The West Memphis 3 will get to see in person the recut version of Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky’s documentary about them — the one that has been recut to reflect the trio’s release from jail after 18 years served for the murders of three Arkansas 8-year-olds in 1993. Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory is screening for the first time in its newest version Monday at the New York Film Festival, and Jason Baldwin, Damien Echols and Jessie Misskelley Jr will be there, the fest’s organizer the Film Society of Lincoln Center said today. The original version of the HBO Documentary Films pic screened as-is during last month’s Toronto International Film Festival as the filmmakers didn’t have time to add the fresh ending, which showed the men’s release. The trio’s original conviction — derived despite the lack of physical evidence tying the then-teenagers to the murders — became a cause celebre, and the West Memphis 3 have received moral and financial support from the likes of The Hobbit director Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder and Natalie Maines. Meanwhile, there already is a feature film in the works with Atom Egoyan directing; Devil’s Knot is set to begin shooting in the spring.
Said Berlinger in the press release announcing the NYFF news: “What a remarkable opportunity to celebrate the power of cinema by having the subjects of these films — one of whom just six weeks ago was on death row and the others locked away for the rest of their lives — on hand to meet the audience who will witness their 18-year wrongful conviction odyssey on what is sure to be a monumental occasion for everyone involved Monday evening.”

Why bother with another doinky documentary? It’s just a rehash of the makers of the website that wants more funding for the convicted child murderers. That is factual, they have been convicted of murdering 3-children and have now plead guilty to doing so. They only took the Alford so that they could talk about being innocent. We’re still waiting for that proof of innocence. I won’t hold my breath.
I agree! The book of the TRUE STORY is blood of innocents. The HBO documentry left out so many important facts and acutally there was enough evidence to convict them!
C-Reader, “waiting for proof of innocence?” Not to throw around incendiary words but fascist countries require proof of innocence. The central concept of a free country is that the government is required to provide proof of guilt. In our country, the standard of proof is ‘beyond a reasonable doubt.’ That standard is not satisfiable from your arm chair perspective. You have no way of knowing beyond a reasonable doubt that they did anything. actually no way. Not possible. On the other hand, people who believe this was a travesty of justice can in fact be confident in their opinion. Because all we need to see is evidence of reasonable doubt. There is plenty of doubt. A staggering amount of doubt, actually, in this case. It’s terrifying to be reminded that there are so many people like you and your pal jennifer who are such authoritarians that you get off on blind allegiance to the justice system in one of the poorest, most uneducated and backward counties in one of the poorest, most uneducated and backward states. Just because someone wearing a badge or a robe says they did something, it must be true, right? I mean, certainly no cop ever lied or coerced a witness, right?
and by the way, no one in hollywood or elsewhere is celebrating this horrible tragedy on any level. The only hopeful thing about this entire ordeal is that some individuals (the filmmakers) believed in something and used their talent and unbelievable persistence to bring their beliefs to the public eye. thank god we live in a country where peaceful, diligent protest and freedom of speech can still act as the counter-measure to the abuse of government authority. Just like they were designed to do. Obviously, you and Jennifer would prefer to live in a totalitarian state where the filmmakers would have been locked up in the same sell as the wrongly accused. China’s probably beyond that. Iran might still work for you.

you decided they were guilty without seeing any of the files, take a breath and think about this the prosecutor MUST prove beyond a reasonable doubt a person is guilty. They do not have to prove their innocence because they’re can’t be any proof of that a bit like when you say you believe in GOd, you can’t prove it. And there is right now enough evidence the step dad and his friend may have have had something to do with the murders. Anyone who just wants people to stay where they are despite the truth needs to be examined. They plead guilty to a lesser charge because that was their only way out, one was waitigf on death row. It is always better to have a 100 guilty out than one innocent kilked. The US is waging war right now on those principles. Maybe you should remember that and maybe pray that never the police arrest you and you are found guilty despite your cry for innocence. Because you wouldn’t be in a position whete you could then mouth off…

How did they “suffer” because of “assholes like us?” A jury convicted them, and quite rightly. Read the transcripts. It’s all there.
They are innocent. You nor do anybody else have all the facts. The truth will come out soon. Those boys will be proven innocent. No 16,17,18 year old boys would be able to come up with a murder so organized and clean. CANNOT WAIT FOR THEIR INNOCENCE TO BE PROVEN!
