Behind-the-scenes turmoil did little to slow down The Walking Dead ratings behemoth, which opened its second season at 9 PM last night to staggering numbers:
4.8 million viewers in Adults 18-49
4.2 million viewers in Adults 25-54
7.3 million total viewers for premiere
11 million total viewers for the night
The 18-49 and 25-54 tallies broke basic cable’s previous records posted by the premiere of USA Network’s The Dead Zone in June 2002 (4.0 million in 18-49, 4.1 million in 25-54). Compared with Walking Dead‘s highly rated series premiere last year (5.2 million total viewers, 3.5 million in 18-49), the Season 2 opener was up a whopping 38% in total viewers, 36% in 18-49 and 35% in 25-54. With the 9 PM airing and the 10:30 PM and 12:30 AM encores, the Walking Dead premiere drew a total of 11 million viewers. “The Walking Dead is one of those rare television programs that reaches both a core genre fan as well as broad audiences simply looking for a great, character-based story,” said AMC president Charlie Collier. “That The Walking Dead is now the most-watched drama in the history of basic cable is staggering, just like our zombies.” UPDATE: AMC’s talk show Talking Dead got off to a solid start at midnight, following the first rerun of the Walking Dead premiere. It averaged 1.2 million total viewers, 795,000 adults 18-49 and 735,000 adults 25-54.

well not bad for a show whoo’s premire was a bit boring.
Zombies are the new vampires!
And congrats to Chris Hardwick- The Nerdist is my favorite podcast, he deserves the recognition and sucess that come from it.
Even though the characters are flat, the pacing non-existent and the undead terribly non-scary, I’ve watched every episode. I guess that makes me the zombie.
I’ll watch the next episode, too, but things really need to pick up to keep my interest. Of course, I’m sentient, so my opinion may not matter.
This really isn’t surprising, with the finale bringing in 6 million, everyone should have guessed the opening of season 2 was going to do huge numbers.
It’s like Lost, the 2nd season did something like 24 million, when you got a genre show with a hook, people will tune in because of the hype and you’re either going to get a larger audience or slowly decline.
Hard to say if this show will keep growing or not, but it doesn’t really matter, it’s going to be pretty hard for this show’s ratings to drop low enough to not be AMC’S highest rated show.
I like that we got a genre show that is such a big hit, and it’s damn solid.
I’m not a hater and I want this show to be great but it was a by the numbers (except the final scene) snoozefest. Cant see me hanging in there much longer.
I love Sarah Wayne callies who plays Lori Grimes! Playing the transformed role of female matriarch well on the show.
Hmm. Strangely I’m odd man out here. Love these genre shows but
Find WD very uneven. My biggest
Complaint is that unlike BSG, Buffy, or lost – the characters here are just very flat. Not the actors, the characters. Who are they really? Aside from
An affair, nothing really
Interesting has been revealed about any of them.
The masess will almost always reward quality. A show doesn’t have to be ground breaking or totally original in order to grab eyeballs. Write well, produce well, direct well, act well, and the rewards will surely follow.
Oh please, Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire are period pieces, with as much substance as any other show on Broadcast. Jeez, just because critics love that formulaic shtick does not mean anything. But of course that won’t prevent myriads of crackheads jerking of while declaring their love for these shows.
Like Heroes, too much hype!!
I only watched The Walking Dead so I would know what was going on during The Talking Dead. I hope Patton and other Zombie-loving comedians come by to nerd out with Chris often. And it probably saved me from having nightmares later!
ALRIGHT !!!!! I LOVE the Walking Dead….. I rarely watch TV however, this so is a fun indulgence.
Rather watch Walking Dead THAN go to the movies.
Watch first season of the walking dead on Netflix

Is this Susie Fitzgerald’s show?
I watched hoping the writing had improved, but it was as terrible as last season. (Someone here said the new writers’ work doesn’t start till about three episodes in; I hope I can stand it that long.)
The characterizations are non-existent and most of the cardboard cutouts people are annoying. It’s like George Lucas wrote this show.
There are SO many WTF moments where the people do or say stupid things. And how did that old guy on the roof with the binoculars miss hundreds of zombies stumbling towards them from a hundred feet away exactly? Ugh.
How is this show great? The gore is what viewers are tuning in for, because there is next to no story and the “characters” are boring and dumb.
That ending for the S2 premiere was a WTF moment. That Zombie Horde walking was tence. I never read the comic book. Any given episode a character could die.
I wish this did not come on same time as Dexter….
The season premier was fantastic, on the edge of your seat suspense! I cant wait for the season to unfold.
I LOVE ‘The Walking Dead.’
The first 25 minutes had me totally freaked out. Andrew Lincoln, who plays the lead, Rick, is major gorge: electric blue eyes, pouty lips and the sweat dripping down that handsome face.
AMC is smart to rerun the opening night episode so viewers watching ‘The Amazing Race’ or ‘The Good Wife’ still get a chance to see it.
LOVED IT, SO GLAD ITS BACK, MISSED IT!
The Walking Dead is the best and getting better with every tv show thanks to the writer and the acters keep up the good work.
