EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has set Drew Pearce to write Sherlock Holmes 3, continuing the Guy Ritchie-directed series that stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. The deal will soon be sealed with Pearce, who is currently writing Iron Man 3, which will also star Downey.
This development comes even before the opening of the second installment of the franchise, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which bows December 16. The film focuses on the battle between Holmes, Watson, and their nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Jared Harris plays that role, and Noomi Rapace joins Rachel McAdams in the sequel. Pearce also did some writing on Pacific Rim, the big alien invasion film that Guillermo del Toro is about to begin shooting in Toronto for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pearce is repped by WME and Warren Dern.

I guess no one has told Warner Bros. that 2 is going to bomb.
Why are you so sure it will bomb?
Really? And where do you get your insight from? Do tell.
Yeah ’cause the first one really stunk up the joint, huh dipshit?
Please both Sherlock Holmes movies were awesome except there was one disappointment in the second. The woman Sherlock Holmes loves was suppose to killed by Jack the Ripper and instead they have the professor killing her by poison. Total bull I was looking forward to her mutilation. Rumor is Jack the Ripper will be in the third one and I wonder if so who are they going to replace for one of the five women he kills since she was suppose to be one.
Well, she came down with a case of tuberculoses.. which is a disease.
It doesn’t kill instantly, which leads to the idea that she may appear once again as a cameo in the second, but just as a sick women.. Then being killed by Jack the Ripper.
Just my personal idea&observations.
Except for the fact Moriarty specifically said “rare strain that kills in moments”
Sherlock Holmes isn’t meant to have any love interests. He’s clearly asexual in the original ACD stories, so having Irene Adler play the ‘hero’s lover’ really annoyed me. The films are too ‘hollywood’ for my liking.
Adler isn’t the “hero’s lover”. She’s the only one clever enough to outsmart Holmes over and over again and its because of this that he admires her. Shes a classic character! There aint no so-called “hollywood” lovin goin on. They’re both too brilliantly minded to have a soppy lovey dovey relationship. So stop tryin to sound all high and mighty just cause its a hollywood movie and you need to sy somethin against it to make you seem all deep and interesting. Accept the fact its a genius movie and get on with your life.
you are wrong. I read all the sherlock holmes stories and it doesn´t come up that he is asexual. Sherlock holmes is just a case freak. I guess you mean anti social. He isn´t interest in woman unless these bring him a new case to solve. If he would be asexual why did he got almost married ?
She isn’t dead! She’s too clever to be beat by a simple case of TB. It’d just be extremely disappointing not to mention insulting to kill off a character like her in that way!
#1: In the Valley of Fear by ACD, Sherlock Holmes actually states that Moriarty has rules with an iron fist and only gives one punishment- death.
#2: Moriarty himself said to Adler in the film that her services were no longer required, and we all have seen from the rest of his film how unlikely it is for him to leave loose ends alive. We then see him poison her by switching the tea cups.
#3: The ultimate proof, Moriarty told Holmes that she “Succumbed in seconds,” and then produced her handkerchief (the same as in the first movie) with her blood on it.
So while I’m as eager as anyone else to see Rachel McAdams reprise her role as Adler, it’s just not going to happen.
Maybe the woman they will replace her part with is the doctors wife.
Um, what? Are you just talking out of your ass?
TROLL.
I think you can take it for granted that no one told Warner Bros. that the first sequel to a major hit was going to bomb. Where did you get your intel from, the Psychic Hotline?
The first one did 524m worldwide. This one will do the same. Even if it does half the first, they are still going to make a ton of money on it. But, it will do the same or better.
Iron Man did 585m, IM2 did like 620m, so it’s not like RDJ can’t deliver on a sequel.
Go away.
Actually I saw this movie at a early preview for audiences and it was suprisingly better than the first one. I cant say much about it because I dont want to ruin it but its well paced and the story is more fun with him facing off against his nemesis from the books.
“I concur in the fullest, my dear Watson.”- great movie, completely capable of a sequel and five stars and an Oscar.
What are you talking about that movie was AWESOME!!!!
The second Sherlocke Holmes was even better than the first !!!
