Starz recently released the first trailer for its upcoming period drama Magic City, set in 1959 Miami. It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan as a hotelier and family man with ties to the mob. Co-starring are Olga Kurylenko as his wife and Danny Huston as a mob boss. The series premieres in the spring.

I don’t like a lot of period shows and movies, especially those set circa late 1800′s to the 1960′s. Often times, the shows spend more time trying to portray the era than trying to execute a good story. Who cares if the characters don’t act like how we believe they used to in those days? Put them on screen and write a good story. Don’t go overboard on the cursing like Deadwood did, and don’t make the show boring like Mad Men does. Make it like how Spielberg made Saving Private Ryan. Make the characters human beings, not stereotypical and boring.
sorry roger, you lost me at bashing Deadwood and Madmen.
People need to pick a new decade to set period tv shows.
Mad Men isn’t boring.
One part Mad Men, two parts Boardwalk Empire?
Any point that is illustrated by holding up Deadwood and Mad Men as examples of how NOT to do television is a pretty dumb point.
Wow, bitter aren’t we?
I’m entitled to my opinion, aren’t I? I’m not the only one that thinks they are awful shows.
You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, Roger. But it’s worth noting that the vast majority of TV critics and erudite TV aficionados consider Mad Men & Deadwood to be two of the five or ten greatest TV dramas ever made. So arguing your opinion from the starting place of considering Mad Men and Deadwood to be “terrible shows” is not likely to be very persuasive to the majority of TV viewers.
Read 5 of 8 episodes so far. They are fantastic! This show has more in common with the Godfather movies or TV as if directed by Scorsese, but hotter than Boardwalk. The writing and characters are sublime, in fact the scripts for this show are so great they had every agent and manager in Hollywood in a frenzy trying to get their clients in to be a part of the Magic City… also never underestimate Chris Albrecht’s (Soprano’s, Sex in The City, etc.) programming genius… he adopted the goofy STARZ programming when he went there from HBO – now he’s starting (with Boss and Magic City) to build HIS slate. I’d stay tuned…
Glad to see Olga getting some TV work stateside. Damn, that girl is hot. AND she can act… not that it matters when you look that good.
I liked Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Supernatural and Olga Kurylenko is my favorite Bond girl. The trailer looks great; this appears to be a high quality production that can actually compete with Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men* if the acting, writing, and directing are on that same level. I like that Starz is heading in a more dramatic direction. I hear Camelot was laughable and Torchwood was very inconsistent. The only series that seems to be a success for Starz is Spartacus, but no telling how it’ll fare considering the replacement actors for season 2.
*I definitely agree that Mad Men is boring, though I’d say it improved in season 2. As for Deadwood, while I really liked that show, it was for the colorful characters and top-notch acting; it’s a very slow paced show where a lot of time is spent seeing characters stare at each other or fight over b.s. misunderstandings.
this looks great – mad men with sex and violence!
100 points if they work in Marco Rubio’s parents “fleeing Castro.”
Its actually being filmed on location in Miami, a nice touch,
I love the trailer!
Very Godfather-esque. IMDB lists cinematographer Gabriel Beristain, so I’m hooked.
It looks like he’s got that cool sexiness of the era down pat (not that Olga needs any help).
This show is gonna sizzle.
Finally, a show that dares to be different. No one is doing sex, drinking, glitz & mob violence. We would have NO idea what that looks like were it not for “Magic City.” Points for really thinking outside the box on this one!
The shows look is mesmerizing and sexy, like a feature, not TV. Feels like The Godfather meets Twin Peaks. This may cure my Sopranos withdraw and leave me with an even worse habit. I’m hooked on one minute?
Thank you for the show. Magic City is HOT! I love it, wow! I was so bored with Television.
Now Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Magic City have restored my interest. Keep up the good works. Loving every second. Especially Mr. Morgan. Yes, yes…..yes, oh excuse me, I got lost in…. thought. ; )
This new series Magic City is good BUT the lighting is so so dark I stopped watching it after the third episode
