All the while that producer Marc Fiore was making pricey pay-or-play deals and holding press conferences in New York and Cannes to trumpet John Travolta, Al Pacino, Lindsay Lohan and Joe Pesci taking part in Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father, there were big questions on whether Fiore really had the cash to make the movie. It has become clear in the last two weeks that he does not; I’m told that the film is in play and that without a new backer, the mob movie could sleep with the fishes. Conversations are going on right now to figure out new funding and to bring down the budget.
What happened? I’m told that Fiore’s major backer, a New York-based construction mogul named Fay Devlin, recently began questioning what he had gotten himself into after Fiore paid high prices to sign talent to pay-or-play deals. Already more than $10 million has been spent, and I’ve heard they’re on the hook to pay Travolta $10 million to play John Gotti Sr, Pacino $7 million, co-writer/director Barry Levinson more than $4 million, co-writer James Toback $1 million, and Ben Foster low seven figures to play Gotti Jr. Those are high prices for an indie film. A pay-or-play deal from an indie company isn’t the same as one at a studio, but talent and reps had no reason to be unduly concerned because Fiore made escrow payments on time and was so confident his backers would write the check that foreign sales agents at Summit didn’t pre-sell overseas territories after Levinson went to Cannes to hawk the film. Things went awry only recently when timed payments to several of the stars didn’t materialize. An expected early 2012 start date now seems unlikely.
Here’s the irony: Despite the exit of original director Nick Cassavetes a week after an ill-advised press conference, and despite a lawsuit by Pesci, I’m told by reliable sources the script that was completely overhauled by Levinson and Toback is now quite good; there is now a compelling father-and-son story set in the backdrop of an iconic organized crime family in New York. New backers would probably ask the talent to rework deals, but from Levinson on down, they all really want to make the film. Whether Fiore is still calling the shots in a reconfigured Gotti film remains to be seen. A spokesman declined comment on the funding but said the film is still on track to be released in late 2012, and he also said that Fiore Films is anticipating the structure of the film will stay intact. I don’t believe that is the case at this moment.

“…John Travolta, Al Pacino, Lindsay Lohan and Joe Pesci…”
My God. When that isn’t a typo, you truly must know that we have reached the end of days…
What…you don’t want to see some Pesci on Lohan action?
This is a shock! A shock I tell you!
Anyone who would give Levinson a $4 million budget, let alone a $4 million fee should have their head examined.
This project was so full of promise and I am so disappointed. ‘Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father’ was going to be a grand success – critically and commercially as well as a heavy awards contender. I was looking forward to seeing the stellar cast comprised of John Travolta, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Lindsay Lohan, Kelly Preston, Ben Foster and Chazz Palminteri together on screen with possibly more famous gangster film genre actors.
You must be Fiore or Honig because you have posted the same exact comment under different names on about 10 different sites. Give it a break already.
They announced a movie before they got the money? What a bunch of self-promoting idiots!
Including, of note, co-producer “Stuttering” John Melendez, formerly of the Howard Stern show, now a Jay Leno writer (stolen from Stern to be the announcer).
Jesus! is any one really surprised? Levinsin sold out a long time ago… Martin Scorcese he’s not. Find a great quality HBO project and get it made. Another “Boardwalk Empire”… they’ve just made a fool of him and he allowed it.. Sad.
Howard Stern called this the moment it was announced, based solely on the fact that “Stuttering” John Melendez was involved.
This really has seemed like a freak show since day one. The problem is, unless the movie is some kind of awards-y revelation, who out there really wants to see a movie about John Gotti? It just doesn’t feel like it’s got much audience appeal.
Is this sarcasm, bounder? Americans have always loved a good mob movie or property, from Cagney movies to the “Godfather” films to “The Sopranos” and on and on. A quality film about John Gotti — the mob boss who flaunted being a mob boss to the media — and his relationship with his son would have great potential for success, especially if made at the right budget.
Maybe Stuttering John can raise money by charging Wack Packers money in exchange for appearances in the movie.