And the first was amazing
“…I guess no one has told Warner Bros. that 2 is going to bomb…”
$180,000,000 domestic. Nearly half a billion dollars worldwide.
You might be right….
Hahahahaha well it rocked so what now?
Did you actually see the second movie? Because i think people that did would agree that the second movie was INCREDIBLE!
so much for the 2nd movie “bombing”…what an idiot
Last I heard, Shane Black was both writing and directing ‘Iron Man 3.’ Is Pearce just doing a ‘polish’? Or did Black pull back to just directing duties? ..Or is he out altogether? (If so, isn’t that a bigger story?)

I long for the day when Robert Downey Jr.’s career becomes more than just sequels to sequels.
Yeah he should get involved with people who make interesting movies.
I don’t mind the Iron Man movies and Avengers looks interesting, but the Sherlock stuff is just too ordinary.
you are a fool sir. how can you call Sherlck Holmes ordinary? He has been around before you were a tad-sperm.
Sherlock Holmes – ordinary? Now I do understand that different people have different tastes, but that seems way off the mark. Nothing about these films is “ordinary”, just as nothing about the original stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was “ordinary”. RDJ shines as the great detective. You’re entitled to your opinion, but you might want to be careful how you phrase criticisms on a legacy such as Sherlock Holmes… I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that what came out as an insult was meant as a respectful criticism that takes into account the sheer amount of people who have been mesmerized by the tales of Sherlock Holmes.
Don’t you dare say that Sherlock Holmes is ordinary. I’ve been addicted to his story for as long as I remember and a movie like that will never ever be ordinary!!!
you do realize that Holmes was the inspiration for House and that show ran for nearly nine years, there is nothing ordinary about the intricacies of brilliant minds, their downfalls, and their detachment from the rest of us normal ordinary humans.
Wow. I’m impressed! You’ve clearly come from the future, bringing us tidings of woe for SH and its box office. Weird, I have to say, because everything points to this being a massive, massive hit – stellar tracking and awareness, excited inside word, fantastic trailer, brilliant leads….I’m fascinated by the news you bring from January 2012. Of course you could be talking witless, clueless bilge. But we’ll give you the benefit of the doubt!
Amen Peter. I heard it just tested in the 90s.
Seconded. Ritchie and crew are gold.
SH2 will be a big hit. I’m just wondering who this Drew Pearce guy is. Re-wrote Pacific Rim? AND wrote Sherlock and IM3? Huge tentpoles….
I hope they forced Downey to speak his lines clearly this time. In the first one he is unintelligible throughout the ENTIRE movie! It would’ve helped he plot to know what the hell Holmes was saying!!
You must have watched the Blu-ray. Most dialog is inaudible on those discs (but the effects go BOOM). One day the sound engineers will make better sound mixes.
Wow… turn up the Beltones, pal. I have hearing damage and I didn’t have an issue understanding him, apparently neither did the rest of the audience around me in the packed theatre judging from how sync’d up their laughter seemed to be when something humorous was said by Downey.
I’m british, and i think he would pass as a plausible brit any day! Both films are amazing!
What is that or are you one of those Americans who can’t understand anything other than a American accent? Albeit a fake one in this case.
Oh, please. Every other actor in the film is entirely understandable– all British. Downey, with his typical artistic arrogance that snubs the audience, decided to slop through his lines, just for effect. Please watch the film again and try to transcribe what the F he says– 75% is pure gibberish!!!!
Rubbish — RDJ is completely understandable in both the first and second films. Even the British say his British accent is just fine. My friends and I had no trouble understanding him. One of the most articulate actors in Hollywood, and the Sherlock movies are far from the first time he’s taken on an English accent. I’m a language professor (German and Russian) and even the line he quoted in German in Sherlock 2 was quite impeccably done.
I have transcribed the entire film. It took me one viewing. And RDJ’s lines were by far the easiest to get down.
Wow…Sherlock Holmes, and maybe soon, The Thin Man.
Why not just enjoy the originals on Turner Classics ?
