Deadline broke the news when Patty Jenkins was the surprise choice to direct Chris Hemsworth in Thor 2, and Marvel has just confirmed that her deal closed. Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron in her Oscar-winning Monster performance, also directed the pilot of the AMC series The Killing. Still, she was a surprise because superhero directing assignments most often go to men. Here is the official word:
Marvel Studios announced today that Patty Jenkins will direct THOR 2, which will be released in theatres on Friday, November 15, 2013. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman will return to star in the film along with Tom Hiddleston. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce the sequel to this summer’s blockbuster THOR, which has grossed over $448 million worldwide to date.
Patty Jenkins previously directed MONSTER starring Charlize Theron, who won an Academy Award® for her performance in the film. Jenkins, who received an Emmy nomination for directing the pilot of AMC’s acclaimed series The Killing, has also directed episodes of Entourage and Arrested Development. Most recently, she directed “Pearl,” one of the five short films that comprise Lifetime’s original movie FIVE.
In addition to THOR 2, Marvel Studios is currently scheduled to release MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012, and IRON MAN 3 which is slated for release on May 3, 2013.
Jenkins is represented by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Alan Wertheimer.

So Atom Egoyan dropped out of the running?
Well played.
There are many Thor allies and villains that weren’t included in the first film which they can utilise in future sequels and give us new stories while leaving the overused Loki out of future sequels.
Huge downgrade from Sir Ken. This one might go direct to video (or PPV).
Atom Egoyan wanted to shoot it in black & white Super 8. They also pursued Wim Wenders, Werner Herzog, and Ingmar Bergman, but they insisted on shooting it in 3-D and Marvel said no.
About fucking time a woman director gets a shot at one of these stupid movies.
Wooot! Go Chris Go Tom!!!! Best comic reinvention yet!!
Loved her film, was doubly impressed with what she did with the pilot of The Killing – she really knows how to get epic scale and atmosphere on a budget. This choice bodes well for the film; hope the script gives her something great to bring to life.
Nothing against Patty Jenkins, but why did they not ask Kenneth Brannagh to direct the sequel?
I think he said no. (Or at least Marvel is saying he said no.) The first one was too grueling as far as post-production goes. Also, he probably costs more.
I am convinced she can do anything; from Monster to Entourage. Heard her speak at an AFI dinner and she has a deep understanding of film and a very practical approach. I think it’s a smart move.
Kenneth had ZERO interest in coming back. Patty is a very interesting choice who can actually direct actors, even if everything on the sound stage is green.
Where’s the hate for this woman coming from? A “huge downgrade” from Ken Branaugh? An Atom Egoyan joke, for God’s sake? All Jenkins has ever done is good directing. (When an actor gets a lead role Oscar, some credit has to go to the person who shaped that performance, both on the set and in the editing room.) And frankly, hasn’t Marvel proven that they know how to creatively guide a superhero movie? (They NEVER would have made “Green Lantern.”) Before the flack comments come in, I have no connection to either Marvel or Jenkins (I met her once, for a few minutes, during the making of MONSTER). Give them both the benefit of the doubt.
There’s nothing funny about Atom Egoyan, Koloff.
Since I jumped in with a nod of approval for the Atom Egoyan reference above, I want to say the comment was snark –but really good snark.
But beyond snark, Jenkins does great work, it’s probably an inspired choice, and I can’t wait to see what comes of it.
It IS about fucking time a woman director got a shot at one of these movies. This news makes me really, really excited for THOR 2.
Preach. It’ll be nice to have a few quality performancesbin a superhero film. She’s a little arty but that will be a virtue; dont forget a woman made American Psycho and it had more balls than most mainstream films out there…
Congrats to Patty Jenkins. It is about damn time a woman gets the chance to helm such a big budget, comic book extravaganza. A talented woman at that. The movies Ms. Jenkins has put her fingerprints on to this point have been nothing short of fabulous, and her directing chops exude a measured erudition and nuanced understanding of how drama plays on the screen. Plus, she’s wicked smart. If anything, she will bring depth and thoughtfulness to the shallow pond that was “THOR” I.
So I lightly doff my hat to her success!
From Monster to Thor 2 big leap in movie making. Most important is where the movie is being made…USA OR off shore due to so called cost. I wish her well.
raxoredge
This movie is going to be an abject failure. The idea of letting a woman helm a superhero picture is pretty ridiculous (this has been tried before, with Lexi Alexander directing Punisher: War Zone, and we all saw how that turned out), but then I thought “Well, there is one woman out there could direct a movie like this, and it’s Kathyrn Bigelow.” And what does Marvel do? Not only do they not get Kathyrn Bigelow, they instead get the woman who directed Monster? Are you kidding me? Get ready for the Thor franchise to take a nosedive people, because heeere comes Patty Jenkins.
I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest the logic in your post is unreliable.
This is my favorite quote “superhero movies often go to men.” Um, EVERY FEATURE MOVIE often goes to men to direct. All you need are two eye-balls and the ability to read a one-sheet.
@blistering: it might be punisher:war zone all over again? we will see.
I dont know if those are all her people commenting above. But I think this is a bad choice. I mean, dude, she directed Monster?
And its not as if Thor is going to be a movie big on substance. It’s an action movie for crap’s sake. Get an action nerd to do this.
Hey “welles”
What have you ever directed besides the pulling of your own pud ?
Who the fuck are all of you losers ?
This woman is talented.
Go back to waiting tables.
