EXCLUSIVE: Syfy is developing a TV series based on this year’s MRC/Universal Pictures movie The Adjustment Bureau, which was written, directed and produced by George Nolfi and starred Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. Former Smallville executive producers Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin are writing the TV adaptation, which is being produced by MRC. Nolfi is executive producing with Swimmer and Slavkin, with Michael Hackett, a producer on the feature, serving as co-executive producer. The 2011 sci-fi thriller, based on Philip K. Dick’s short story Adjustment Team centered on a rising politician (Damon) whose budding romance with a dancer (Blunt) is intercepted by the Adjustment Bureau, a secret
organization with special powers, which uses them to ensure that people’s lives follow the chairman of the Bureau’s plan for them. MRC doesn’t normally do traditional network development, but the deal for The Adjustment Bureau stems from the fact that Syfy is a sister network of Universal Pictures, which released the MRC-produced movie. In addition to Adjustment Bureau, WME-repped Slavkin and Swimmer also are writing a high-tech character-driven procedural for NBC and Wolf Films.

The film could’ve been over in 11 minutes if the men in hats just uttered these 9 magic words:
“Stay away from her or we’ll turn you gay”.
Good luck to those guys. Stern is the most difficult executive I’ve ever encountered in 20 plus years in the business. He micromanages to an extreme degree, and vastly overestimates his own judgement. He is, in a word, a fool.
Sci-fi is a great brand and should be doing much better than they are. The channel won’t until Stern is gone. Nobody wants to work there more than once.
Loved The Adjustment Bureau movie but am concerned this is coming on SyFy for one reason: Seems to me only lame stuff shows up there. That said, I will surely give it a chance.
Such a bad flick… nice to see SyFy picking through the scrap heap here.
The movie was so ridiculous and bad. How can they do a tv show?
Because ‘Sy-fy’ wants to do it.
They went down the tubes several years ago.
How will they manage to fit in ghosts and wrestling, though?
Yikes. “Adjustment Bureau” was a horrible movie and its only bright spot was the interaction with Damon and Blunt. The series for “Source Code” seems like a great idea. “Adjustment Bureau?” Awful.
Uh, yeah. See, there’s already this series with control-freak men in hats, called “Fringe”…
A show on Syfy, about a “secret organization with special powers.”
Now that’s different!
syfy cancels good shows and keeps terrible cheap ones…plus they play stupid monster bug movies all weekend.
I hate syfy channel…but love good science fiction.
The adjustment bureau was a good movie..watch syfy mess this up.
I’m really interested to see on how will that come out. The movie was quite interesting and had a good story line- it was something different. The movie ended with a happy ending, so I’m wondering if they would use the same characters? Or are they just using the idea? Aniway like I said it will be interesting to see on how that will come out.
A TV series version of a film that did only mediocre business at the box office and with critics, that also has two choices when it comes to premise: either become a weekly rehash of the movie, centering on people trying to beat their “adjustments,” or become “Touched By An Angel” with a sci-fi twist.
Feh.
lame movie lame concept. lol I cant see it grabbing any kind of viewers. heck the vastly more intelligent shows like caprica died pretty quickly on that channel.
A movie about God’s omnipotence, that never mentions God, is now becoming a TV series. Oh Hollywood, you so crazy.
This could be a cool Mad Men’esque show … but not on Syfy.
Given Slavkin and Swimmer’s highly inventive scripts over a seven year history at Smallville, we have no doubt that they will surely avoid the lame (as noted by previous commentor)and deliver set of inventive and entertaining episodes.
I thought the movie was kond of weak, the lighter, quirky tone of the Bueau and Roger Sterling didn’t fit withe seriousness of Damon’s performance and the crusadind politician storyline (which kind of made the love story seem petty or out of place), but I could see it making a good TV show adjusting different people’s fates each week, like the Twilight Zone, some heavier some lighter with some kind of guy on the run from the Bureau meta-story over the course of the season… A rogue Bureau officer would be a good Protagonist or sidekick…
A valid concern, but I think that it could be properly executed with the proper writing and casting,as was evident from the superb freshman “X-Men”-inspired series “Alphas”.
That could actually be something decent. The movie was really interesting until it devolved into an overwrought romance. The idea of the Adjustment Bureau is great, though.
On the plus side, this surely means a lot more work for Canadian actors and crew.
I can’t tell if you’re being facetious,but,regardless, good one…
This is too bad. It’s a great movie, and a great premise – it should be on HBO or Showtime. The Sci Fi network will somehow completely screw it up, like they do with all their science fiction. OTOH, the show may be really good, and they cancel it in season 2 because it’s not profitable to have a scripted show vs endless bullshit Ghost reality shows.
They should just start showing reruns of ‘Touched By An Angel’ instead.
It’s essentially the same thing, and would certainly cost a lot less. The poor dears at Syfy are always so budget conscious …
its already been done its called “Fringe”
Hmm, this could be interesting. Although I’d like to see NBCU take a chance and put this on NBC instead – bigger budget for one, and second if would be at least a departure from the stale medical and police procedurals that populate scripted drama timeslots.
Maybe The Adjustment Bureau series would be an employment opportunity for some of the Eureka cast that will be out-of-work next year.
That show is already on the air, it’s called Fringe.
