EXCLUSIVE: In the highest-profile migration of feature talent to television so far this development season, Oscar-winning filmmakers Ethan Coen and Joel Coen are set to executive produce an hourlong single-camera comedy for Fox, which the two co-created with another feature writer, Phil Johnston (Cedar Rapids). The project, titled HarveKarbo, has received a script commitment with significant penalty from Fox. It hails from Imagine TV, whose principal Brian Grazer is credited with luring the Coen brothers to television. (Ethan and
Joel Coen did their 2003 feature Intolerable Cruelty with Imagine). HarveKarbo, which will be written by Johnston, features the type of quirky, offbeat characters that have become a staple of the Coen brothers’ movies. It follows the title character — an ill-tempered LA private investigator whose cases frequently involve the depraved doings of the Hollywood elite — and his deadbeat friends in Los Angeles’ El Segundo. Ethan Coen, Joel Coen, Johnston, Grazer and Francie Calfo are executive producing for Imagine TV and 20th Century Fox TV.
The Coen brothers have won 4 Academy Awards: 3 in 2008 for No Country For Old Men (best picture, writing and directing) and one in 1997 for Fargo (writing). They have a total of 13 Oscar nominations, including 3 this past year for True Grit, and most recently wrote the upcoming caper comedy Gambit, directed by Michael Hoffman. Johnston recently wrote Disney Animation’s Wreck It Ralph, which will be released in November 2012, and is currently writing Reply All for DreamWorks with Zach Galifianakis attached. Ethan Coen, Joel Coen are with UTA, Johnston is with CAA.

Luring the Coen’s into actually writing a pilot is a BIG F’N CATCH.
Just attaching their name as producers, well, not so much…
Pretty much. If they’re not writing the script, I’m kind of meh on the whole thing.
They aren’t writing, they’re just supervising.
Are you kidding? Did you see Cedar Rapids? Dude is gooooooooooood. And a great fit with Coen sensibility.
CEDAR RAPIDS sucked, big time. It was just a big mess of unfunny.
Cedar Rapids was underwhelming, but I think that had more to do with the direction and some of the casting choices.
The script was hilarious and fits perfectly with the Coen “brand.”
Looking forward to this.
Agree completely. Initially I was very excited now my reaction is much more like Brick’s, though if it airs I’ll still probably check it out. I wish they would write it, even just the pilot.
I love it when the Coens put fresh twists on familiar genres, so I really wish them well with this project.
Coen Brothers for TV? I dunno, they aren’t exactly the purveyors of mainstream entertainment.
Not one film of theirs has grossed more than $75M in the US.
Except for their last one, TRUE GRIT, which did over $170M. Fact check.
It would be nice if Deadline would fact check comments which are obviously enough wrong. I clearly remember the Deadline post about TRUE GRIT making $100M domestic…
Remember what Fox sister station FX did to PI Noir Dramedy gem of a show TERRIERS. It literally changed my perception of what is quality TV. It will always be apart of me.
Terriers Synopsis: EX-cop Hank Dolworth starts an unlicensed PI business with his friend ex-burglar Britt Pollack. Together they solve crimes but take no responsibility for their personal life’s.
“Cedar Rapids” was a desperately unfunny waste of some talented people. Whoa, the reputed religious guy is…wait for it…a money-grubbing hypocrite! Zounds, the originality! The cutting edge, right there! A hooker with an implied heart of gold! Uptight midwestern guy who’s liberated with some sex and drugs, and probably some rock n’ roll! I mean…why wasn’t “Cedar Rapids” on the Black List?
That writer’s participation the in the series gives me no hope it at all.
Coen Bros are the shit and Phil is a damn good writer. I’m betting on this team to create a winner. Not to mention, Phil’s a great dude.
You’re betting what? I’ll take the other side.
Maybe it’s just sour grapes, but as an experienced TV writer, producer, and director, I have to admit that it always tickles me that so many of the big Hollywood guys (Spielberg, Lucas, Scorsese etc.) usually really suck whenever they try to make TV shows. Of course, I would be glad to help…
Hope I am proven wrong here. Best of luck and all that, guys. I’m all for raising the bar.
While there were a few stereotypical elements in Cedar Rapids, most of it was smart, funny and sweet, so completely understand why the Coens spark to the this writer. I’ll definitely watch.
Coens plus Imagine…hmmm…Intolerable Cruelty is easily the worst Coen Brothers film eever. Now, the best film makers of their generation and the only unique voice join forces with the makers of Playboy Club and Parenthood…
Have to disagree on that one. While “Cruelty” is one of their weaker efforts, the honor of worst Coen Bros. film has to go to “The Ladykillers”. Completely unwatchable.
People outside of Hollywood couldn’t care any less about Hollywood.
Fail.
Right, because US Weekly, People Magazine, and the like just rot on the stands. And when the hell will that Perez Hilton website ever take off? I heard there’s this show called Entourage.
Isnt keeping comedy energy up for an hour going to be very high wall to scale?
intolerable cruelty and ladykillers are the only bad spots on what has been nothing short of an outstanding career. millers crossing may in fact be the best movie of all time.
agree with this. Miller’s Crossing is their greatest film. It’s genius. It was totally ignored when it first came out too.
Pitch it: Columbo meets Fargo West.
Help with a serious question please:
What does it mean “a script commitment with significant penalty from Fox.”?
Does this mean that if Fox doesn’t make the film, or hit certain dates towards production, then they have to pay a penalty fee(s)?
Any help explaining this to me like I’m 2 years old is much appreciated.
Thanks!
Sounds like an LA version of Bored to Death…
Phil is gonna write the shizzle outta that banizzle! That may be a little too urban for your Pier 1 Imports lovin’ mugs, but just deal!
So they are producing and “co-creating,” whatever that means, NOT directing or editing nor, I will assume, using the brilliant Roger Deakins. It might be noted that Imagine and Glazer helped them launch Intolerable Cruelty,in my estimation one of the two or three duds in a corpus of solid, exciting work. Good luck!