Calm down. If it’s a hit, great. If it’s actually good, even better. The first just struck me as one of those movies that everyone saw, but no one really loved. For me, the sequel’s trailer has an air of “Sherlock Holmes: Full Throttle.” I’ll be shocked if this one hits $200 mil domestic. Doesn’t mean it won’t.
This erks me. First off this is nothing re motley similar to the Sherlock Holmes novels. Sherlock Holmes wasn’t a martial arts Victorian superhero. This is the new Hollywood can’t sell a script with substance we will just put high payed actors ii the movies with special effects and people will by it they buy anything. What is worst than that is Robert Downey’s horrible performance and his way,way off British accent. I look at this film as more of a comedy rather than serious film making. Jude role as Watgson is also a comical and way of the character as almost all the actors they have somehow lured on to this shipwreck. So don’t wonder why the BBC launched there Sherlock Holmes series, it was to show they didn’t give these ridiculous movies any support. Anyway watching these movies are basically supporting bad films and Rosie O’Donnel said it best when you feed someone crap and call it a meal after time they start believing it.
Yes, and anyone who quotes an artistic genius like Rosie O’Donnell is sure to be an expert on crap. That’s all that ever comes from her, and apparently you as well, since you are pretty much talking out your ass.
Sherlock Holmes was far from a horrible movie. It was pretty damn good.
martial arts? That’s what you get when the lead actor does that for exercise. Funny how that plays into the script.
Sherlock Holmes knew martial arts. It is said in a book that he combined martial arts with boxing.
True! In the original stories, Holmes is a boxer of some expertise, and in “The Final Problem,” the story in which he battles Moriarty to the death at Reichenbach Falls (yes, the second movie is based on that), it is clearly mentioned that he knows martial arts. I found the Guy Ritchie movies, up to a point, truer to the original stories than any other version I’ve seen, and I’m also a big fan of the BBC series. In terms of the characters of Holmes and Watson, their comradeship and eccentricities, Ritchie’s films are spot-on. I totally buy Holmes as a bohemian, manic, brilliant, bare-knuckle fighter as well as a genius detective. And nowhere in Doyle is Watson an old, bumbling duffer of a sidekick, as he’s usually been portrayed in the past — it makes more sense for him to be a younger, recently returned war vet who is every bit Holmes’s equal in a fight. Where Ritchie goes off into Hollywood-land is his obsession with Big Guns and What They Do in Extreme Slo-Mo. If you’re into that sort of thing, which I’m sure has to do with testosterone, great. I preferred the characters and relationship, and the confrontations between RDJ’s Holmes and the excellent Jared Harris as Moriarty.
Holy. Crap. You did not just take a shot at this adaption of SH while quoting Rosie Freakin’ O’Donnell. How laughable and silly. I’m going to guess the BBC launched their own series because it’s both part of the British heritage of literature and story, and apparently still has commercial appeal in this day and age. Also, if you were to read “The Adventure of the Empty House” you’ll find that Holmes speaks of knowing a little something about martial arts, more specifically baritsu, which is a Japanese system of fighting and wrestling. Other titles would also include knowledge of boxing and cane fighting, all of which demonstrated in Ritchie’s adaptation. If you’re going to rip on something, rip on O’Donnell for crying out loud.
Have you ever read the sherlock novels? They clearly state that sherlock has a history in being an expert trained fighter. And in what way was his fighting style “martial arts”?
I personally love the books, the series, and the movies. Additionally, I don’t listen to people that do not know the difference between “there”, “their”, and “they’re”.
Good job spelling kid, you’re doing an excellent job convincing people through your illiterate bullshit.
In your attempt to sound intelligent, you have overlooked the fact that there is no way to lower your apparent IQ quicker than to resort to vulgarity.
Actually in the books Sherlock is a martial artist and in his early years a boxer. Guy Ritchie pulled from his earlier adventures and made him less of a chauvinist to allow a love interest but in many ways this is one of the more honest depictions of the character. Most people try to stick to the “newer books” version of Holmes and forget about the earlier works in their depictions of the character.
People have these tendencies to forget the details that make characters more rounded. Remember Holmes actually learns everything about how to be a detective and leaves out basic knowledge such as “the earth revolving around the sun. Fighting definitely makes it’s way into that knowledge.
