EXCLUSIVE: At Universal Pictures, there is so far no movement on another Bridesmaids, but the studio is moving to the altar on another wedding-themed comedy sequel. Universal has set Malcolm D. Lee to write, direct and produce Best Man 2, a sequel to the 1999 film. Lee wrote and directed the original, a comedy in which a writer (Taye Diggs) is preparing to be the best man for his football player buddy (Morris Chestnut), but the timing is bad because the writer’s autobiographical novel is about to pop and it describes how the best man bedded the bride. Terrence Howard, Harold Perrineau, Nia Long and Sanaa Lathan also starred. The original grossed $35 million. Lee’s plan is to ask the original cast to reprise; in fact, I’m told the whole idea came out of a reunion dinner he held with most of the cast members, and they sparked to the idea of a re-team and so did the studio. CAA reps Lee.

Great news! This is Andy and Donna’s first announcement since they were re-upped? Looking forward to more awesome Universal movies in the future. Ya right.
Yes please to this and less Tyler Perry. I enjoyed the first one immensely.
Less Tyler Perry? WOW! Way to be supportive of our Black Producers/Directors!!!! Tyler Perry is phenomenal and he almost single handedly change Hollywood’s mind about blacks on the big screen, because of his undying efforts Blacks in Hollywood are finally getting the recognition they deserve. :0)
While I do enjoy Tyler Perry’s efforts to bring black actors to the screen, I dislike how they are betrayed as bumbling idiots (to be frank) most of the time.
Also I would like to point out (as an African-Amercian) that there are various degrees to being black and most of the time this is portrayed in most films.
MzNeicy, take a step back. Everyone does not have to love Tyler Perry’s work. If you do, good for you. He did not change Hollywood’s mind about African-Americans on the big screen. He changed their minds about getting butts in the seats. Previous misconception: African-Americans don’t pay to see theatrical releases. Studios care about the bottom line – money. He proved that he could gain a substantial audience and bring in high box office sales. HOWEVER, on “phenomenal” the verdict is still out – much like Dr. Conrad Murray. While you are singing his praises, you should do research on why the WGA picketed during the opening of his studio in Atlanta… I digress. This is a celebration of Malcolm D. Lee, and access that he now has to tell a story we have been waiting to see for far too long. I welcome and warmly embrace a story that is neither written nor directed by T.P.
Well stated and I agree with your comment 100%
I don’t understand….How are going to sit there and down one brother and uplift another, they are both black and making money in Hollywood.Second,it’s been over ten years since the first movie so what is the story line going to be like? At lease T. Perry is current on the movies he makes.Weather or not i like their work….they are BOTH making a difference.
Have to agree on less Perry. Not sure about this one though.
Thank you, Universal for the GREENLIGHT! Lots of faith in Malcolm Lee’s writing and directing abilities. So happy for everyone involved!
Ill take this over Tyler Perry crap any day. That said, the first one didn’t make that much at the box office. I’m surprised Universal would go with another one.
First film grossed $35mm so of course, let’s make a sequel….hope they aren’t planning on budget of more than $5mm.
Can’t believe this is something they’re going for…
Why not “producer?” Do you have any idea how much that movie made in DVD sales? Or licensing? Do you have any idea what types of movies Af-Am audiences are STARVED for? Obviously not.
Agreed @Starving; well said. This is a classic movie in Af-Am community. My friends and I will be lined up for sure to see it.
I love the original. I’ve seen it over 10 times.
Very curious of what the sequel will portray… Jordan finally getting “her” man?
Hollywood is making a movie about middle class black people that deals with universal themes audiences of all races can appreciate? What’s the world coming to?
This is great! I love The Best Man. Quality writing and a great cast. No more Tyler Perry films!!!
Wow interesting news. I remember the original well. Wondering what the plot will be? I guess we can thank Tyler Perry making dough hand over fist for this being greenlit.
Tyler Perry wishes he had this type of quality movie in his repertoire
Whether it speaks to CAA’s clout or the fulfillment of some ancient Mayan prophesy, I can’t hate the fact that a quality film, with quality talent that happens to be about middle class black people is even talked about being made in Hollywood. More please.
A bit of a strange move but none the less I agree with the above statement.
I am so excited about this! I’m interested in what the sequel will show. I wonder if Mia will have an affair with Jackson. Or will he finally marry the Sanaa Lathan character. So, much juicy stuff!
A sequel to “Undercover Brother” would be most welcome afterward.
I’m soo excited! ! I hope they retain the same cast… I loved the first one
Now, this is exciting. I gotta dust off the original. What happened to the LOVE JONES sequel? Bring Nia and Larenz back together!
AMEN!!!!!! I love Love Jones!!!!
One of my fave movies….. Loved the Terrence Howard character……
Also loving the idea of the LOVE JONES sequel…………….
What a bad idea. The first one was only so-so.
This is Great news!!!! Love this movie.
I was just thinking about how there should’ve been a sequeal to this movie. I think instead of having it be Taye Diggs wedding. I think that it should be Terrance Howards Wedding to Shelby and how he is having issues giving up his player card and Shelby with her control issues. I I think that maybe Murch should be the best man.
The first one was very good ive seen it at 50 times no lie, it was a great african american movie, please make 2 better and interesting a few of my favorite actress and actors were in it and please make it the same cast Good luck and God bless
EXCEPTIONAL! I’m glad to hear this. I hope the studio markets this more broadly than the first release. The universal themes of love, marriage and friendship can touch the entire movie going public. The first film was smart, well produced, well acted, well written and well directed.
Im looking forward to..THE BEST MAN 2..love the first one I think it would do good at the box office, and if the same cast stars in the movie,it will be a hit…
Really happy to hear about this sequel!! I lived the original flick! The Tyler Perry joints are growing so old, tired and predictable. I applaud Universal for making this move.
Simple.people shut up..tyler perry sends out a message in his movies and plays…its not just something to watch
Yes, Tyler’s message is: moms are bad, dark-skinned men are bad, and all women no matter what class or education level should settle down with a blue collar pretty boy.
Definitely nuggets of wisdom!
Oh this exciting good news. I can’t wait so see the movie!! Hurry! Hurry! Always wanted to know how the friendships, the marriage and other relationships turn out!! I loved The Best Man and I’m sure Best Man 2 will be just great!!
Although it only grossed $35 million, we’re talking $35 million in 1999 not today. If that movie came out today and did the same numbers it would probably equal to $50 million. Plus you don’t know how much they made off of it once it was released to VHS & DVD. Some movies do better once they’re released on video. I am glad they gave it the green light because I thoroughly enjoyed the first one and I’m getting tired of Tyler Perry’s movies being the only black written & produced movies you see out these days. I’m not hating on Mr. Perry because I enjoy his work too, but he isn’t the only black person making movies and it’s about time that be reflected at the box office.