That crappy behavior seemed to work out well for him the past.
Ben Foster as Junior Gotti?!? That there’s some awful casting.
I’ve seen the script. “Quite good?” Not particularly. But definitely good enough for straight-to-video, which is the best this package could have hoped for.
Congratulations to everyone, Levinson, Travolta, Lohan, Pacino and Toback included, who managed to walk away from this with a fat paycheck…
Yikes! They may need to go to the mob just to pay off the pay or plays. Art imitates life once again.
I hope this movie will get made. It will be interesting to see from the true perspective of the mob guys themselves rather than people guessing….I’ve also observed that since losing the case against Gotti jr…..two months ago ” strange incidents ” have happened to the cast members….the FBI / NYPD do not want this film made, so they attacked the cast in a very subtle way…..I hope the producers move forward with this and not let the bastards intimidate them from telling their story…..Also, there have been quite a bit of ” shooting scenes ” taking place in CA where people just open fire and kill innocent people…..All southern LA should be on guard, because I suspect it is the NY FBI / NYPD ordering these hits done in LA as a way to intimidate Hollywood into submitting to them and follow along with their orders…..as I said in my other email, government entity is the embodiment of Satan / corruption…..and must be destroyed! These killers ordered the hits recently to have people open fire on people in LA! I know it for a FACT! So southern LA businesses should hire security guards standing out front of each business and check every person’s bag before they’re allowed to enter…..I am protecting your safety here….so spread the word! The NY FBI also had some old lady hit Reese Whitherspoon when she was running before…..so everyone should be careful, we have given them legal permission to carry guns and kill us and now they’re doing just that! They want people to believe they’re the good guys, when in fact they’re crooks and criminals in uniforms and destroyed our country down to nothing! don’t be fooled by their title….they’re no different than the mob themselves….LA should all be on guard now for your safety…..and I hope to see this movie next year! Courage and move it forward! God bless everyone:)
Yikes! You really should double up on the tinfoil for your hat.
jimjonze, thank you for the best laugh I’ve had in awhile!
Screw Gotti. Who care about this low rent low life’s story. People he hurt are still walking around with the scars he paid for. Do not glorify this scum of the earth.
777, read back your comment with dispassionate eyes and tell me it doesn’t sound like the ravings of a madman.
The kid who plays Al Capone in Boardwalk as Junior.
Freedom of the Press – i have no doubt the movie will be a blockbuster, “Rome wasn”t built in a day”. I’ve been following the production of this movie and hearing great things about the progress iin retaining the right crew! I have no doubt the movie will be a blockbuster – name a mob movie that wasn’t!
FROM UNQUESTIONABLE PROOF: The wire transfer of the funds is locked down in favor of Fiore from Carpanzano’s Group for more then 3 weeks. Carpanzano will not cut it loose unless the Fiore Devlin camp gets on the same page. Devlin, who wants to take the entire film, has been involved with his bank to have the funds received and has not done right by Fiore. Carpanzano is very concerned and has been mounting expenses of unpaid interest with 200 Million plus sitting in limbo on U.S. shores. In an interview in Istanbul Turkey with a local news program, Carpanzano stated, “If anyone can get this or any other equal project off the ground the cash is there for them.” It seems the Irish Mobster (Devlin) was trying to take the Italian Mobster (Fiore) for a ride and bury the Jewish Group (Carpanzano & Company) and run away with the film. Not going to happen Fay.
If Stuttering John is involved it is sure to fail.
Once they hired Lohan and dumped Pesci it was clearly going downhill fast.
Movie should be a major financial sucess with cult following. Gotti was the last of the “great dons”. Now they are nameless scum rather than the lowlifes we used to imortalize!
Useful information. Fortunate me I discovered your website by chance, and I am shocked why this coincidence didn’t came about earlier! I bookmarked it.
i like john gotti jr. More power to you! I cant waite to watch the movie. Good luck! God bless us all?
