The Dark Knight Rises, which has been shooting in Los Angeles and other settings worldwide, is about to head for New York City locales that may include the vicinity of Occupy Wall Street protests, the Los Angeles Times reports. Producers of the third movie in Christopher Nolan’s vision of the Batman saga recently issued a casting call under the code name “Magnus Rex,” and cast members have been told the shoot could include scenes shot at the Occupy Wall Street protests. Those demonstrations likely will be taking place during the two-week period the Warner Bros-Legendary Pictures production is scheduled to be shooting in the city that happens to be nicknamed Gotham, starting October 29. That doesn’t mean specifics of the protests will figure in the storyline, but they could add authenticity to themes of the franchise. The shoot was planned months ago, and Nolan most likely would use the protests as a backdrop for something that’s already in his script. Exact locations remain secret, but the casting call specified that interested actors should have “military and/or law enforcement training/experience, weapons training, and/or martial arts training.” Maybe they’re also recruiting for location security.

So if I understand this story correctly, and I may not, the intentions of the producers of the movies would be to exploit the protesters by using them in their sad circumstances as free background for their potential billion dollar making movie. The reason the protestors are on Wall Street in the first place is because they feel powerless in a society that favors the rich and takes advantage of and even abuses the less fortunate. This action seems to be proving their point.
I doubt they’ll mind; hipsters love Batman.
What kind of ludicrous statement is that? These aren’t hipsters, they’re people from all walks of life. Batman’s themes aside, Warner Brothers represents the exact corporate greed they’re protesting.
Let’s wait and see how many protestors are willing to be in the new Batman movie. Then we’ll see how dedicated they are to their cause.
Why are they protesting lincoln center
The protestors should NOT give Nolan/TIME WARNER a pass on this. Poor taste/utterly tone deaf move by Team Batman.
Give me a break. Being in a movie will be the most productive thing this crybabies have done all year. Unlike the protests, this movie is actually putting money into the economy and giving us work. I forgot though, can’t let the jobs get in the way of your little stunt!
Shut up. That’s all.
I’ll just be glad when the production wraps. I’m a huge fan and am looking forward to the film next July, but I desperately want the horrific tide of spoiler pics and headlines [Deadline has been GREAT about not posting this sort of thing] to cease. And I know a TON of more photos/videos will leak from the New York shoot.
Hi, Phil. I am a supporter of Occupy Wall Street and the message. I understand your concerns here. One thing I would say though is that there is potential that images of the protests in the movie could have thematic resonance that could aid/support the cause. I can’t say because I haven’t seen the script. I mean, the likelihood TDKR will end up being something so overtly symbolic as “District 9″ is extremely low. Nonetheless, there are appropriate uses of real-life events in artistic projets. And comic books — Batman’s venue — have a great and rich history of echoing real-life political themes in profound ways. I hope that’s the case here.
“The likelihood TDKR will end up being something so overtly symbolic as District 9 is extremely low.”?!!
Dude, have you even seen The Dark Knight? That Bat-movie was overtly symbolic regarding the fascist tactics the government has been inflicting on us in the past ten years of the “war on terror.”
Phil s you are just as whiny as that crowd. most of those people are out there to feel like they’re part of something and maybe see a celebrity or two. It’s cool to say your part of “something”. Apparently that something isn’t the workforce in this country. They need to get jobs so I can stop supporting them as a hard working member of society.
Calm down, Jay. You’re being ridiculous. Jobs, in case you haven’t heard, are extremely hard to come by right now. It’s brutal out here, part of the reason for the protests. The problem is that Wall Street CEOs are using the ideological philosophy of “limited government” and “descreased regulation” to hide the fact that they’re gaming the system and taking advantage of the middle class, trying to hide that what they’re doing is the kind of thing most reasonable people agree should be illegal. In many respects, this is sabotaging the conversation between liberals and conservatives and instead becoming the double-standard of laws for the rich vs law for the poor. If it’s class warfare, they’ve fired the first shots.
What jobs? You’re fucking clueless to what is really going on out there. You’re supporting no one but yourself. Come out of your cave and see what’s really going on. This isn’t about young kids who don’t want to work. It’s about everyone. And most of us lost our jobs and can’t get work! You think I can survive on unemployment? You think I wanted to lose my job?! You have no fucking idea.
Isn’t Batman part of the 1%? This won’t end well.
Like the people in the real-life group Patriotic Millionaires, 1%’er Bruce Wayne is rebel against the 1%’s war on the rest of us.
Lol
You guys are reading wayyyyyyyyy too much into this. IT’S BATMAN, he’s a fictional character, get over it.
Batman may be fictional, but he’s also a corporate stooge for Time/Warner.
Batman is not part of the 1%. But Bruce Wayne is!!!!!!!
It’ll be nice for NYC to make an appearance in the movie. The only thing I don’t like about the franchise is that Nolan’s Gotham is modeled on Chicago, not New York.
What a wonderful privilege, a blessing to be here . Seeing my fellow Americans take to the streets, to protest, to yell, hod up signs, and get before the news cameras.
They must feel so fortunate, while others in Syria are being raped, tortured and killed for doing the same thing. In Iran your family, friends and neighbors may just go missing.
Even in France, the bastion of freedom! You can be prosecuted for what you say…
The very system they’re protesting, gives them the freedom, place, forum and SAFETY, to do so.
