allen, Travis and Elizondo are all superb and the writing is solid.
Good for Tim and ABC but I think those numbers will plummet in the coming weeks. I like Allen but the show ranks with Whitney in my book as one of the worst comedies this season. If others are like me, they won’t return after last night.
I agree. Love Tim Allen, but he needs a smarter, wittier comedy. Last Man Standing was terrible! What happened to all the good comedy writers? The ones with clever and funny lines? We’re in a rut with stupid comedies…nothing clever about them. Too bad, too. We all need a good laugh once in a while.
I’m hooked.
How long before the actors who played Al, Jill, and the kids show up as different characters, and the audience gets a kick out of it. A real wink to long time fans, right? Ugh.
It’s solid 8pm family entertainment that will go the distance. If you’re expecting hip and edgy look elsewhere.
I wasn’t expecting hip and edgy, just funny. Or at least humorous. And comedy was nowhere to be found in this show.
As for your comment, “Sitcom Maven”(!?), that it “will go the distance”, I’ll borrow a line from Dorothy Parker and say that
Last Man Standing runs the comedy gamut from A to B.
Shows like Whitney and Last Man Standing make me pine for the days of Caroline In The City and The Single Guy.
Its the first episode everyone wanted to see but I doubt those numbers hold. This could crash bad the second week and then get cancelled.
The nostalgia factor. The curiosity factor. Some factor other than actual laughs drew an audience. Tim Allen’s show is a dreadful, completely unfunny mess. Not a single laugh in it.
I would say that it’ll drop like a rock in the ratings but Jim Belushi’s last sitcom lasted for several years and that was one painfully unfunny show so there’s no underestimating the public’s appetite for dreadful TV.
The best I can say for it is that at least it wasn’t another reality show.
I loved the show I think some people just don’t have a sense of humor and like to trash everything on TV. I watched the entire premier and laughed the whole time!! Nothing will ever be like home improvement or Friends but this was a good show!! And I am adding it to my list to watch on Tuesday nights.
If RULES OF ENGAGEMENT is still on tv, then anything is possible
ROE is an excellent show if they’d just dump David Spade. The cast is hilarious and the writing is terrific. Spade just brings it down – he can’t act and he’s not funny or believable as a ladies’ man.
NCIS is the BEST SHOW ON T V If you are not watching it you are missing a great show with a great cast. P S I don’t work for CBS!
The greatest thing about American television is that it can offer drivel like NCIS that someone thinks is amazing and feels a need to cheer about but still has room for quality programs like Parenthood that offers real drama, fine acting and superb writing.
Time Allen’s new show is good enough for now, the first episodes are usually the worst ever produced but it was entertaining and has room to grow. Hopefully they will make Nancy Travis’s part a real character as that would make the show bloom very nicely.
If you haven’t watched it yet, take note of Nancy Travis’ lines. they are all cries for help. Her character is a drunk and a meth head. “I’m going to have 3 glasses of wine and go to bed.” “Yeah right, like I turned your room into a meth lab.” This woman clearly needs a special episode.
I like seeing Tim Allen back on TV — its more old school than Modern Family, yes, but that’s what he is and should be doing.
Very strong start for LMS as I wasn’t quite expecting to see results that high especially in the demo. The good news for LMS is that it went up for the second episode which was the better of the two episodes. What makes LMS’ debut numbers so amazing is the fact that it got those numbers on its own in a timeslot that ABC has struggled with for a number of years now. It’ll be interesting to see how LMS settles in next week. If it does settle in then ABC might have the center-piece they need to build that new TGIF block. ABC definitely should’ve gone with Work It instead of Man Up which will bleed hard for LMS. Better with You should’ve been kept to go with LMS but its not like anybody really expected LMS to hit this strong either.
What’s up with Tim’s face? Looks like it’s been pulled tighter than a drum and injected with Restylane. Yuck.
We watched last night and loved it. Hope it continues to do well. I’m so relieved to see comedies making a huge comeback. Tired of all the law dramas, medical dramas, etc.
Loved LMS! Tim Allen is great, has great comedy chops, is an appealing guy, the daughters are all talented as all get out and Nancy Travis is terrific. Great cast, great writing and directing. This should be a hit and I will be watching every week. Go Tim!!!!
I’d like to see a guest appearance from Wilson.
Expected more from Tim Allen, to much going on, They could have made 10 shows from all the stuff that was happening, the young guy has potential, I’ll give it a couple weeks to get smart for the viewers, Mark from Palm Harbor, Fl.
Then Tim had 3 boys in Home Improvement. Now he has 3 daughters?
Let me get this right. You refute a comment about longevity with a paraphrased comment about comedic ability. Go back to sleep, yawn.
