Shooting on the latest James Bond movie starts Monday, Daniel Craig revealed at this morning’s press conference for Skyfall, the 23rd 007 movie. Producer Michael G Wilson scotched UK tabloid rumors that the budget for the latest Bond film has been slashed by $100 million. “We’re in the same budget range as the last film. We haven’t had to change anything in the script. In fact, we keep adding things — everything is going to be just as it was,” he said. Director Sam Mendes also denied he was making a downbeat Bond with fewer action sequences. He would be directing action sequences himself. “There will be plenty of surprises,” Mendes promised. “The action needs to be balanced with the drama.” Mendes said he was open to directing another Bond installment, “if I still feel that it’s as much fun in six months’ time, then the answer is yes.”
The filmmakers were giving little away at this morning’s presser: In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her; MI6 comes under attack, and Bond must track down and destroy the threat. While confirming Deadline’s scoop that Javier Bardem would play the villain, Mendes was coy as to whether Bardem would be playing Blofeld, as screenwriter John Logan has hinted. What is known is that Skyfall will be mostly shot around Whitehall, London (the government district), Scotland, Istanbul and China. Eon Productions used this morning’s event to unveil latest Bond girl Bérénice Marlohe, playing a character named Severine. Other cast members confirmed include Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris, playing a secret agent named Eve. Sony will release Skyfall in North America on November 9 2012, following its UK/Ireland premiere on October 26.
Mendes said he wanted to do Bond because he’d been a fan since going to see Live And Let Die in the cinema. “Plus I thought that Daniel playing Bond opened up all sorts of fantastic opportunities for the character,” he said. Broccoli would not comment on speculation that Brit pop star Adele will sing the theme song: “We’ve been considering various people for the theme tune,” she said. Mendes added that Skyfall was not a continuation of the previous two Bond outings, which had a running storyline. Producer Barbara Broccoli also revealed that Craig would be playing Bond for at least one more time. Personally, I can’t help but feel Skyfall is a lame title for a James Bond movie; even Everything Or Nothing, a James Bond video game title, would be better.

Cannot wait for Bond’s return!
230M? Why does it cost that much? Will def lose money – they should be able to easily make this for 80-100mm
Quantum Of Solace:
Budget $200 million
Box office $586,090,727
But will it be better than the Quantum of Boredom…….?
Will they do more Casino Royal card playing “action scenes”…?
Will I not care and turn it on the movie channel in 6 months as background noise while I read the paper?
Generally speaking Fiennes and Bardem (or their reps?) have very good taste in scripts and avoid being in pointless garbage even when it’s just a payday like this one.
When did a Bond film become “just a payday?”
2 words: Pierce Brosnan
You obviously didn’t see Biutiful or Maid in Manhattan.
I never thought they’d come up with a worse title than Quantum of Solace. Looks like I was wrong!
You do know that Quantum of Solace was an actual title of a James Bond short story that Fleming wrote for Playboy magazine, right?