So Jack, have you seen the new BBC series? Which takes place in the present and which one takes place in the time period Sir A.C. Doyle write them in? And quoting Rosie doesn’t add to your credibility. In the books, Holmes was supposed to be proficient in a marital art (albeit a fictional one) called Baritsu. Having Downey use Wing Chun, which he actually knows, isn’t that bad of an alteration. And finally, try checking your spelling. What irks me is people who can’t spell irk. I-R-K, not “erk”. Erk means a “worthless stupid person; jerk”, which on second thought is quite appropriate for you to use.
actually sherlock was skill in many manners of self defense it was all about how he applied them, but watson was always the muscle.
you might want to reread.
Noticed that too! I thought something was wrong with the theater, but no. This looks like the same as the first: a really weak movie, but marketed very well, and a star that audiences really love in these sort of roles. With all the movies jam packed in this holiday season this is one i’ll be skipping. Bring on 3, make money, but no one will remember in 5 years.
Ok how about SH, solves the case of Jack the Ripper, and the ripper is Daniel Day-Lewis. I would buy 5 tickets to see that, if one more person rips on the SH movies, I WILL FIND YOU. These films are pure GOLD, and they will be remebered as much as any classic movie will be remembered. Day-Lewis was considered to play “Moriarty” but I can see Jack-the-Ripper all over him, especially for the third installment, and I believe The ripper appears in some SH novels, so it would be awesome.
I could not agree more. So sad that hollywood execs. Think all we need are explosions and excessive special effects. Sometimes we want to see a movie that has a plot worth following. It’s sad.
What a great idea. In fact, I think Pearce should just write EVERY movie!
The 2nd one really looks like it will be one of those typical blockbusters, generic and without any artistic spirit, it is probably also making a whole lot of money and since the success of 2 awfully stupid movies like Hangover we know that the producers and WB are depending on stupid people flocking to go see stupid movies. Its all business unfortunately, calculated on the knowledge what the masses like. Sad really!
How ignorant to say that before you’ve seen it. I had my doubts before seeing it, but found it to be marvelously entertaining and expertly crafted.
Films have different genres ma’am. And the hang-over is quite gold and original compared to the slapstick comedy films of today. And, your remark of stupid people flocking to go stupid films is also far fetched and frankly, a turn-off. I’m thinking that you probably flunked that Arts Appreciation class in college. What a bummer.
Ridiculous stunt that Hollywood is pulling now by greenlighting sequels before the movie has proven itself. Remember when a film actually had to be liked before a sequel was approved? Now it’s a marketing stunt to prop up bad movies.
remember when they greenlit Green Lantern 2 and hired a writer for it before GL1 opened at the BO? hahaha!
Who gives a fuck? Honestly after the second Pirates I was done, after the second Matrix I was done. The third films if I see them are usually out of morbid curiosity. Most sequels really aren’t good enough to warrant a third but the box office is there, I get that. I do hate to see Robert Downey Jr get bogged down in sequel after sequel now. I’m sure the money doesn’t hurt, but I wonder if he ever just gets bored.
Was Return of the Jedi or Return of the King ‘morbid curiosity?’
Jack Callahan, you clearly are not a Sherlock Holmes fan or you would have remembered that, according to conan doyle at least, Holmes is a prationer of the ancient Oriental martial art of baritsu, is a skilled boxer and as good a brawler as you can find in the British Isles. He is not a pure intellect – as much he wishes he was. He simply could not function as does if that were the case – and Conan Doyle did not write him as such.
As a Holmes fan of forty-odd years and having seen all of the Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee Holmes movies – as well as a number of even earlier films [including some of the silents] and several of the various TV series – including the underrated fifties series from the BBC, the excellent Jeremy Brett run, the odd but equally intriguing Matt Frewer telemovies and even the Roger Moore vehicle, Sherlock Holmes in New York – I can say that for all its inventiveness, Guy Pearce’s Sherlock Holmes is solidly based in material from the Conan Doyle canon, and Downey is splendid in the role.
