Some encouraging news for Fox’s Terra Nova ahead of its key second airing tonight: Despite its modest opening with a 3.1 Live+Same Day rating among adults 18-49 that came in below expectations, the big-budget dinosaur drama has risen to No. 1 among all new drama series premieres this season with a healthy 1.0 rating bump in Live+3, bringing its 18-49 rating to a 4.1. That represents the largest L+3 gain for a new drama series. Fox’s comedy New Girl is the leader in L+3 gains for freshman series overall with an increase of 1.2 ratings points.

This show is terrible. Just give it 3 more episodes before everyone is tired of the corniness and stops abandoning the ship like they did with that crap last season called The Event.
Until they air tonight’s episode…
I think it has potential to be honest. The pilot was definitely rough in spots but frankly these days I feel anything that is NOT a reality show should be given a chance to find its feet. There are a few series that show potential this season and should be given a chance. The alternative is a slate full of “reality” and dance and singing competition shows; a sickening thought to anyone who values real creativity.
If nothing else I hope they were smart enough to make the last episode of season one with closure in mind. It could do huge DVD business.
The problem is the Broadcast networks don’t Respect the TV audience’s intelligence. They water down everything and add broad ideas to Genre shows. When a show is too smart they dumb it down or cancel it. If a show is too dumb and taking baby steps they assume there was a problem with marketing. Reality Television will never fully take over. If ever does some people will cable programming and most of the broadcast networks core audience will be like the current state of NBC and CW.
Love the show … glad others are watching. Emmy worthy? No. A fun hour? Yes. Sometimes that is all people are looking for.
Sex? Yes! A fun hour? NO NO NO!
The event was really terrible, watched the whole season recently, the format used was rather tedious… However i am looking forward to terra nova
I sat through the pilot and came to the conclusion that it’s “Lost” with dinosaurs. It’s not well written and the actors are practically chewing the scenery. I don’t think I’ll be tuning back in.
Dollhouse enjoyed a comparable bump but Fox’s interest in these numbers is marginal since the whole upside for time-shifting is that the viewer (ESPECIALLY the younger viewer) is skipping commercials. And product placement/integration is impossible for this series because of its premise/setting.
Fox will find it very hard to convert Terra Nova’s time-shifters into live viewers especially now that they’ve shot their load with the promo for the premiere and have some much lower-budgeted episodes of this series in the pipeline. It comes down to the writing, and NOBODY is saying this is a brilliantly written series.
I’ve always been up for a good dino-centric show and despite the early reviews was still interested to see what Spielberg and company had put together.
As soon as the group of well dressed, well groomed slacker kids showed up I knew this was going to be a lost cause. Any colony that is 7 years old and struggling to survive in a hostile environment has got all on hands on deck and this bit of pandering to a certain demographic makes the whole show look ridiculous with characters who would only survive in a wealthy, industrialized civilization with parents who give them allowances.
Someone got (or was forced to take) some bad advice when putting this concept together. Too bad so sad seeya later.
“terra nova”=horrible program, which will be going the way of the dinosaurs very soon-as in extinct…..
I hope the show survives because anything’s better than the glut of crime dramas/procedurals and reality series and I love the concept of going back in time to the Dinosaur era, however, they do need to improve the writing. The teenagers were beyond annoying and it’s improbable they would have all survived.
Crap is crap, whether it’s timeshifted or not. And I agree with the poster who said that it’s being timeshifted primarily to fast forward through the commercials.
And if that is the case, then why support it with advertising at all?
Terra Nova will play out the original 13 and then vanish from the air.
“Lost with dinos.” Hee.
I watch a TON of TV and have been for many years (I have to do so because I work in the business)… This show is nothing like The Event (which was a waste of time and talent – IMO)… This show has above-average Actors that, in a world where a viewer needs to suspend all reality, shine and deliver convincing performances. The writing is very good, and I can imagine, as with most complicated stories, the first few episodes will be explaining back-story and relationships, etc… In any case, I am willing to give this show a chance in a big way, as I think they have all of the ingredients for a successful series… Unfortunately for other new dramas, few – if any – are as exciting, well acted, and have off-the-chart production value like Terra Nova…
I say buckle in, it will be worth the ride…
this show is kinda offensive, the portrayal of dinosaurs is very much stereotypical. Spielberg has done more harm to the dino community than the asteroid itself.
THANK YOU! Too many have remained silent for too long. When will Hollywood cease projecting the dino community as either violent fanatics or subservient property, ready to do man’s bidding. The dinosaur community is a colorful & diverse one. Aside from the vibrant array of color, talons, teeth, and sizes, the film & television industry has homogenized the species to the point where their projected culture practically ignores the different ages the now fossilized community has withstood (compared to man’s short reign). Listen up FOX – It’s time to end the stereotypes!
(They don’t have a “like” button, so I had to make do)
For all the expensive, well-planned effects, the writing was so poor it is somewhat comical. They introduced a Blade Runner-esque world, quickly got lost in a cliche and melodramatic central storyline, and then entered the land of the dinosaurs – in 15 minutes of screen time. Jurassic Park was based on a best-selling novel. You can’t anchor a TV series in big effects, there’s 1K script pages a season. ’24′ was action-packed, but the stories made sense, there was at least something resembling a cohesive narrative.
It beats shows like “Desperate Houswives” (sooo glad that waste of show is almost done), and any remake of TV series from the past (Charlies’ Angels). At least it has potential, I am going to keep giving it a shot, even though I really don’t think the TV show ratings people really count all the viewers watching, ie other countries. Hardly seems fair to count only one continent for TV viewership.
I love this show. It’s relatively clean, which shows that the writers can think with something other than their genitals. It has a plot, which is very rare to find in something other than a murder mystery. It’s not a reality show, which is a relief. I like the acting. I think it’ll make a good run.
I think the big story here is the Live +3 rating (which I believe is Neilsen data for DVR’s) and how it is being used to tout numbers. It’s a huge shift in the way series are rated and if nothing else, it will allow shows a bit more time to find footing if only because it takes a bit more time to discern those DVR numbers and dilineate them from normal Neilsen data. Now, what advertisers think about this and how they value data that infers commercial skipping,is to be determined. But no doubt, the world is changing.
The pilot episodes were lukewarm, though the show did have potential… until I saw episode 3. I’m done, the production and writing are terrible! I was also not expecting to be thrown a more episodic drama (mistake) rather than a serial one. This show infuriates me, as it will make it more difficult for potentially well written dramas in the future to receive this kind of budget. I don’t understand why the writers took a safe, cliched approach to a show like this… the show is one step forward (CGI) and two steps backward.
Thanks FOX for promising a hundred dollar bill on the floor and then screwing us while we are bent over… unbelievable.
Warmed over Jurassic Park/Avatar hybrid. Stale leftovers are good once and that’s it. Too afraid to invest in the mother and her two daughters and make the show irresistable around the tired dinosaur theme. Unless they come up with a fire breathing T-rex, can’t see much hope for this show. They need to 1)Get rid of the wormhole so nobody else can get through or go back 2)Have dragon-like t rex type monsters eat and burn everybody to a crisp except the mother and her two daughters 3)bring in some good writers and directors