$230 million? Wow.
I’ve been watching a lot of Swedish crime thrillers lately. Great stories, great acting, beautifully shot and edited. And I doubt they cost even a tenth of this budget, yet they still manage to be extremely compelling movies.
Hollywood budgets are out of control. And think about what this money is going toward. Entertaining a bunch of bored teenagers.
Although it’s not as bad as “Quantum of Solace”, they couldn’t come up with a better title than “Skyfall”?
That’s so boring and so un-Bond-like.
Hopefully they’ll reconsider before it’s released.
You sure about that? “Maid in Manhattan”? Just sayin’…
i hope in this one he kills some bad guys and has sex with a super-hot woman or two, maybe three
Hey, spoiler warning next time, please.
Thats a pretty quick turnaround for a film of that scope. Light on locations, light on special effects, hopefully not light on action even though they deny thats the case.
I can’t remember exact dates for previous Bonds, but they always produce them in this kind of timescale, somehow. I think “light on CGI” is probably the key.
Actually, they’re starting three months earlier than usual.
Par for the course for a Bond film. They’re given a release date by Sony and then they have to deliver. Figure 3-6 months of shooting and the rest is post-production and VFX. I wonder how many units they’ll have shooting simultaneously?
I like the tittle, it’s actually cool sounding.
I’m a little surprised that the budget is so high, but they’ll offset a huge chunk of that with product placement.
Adele for the soundtrack is a decent choice though she doesn’t have enough angst. I would rather a Gaga. There isn’t a big choice on the women front at the moment.
Then they can always go for someone über cool and totally fitting like The XX or The Bullitts.
Adele is too easy a choice but not really a good fit.
Give away line from Mendes— and again the Broccoli kids have not a clue in hiring yet another non action “serious” director and apparently have learned little since the Quantum disaster– “The action needs to be balanced with the drama.”. Read: slow going/heavy scenery chewing– will make Quantum look like Indiana Jones.
SKYFALL sounds like one of those airplane disaster flicks from the ’70′s.
Agreed. This also happened with Michael Apted.
Seriously. Why don’t they hire Martin Campbell to do all of them? He’s coming off a flop and obviously knows how to direct Bond films well.
Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her; MI6 comes under attack, and Bond must track down and destroy the threat.
So…it’s basically The World Is Not Enough, complete with another director intended to balance the drama with the action.
(Or do the producers still think no one can remember the films they made prior to Casino Royale?)
Oddly enough that film was also partially set in Istanbul, just like this one…
I know producers are fond of changing things up in a long series, but ‘Skyfall’??? That’s worse than ‘Moonraker’ and ‘GoldenEye’. They better come up with a killer theme song. Maybe Adele will have a singing voice by the time they need to record a theme song.
Can someone please explain Daniel Craig’s appeal? I know, I know- you’re thinking “are we really still having this conversation?” Well, yes. Yes we are.
I’m still confused as to why everyone wants James Bond to look like he just came off a three day cocaine bender. This dude couldn’t get more creepy looking. I feel like Bond wants me to sit on his lap.
Fiennes should have played Bond. Craig can take Blofeld.
I’m still a bit mystified by the whole thing as well. I can understand modern audiences liking a darker take on the role, but that’s down to the script more than the actor.
Craig doesn’t bring anything to the role that a Clive Owen or Michael Fassbender wouldn’t have done just as well. Actually, that’s not entirely true, since prior to Craig I don’t believe Fleming’s creation had ever been regularly described with terms like short, creepy, fugly, haggard, etc.
They ran out of Ian Fleming’s original titles. What did you expect?

There are four short story titles left: Risico, The Property of a Lady, The Hildebrand Rarity, and 007 in New York.
The first two would work as film titles, IMHO.
I’m really surprised they agreed on something so generic and bland, considering how much criticism their usage of “Quantum of Solace” received. (It may have been a Fleming title, but there’s a reason he relegated it to short story status.)
“Skyfall” sounds about as exciting and glamorous as a Twilight novel. Unfortunately, I have a feeling it might end up being a fitting title for the film itself.
$230 million for a Bond movie?
Expect plenty of tricked out cars, lasers and isolated superbases for villains, lol!
This is probably going to be “Die Another Day 2.”
There better be some serious action for $230 mil for a movie with Daniel “I can’t open a movie and have multiple bombs” Craig. I just don’t care for him as Bond anyway. He always looks like he just sucked on a lemon.
always loved James Bond movies…
The last two Bond films, in my opinion were the worst ever. I’ll be skipping this one.
$230 million US Dollars? For what? Sony Said Quantum of Solace cost $400 million with print and adverting include, this is after all money they got for product placement is deducted.
If Skyfall cost the same as Quantum then for the teetering on the edge of abyss MGM to break even Skyfall has to make a lot more than Quantum because the studio does not see the full Box Office. It is Hollywood accounting and it boggles the mind, the studios love the headline of record openers so much they don’t want to mention they only get a portion of the money back.
$600 million seems more then enough to pay for a $400 million movie but it’s not.
Sadly the Bond series needs to reboot the reboot, pick a young suave actor and go back to small budgets. Craig is not bad as Bond but he is no Sean Connery. Bring back the humor and glamor to Bond.
