EXCLUSIVE: To anyone with an interest in those Enigma codebreakers who helped win WWII and the math geniuses whose work led to the creation of the earliest computers, then the name Alan Turing holds quite a lot of fascination. This British historical figure most prominent from 1940 through 1955 is also the subject of a big spec script sale today. First-time screenwriter Graham Moore’s The Imitation Game was snapped up by Warner Bros in a 7-figure deal. I’ve learned that the studio outbid half a dozen indie companies because Leonardo DiCaprio ”has the inside track” to play the lead and was chasing the project. But so far no talent is attached. I hear Ron Howard is interested in directing.
First-time producers Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky owned the rights to Andrew Hodges’ definitive biography Alan Turing: The Enigma and worked with Moore for more than a year to get the script just right. Moore is also a first-time novelist and his crime fiction debut The Sherlockian, filled with Conan Doyle lore, received a rave review in The New York Times by Janet Maslin. People I trust tell me The Imitation Game is the best script they’ve read in years — and they read a lot of scripts. The life story of this English mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, computer scientist, criminally prosecuted homosexual, and tortured soul who committed suicide by eating a cyanide-laced apple has it all. (Reportedly, Steve Jobs named his company “Apple” as a tribute to Turing.) “Think The King’s Speech without the huge uplifting ending,” a source tells me. I’m told that CAA agent J.P. Evans, Safran manager Tom Drumm, and Jackoway Tyerman lawyer Alan Wertheimer made today’s sale happen.

No mention of the play Breaking The Code, starring Derek Jacobi as Turing on Broadway. Much acclaimed some years back.
Been fascinated by the ENIGMA codebreaking project (books/movies) and Turing for a long time. They can give us an uplifting ending after the torture/death with the right end crawl that details the post death triumphs of Turing’s genius.
Outbid everyone else because a radioactive star is interested in a topic that is dull to everyone but geeks; must have been the gay that got his attention. If they find someone else to play the lead, I might go see it; not likely. That’s from someone who not only knows who Turing is, but understands what he did, and how.
@David Who is “we” that you speak of? “The Turing Test” does not measure the “self-awareness” of machines. Machines have no self-awareness, neither do animals for that matter. It is a test to show “intelligent behavior.”
Just because Leonardo DiCaprio name is mentioned in this article, why do you presume he is attached or signed into this project? He doesn’t do many films, once a year or every 2 years. It seems his name gets tossed all over the place without merit. That’s media for you.
Great stuff for first timers Moore and Grossman and Ostrowsky. Guess it goes to show being on the supposed A list of whatever doesn’t mean smack compared to hard work, talent and the legendary hustle. Sure, it helps that Leo and Ron are circling…but why didn’t any of the A listers ever go for this book before now.
This sounds fantastic, and I love LDC, but please, not Ron Howard (even though I know he’s the nicest guy in the world.) His stuff is always a little too soft (with the exception of “Ransom”) and he always seems to want to make things a bit syrupy. I see the connection with “A Beautiful Mind” but I think that could have been a lot meatier with a different director.
Congratulations to the whole team! Nora’s one of the those young producers who I know we will be hearing from a lot; super driven and has a keen eye for what works. Looking forward to seeing what she and Ido come out with next!
If Ron Howard directs, does that mean his frequent collaborator Akiva Goldsman will give the script a little “polish”?
These are some of the better comments I’ve read in a while…
All the agency coverage of this script was TERRIBLE! Plus, there is supposedly a British film about Turing in the works that is supposed to be much stronger.. Just FYI..
Ooohh…. like agency coverage is worth a damn. It’s a bunch of aspiring screenwriters supplementing their income. It’s someone’s opinion and like you know what, we all have one.
Haven’t you heard the “no one knows anything” quote?
If Leo, JP Evans, Chris Sablan, Ron Howard respond to something, if anyone with an actual job in Hollywood responds to something then there you have it — you can pass GO and round and round on the monopoly board until you have a movie made.
“Oooh agency coverage was bad” like you actually think you have hand to play with that when Nora and her bestie, this Ido character have Leo, CAA, Warner Bros and Imagine in their stack?
has been really cool watching dicaprio’s career…turing has an amazing story and this sounds awesome
Breaking News: Leonardo DiCaprio is now attacked to every single project in Hollywood.
I covered the script. It’s a PASS. Sorry.
Good for the writer and production team. I have not read yet, but sounds interesting.
HOWEVER…
Leo will fuck it up. He should quit doing biographies of famous people from the past 100 years and, I dunno, play an original character. Oh wait, he can’t. He’s a terrible actor (AND YOU ALL KNOW IT TO BE TRUE!).
It’s funny how all these HUGE directors all make their worst movies with him: Scorsese (AVIATOR or SHITTER ISLAND), Nolan (INCEPTION), and coming soon: Clint Eastwood.
Ron Howard hasn’t made a really good movie in a long time, and this potential new association means that he won’t.
***and for all you Leo lovers out there, you can call me a ‘jealous hater’ all you like, doesn’t make what I’m saying any less true.***
Didn’t Ron Howard ruin A Beautiful Mind? Yeah, it won awards but side-stepped the gay angle, rejection of son, and all the nasty stuff, etc. Go with another director. Get Scorcese to do it.
the bbc/masterpiece theater production Breaking the Code was a really good tv version of this same story. will be interesting to see how it becomes more cinematic in this latest iteration.
Turing was a great man and definitely deserves a biopic as it’s his centenery next year. I hope DiCaprio can pull it off. I’ll also shamelessly mention The Turing Enigma (theturingenigma.com) which I edited. It isn’t a biopic (its mostly set in present day) but does have a few flashback scenes of Turing’s later years snuck in there and Ian Pink who played Turing is excellent in it.
While the script and source material are welcome changes from typical fare, it seems redundant to put Leo in almost every big budget biopic or character-driven novel. From THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK, to THE AVIATOR, to CATCH ME IF YOU CAN, to J. EDGAR, and THE GREAT GATSBY, people are tiring of seeing him play everyone (real or fictional).
Leo, go on vacation for while, ok?
Great to see the story finally make it to screen; however, Turing’s life and work were well-documented in the 1986 theatre production of “Breaking the Code,” starring Derek Jacobi, and was based on the book by Alan Hodges. It was subsequently made into a movie, adapted by Hugh Whitemore. Hollywood beckoned… but they wanted Turing’s homosexuality cut, and thus the games begin.
So, I am cheering and applauding this project, which, in actuality, has been in some form of development or another since 1987. About time.
Although I probably am not as fired up about it as you, I agree that Leo is overrated. He acted in Gilbert Grape, BB Diaries, the gay poet one, and Aviator. The rest of his movies, in my humble opinion, have featured merely the expressions of his cute but aging boyface.
IMITATION GAME is a terrible title for a movie. I figured it was either a body-switching project or a clone project. There’s no common reference to draw on, either… Just a bad choice.
Best script I’ve read in a long time, and Graham’s a great guy to boot. Congrats to the team!!
Sad to see Turing wont be played by an Englishman. DI Caprio always seems ot be chasing BIG roles to get the oscar.
Benedict Cumberbatch would be perfect to play Turing.
I’m sorry……I don’t recall reading anyone’s claim that DiCaprio can “play anything.”
Why do some find it necessary to denigrate an artist’s talent, or attempt to discount their ability or popularity? I believe I detect jealousy and envy!
The facts are clear. DiCaprio is hard-working and gifted. He has been honored by the experts, and he is respected by his peers. His performances, to date, have entertained hundreds of millions across the planet.
Even the very best have limitations……including De Niro, Brando, and Streep!