I’m not alone in that opinion among Holmes fans, either. I know several members of The Baker Street Irregulars [a fan club so exclusive that you must know the Holmes canon better than an evangelist must know his Bible in order to become a member] – one of whom edits an ongoing series of highly regarded anthologies of Holmes pastiches – who are enthusiastically supportive of the film.
The plot even follows one of Conan Doyle’s favorite plot devices – the seemingly supernatural situation that is revealed by Holmes to be no such thing.
Also, Jude is the best movie Watson, ever – he’s smart enough to be believable as a decorated soldier and a physician, but not enough to solve crimes like his friend; he’s brave [braver than Holmes, actually] and a true friend. The only better Watsons in movies or TV are David Burke and Eward Hardwicke, who played Watson opposite Brett.
As for the accent, every UK native I know was quite happy with it and, since I’m not an expert, I’ll take their word for it.
It’s also worth knowing that Sherlock Holmes was a critical success as well as a crowd-pleaser – Rotten Tomatoes had it at 70% [audience reaction at 81%] and it scored a solid B+ from the readers at boxofficemojo.com.
So it pleased critics, the general audience and a number of Baker Street Irregulars – as well serious [but not fanatical] Holmes fans like myself. Sounds pretty much like a really good movie to me.
I just wanted to say that this response was amazing, clearly thought out, and infinitely backed by facts. I respect and appreciate this posting. Well done, sir.
Seems like more of the same ol’ thinking in Hollywood. Sequels and sequels tro reboots/reimganings. SH1 was enjoyable and the trailer for SH2 seems to promise not much new, so SH3 (in 3D maybe?) likely will follow the same formula.
Studios used to have a formula to project revenues for sequels. It was somewhere around 85% of the original, mvoing downward for additional sequels. Harry Potter and Twilight broke that mold, among other films, but let’s see how well SH2 does before p[roclaiming it a “dynasty” franchise.
i see a lot of bitching about hollywood and its sequels upon sequels upon sequels, but it is hard fact that a franchise will sell, people fall in love with the characters. How many books did J.R.R Tolkien write about middle earth? how many narnia books did C.S Lewis write? how many wheel of time books are their? have you ever heard of the Dragon Riders of Pern, or how many of those books their are? what about Dune? seems to me that the only people who complain about a continuation of a storyline are likely people who have never fallen in love with a single book, or television series spanning the decades, or anything. theyre just people who are lost because they cant actually tell whats good unless someone else does it for them.
This is all well and good, but Ritchie promised us a sequel to ROCKNROLLA, and he damn well better not renege!
This is awesome!
I cannot wait for Sherlock Holmes 4 and 5 next! Could we then maybe get a 6th one, too? Oh, and then after the 6th one, a reboot starring Shia LaBoof as Holmes and Jonah Hill as Watson where they team up with the Avengers to stop these evil wizards from attacking Hogwarts with Harry Potter!! AND THEN THE ALIENS AND PREDATORS SHOW UP TO FIGHT THE DREAM THIEVES FROM INCEPTION!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!
You sound way too sarcastic.
Jack Callahan:
It’s very well described in the novels that Holmes know how to fight.
And I’m sure that WB weeps over that BBC doesn’t give the movies any support…
I hope Colonel Sebastian Moran will be the main villain in Sherlock Holmes 3.
I look forward to seeing some of the following characters in future sequels:
Inspector Baynes, Billy, Inspector Bradstreet, Tobias Gregson, Stanley Hopkins, Shinwell Johnson, Athelney Jones, Langdale Pike, Wiggins, Enola Holmes, Raffles Holmes, Sherringford Holmes, Mary Russell
sherlock was entertaining through two acts, but i found the third act awful. movie earned so we get another. testing well, lock up talent and continue milking. all this makes sense. that having been said i hope 2 is better than 1.
Give me the BBC series of Sherlock any day. Benedict Cumberbatch is a phenomenal actor. Downry Jr is a joke.
Just because you got used to that actor playing SH, that does not mean he is the best. Downey Jr. is very good at playing SH and he won the Golden Globe Award for it. He is much better than your actor(your joke).
I’m sorry. I meant that your joke sucks.
ha ha ha good one.
