RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Pan Am’, Everything Else Down On Sunday
Showtime’s new drama Homeland premiered with 1.08 million viewers last night, delivering the pay cable network’s highest-rated drama debut in eight years, since Dead Like Me’s 1.11 million in June 2003. It was the third consecutive Showtime drama series premiere to post Showtime’s best numbers since Dead Like Me, starting with Shameless (982,000) in January and Borgias (1.06 million) in April. But while Shameless and Borgias aired at 9 PM, Homeland ran at 10 PM, following the blockbuster sixth-season premiere of Dexter (2.2 million), which was 24% from last year and marked the hit series’ highest-rated premiere ever and Showtime’s best original series opener in 14 years, since Stargate in 1997. Including the 11 PM and 1 AM, encores, the Dexter premiere averaged 2.76 million viewers, up 18% from last year. Homeland, which held onto half of its Dexter lead-in, averaged a total of 1.38 million viewers for the night, factoring in the 12 AM and 2 AM encores. Including online/on-demand pre-premiere viewing, the Homeland premiere episode has been seen by 2.78 million.

Unbelievable numbers for Dexter! And for a great premiere.
Not so good for Homeland, especially based on the massive hype. This show looks doomed.
What do you expect? People are tired of this “we have seen the enemy and he is us” crap. I like all the actors attached to this show, but the premise was boring, and the show itself was just plain dull.
I agree.
Premise of Terra Nova is socialism will work this time with the dinasaurs and Mr. Mom!
Yeah. I would’ve thought Homeland would hold Dexter’s numbers. A 50 percent drop off is nothing to get excited about.
I guess you missed the part where it was Showtime’s best premiere in 8 years?
Not to mention that it nearly doubled its viewers thanks to the fact the episode was available online for 2 weeks…
I couldn’t disagree more with most of the posts on here. “Homeland” is a white-knuckle thriller; perfectly cast and extremely well written. As a huge fan of the Bourne Trilogy, John LeCarre, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy, etc., this falls right into that genre. I love it! On the other hand, as a huge “Dexter” fan, I think the series is off to a dismal start this season. Hugely unrealistic with no suspense or the sense of urgency felt in previous seasons.
How could anyone take the ginger seriously as a former soldier, especially someone who was married to Baccarin? He’s got a goofy-ass face.
Maybe because the “ginger” is Damian Lewis, who quite memorably played a soldier in “Band of Brothers” on HBO.
ever heard of band of brothers?
Because he was awesome as Lt./Captain Winters in Band of Brothers? Baccarin was a really strange casting choice though. Did they marry when she was 14 or what?
I thought Homeland was great. I didn’t get to see Dexter but I shall watch it tonight. Hopefully, Homeland does great.
Given the reviews and promotion, this can only be seen as a huge dissappointment.
And it felt like a slow ep of 24.
Woooo Dexter…loved the premiere, also liked Homeland alot..will be watching
I thought Homeland was terrific. A great addition to Showtine. So far, it’s the only show of the new fall season that I’ve found interesting.
completely agree!
Dexter’s numbers seem to get higher and higher just as the show gets worse. How lame and repetitive does this show have to get before people finally get bored with it?
That’s why Homeland didn’t get such huge ratings: viewers prefer comfort food to riveting, intriguing television.
Dexter as comfort food? What show are you watching? Last night’s premiere was fantastic.
Homeland was nothing more than a tired retread of every tired retread of 24.
Homeland was movie-quality in production value, with great performances. I was really impressed with Danes. Overall best new show I’ve seen so far this year (can’t deem it the absolute best till I see Hell On Wheels)
Check “like”. Agree 100%.
‘Homeland’ is best new show since ‘Thrones’. Riveting.
The network better hold on to Dexter because it is a great show and has a great father-son relationship going to his highschool reunion was genius. Keep Michael and that cast happy. They will not have a show again like this.
Smart execs = good shows. Pearlena I. wanted to do a show on a redeeming serial killer. Everyone thought she was nuts. Yes I know the series is based on a book but before that she was developing an original version. I will keep my Showtime subscription if you keep up with kick ass shows like Dexter, Nurse Jackie, and that Gigilos show (just kidding about the last one).
Homeland is an AWESOME show. The plot and premise are great. Claire Danes character is really interesting.
Damien Lewis is excellent. I’ve always wanted to see more of him after Band of Brothers, but never found him in anything. It’s great to see him on this new show. I’ve seen a lot of the new pilots this fall and so far this is my favorite one.
Can’t wait for next week’s episode.
