EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros has acquired the Adam Gibgot pitch The Accidental Genius for Robert Downey Jr and Susan Downey’s Team Downey to produce with Ben Silverman’s Electus. In the drama, an ordinary man awakens from a coma with astonishing intelligence, and visions of a bizarre symbol recognized only by a burnt-out prodigy. Together, the two men set out to solve a hundred-year-old mystery that could change the world. The title refers to a rare but true medical condition in which a person emerges from a physical trauma with heightened mental abilities. Gibgot will be executive producer with David Gambino. Gibgot developed several pilots with Silverman at NBC, and it was Silverman who hooked up a meeting with the writer and Susan Downey, who runs her husband’s production company that was set up at Warner Bros to develop star vehicles for Downey Jr. Gibgot most recently delivered the Oliver Stone hourlong drama pilot Darkhorse for FX. He’s repped by attorney Stewart Brookman.

Sounds like “Limitless” meets “The Da Vinci Code.” Cool!
Seems like WB is buying a lot of dramas – particularly about smart people. Not a bad sign.
Best thing Robert Downey jr. ever did in his life was to marry that wife of his. Gorgeous, gorgeous woman.
could not agree more
I second that!
Congrats Adam! Great guy and a great writer.
Sounds awful like Limitless. But glad we are heading towards better stories or stories at all.
Make up your mind. Which is it – better stories, or awful? Sounds like a great story to me. But I’m just a non-fiction guy.
Warner brothers is shaping up as the most interesting studio in town – taking risks, edgy concepts. This one sounds better than anything I’ve heard in a while.
Who reps Gibgot? Baseline has outdated info.
He was at WME until this year. Don’t know what happened, obviously it’s kind’a worked out for him!
Jeez – just googled the medical condition. Brilliant concept. Hope they don’t screw this one up
This kind of movie would never get made without a star behind it like RDJ. This is why stars get paid the big dollars – because they drive the interesting material out there and make sure cream rises.
It gets made because the people in the way are brushed aside when their power is removed from the equation.
This movie refers to an actual occurrence, in which an individual who suffers head trauma may develop autistic capabilities, e.g. calendar calculation, mental calculation, etc. It’s true, but very rare. Cable TV’s many science documentary channels have had episodes devoted to this occurrence. John V. Karavitis
holy crap, just went and watched the Discovery piece! How is it possible no one has landed on this! Very jealous of this one.
Gibgot is working with Oliver Stone in TV? And now Downey in film? Who is surrounding him with these people? Sign me up!
Sign you up with who? His attorney?
LOL
How is Ben Silverman attached to a movie with this level of talent? Isn’t he a straight up TV guy?
Yes, you are confused. Read much? The article is very clear about how Silverman got involved. it’s obviously a writer he’s worked with. Don’t be a hater.
Ben gets bad rap. Hard worker and great with talent. Obviously writers like him, too – per this article.
Downey is best actor working in Hollywood today. Most interesting, anyways
Certainly better than Leo-the-omnipresent
Since when are studios buying pitches again?
Since movie stars are backing them.
Guarantee you Susan Downey is the main force behind this. She is a class act all the way.
she is as good as it gets
This is the most random and bizarre idea I have ever heard. Read it three times. Liked it more each time.
Yes, strange, especially compared to everything else that sells. It sounds like nothing else. Except maybe Rain Man.
Didn’t this studio just buy the Alan Turing project? Two genius movies at one studio? There must be a serious brainiac in power over there. Good for them. Like this one better, personally. Sounds a bit more uplifting.
Team Downey is on a roll! High quality slate .
No doubt, Downey is the man for this project. One of the greatest actor ever.
