ABC just gave full-season orders to three more series: freshmen Once Upon A Time and Last Man Standing and sophomore Happy Endings, which previously received a pickup of six additional scripts. Additionally, struggling new drama Pan Am is staying alive with an order for five additional scripts. The back-nine order for Once Upon A Time comes after only two
airings as the fairytale-themed series quickly established itself as the breakout new drama series this season. Once Upon A Time and the Tim Allen-starring Last Man Standing join previously picked up Suburgatory and Revenge to bring the number of ABC freshman shows given a full season to four, more than any other network so far this season.
For Happy Endings, the episodic order comes after solid showings the last two weeks, including hitting a series high. As for ABC’s other sophomore series with a 13-episode order, drama Body Of Proof, there are five episodes in the can leftover from last season, so the network already has 18 episodes on tap for this season. (Though, at least for now, it doesn’t look like the extra two scripts ordered last month will be converted into episodes.) The script order for Pan Am buys the network some time as it’s awaiting to see new showrunner Steve Maeda’s vision for the series.

Yes yes yes. So happy for Happy Endings
like OUAT but LOVE Grimm! it makes me haaaaappppyy (and scared) i hope it gets a full season. when woul that be announced?
I like both (GRIMM & ONCE UPON A TIME) as well and am glad both are successful. It’s soooo nice to have truly creative shows for a change.
What about man up? that show is awesome
Happy Endings – yay!
Great news. Happy Endings has really come into its own this season and Once Upon a Time shows great promise.
I’m behind on Pan Am, and not that compelled to catch up, so…yeah.
Agreed–the narrative air really went out of that balloon, no?
Once Upon a Time, Revenge, Suburgatory, Happy endings have great writing. Happy Endings has improved in season 2.
I wonder how long until Last Man Standing gets moved to Fridays in an effort to form a new TGIF lineup? I can see it happening this midseason. With a TGIF lineup that’ll include Last Man Standing, Cougar Town, The Manzanis, and either The Middle or Suburgatory slotting as the 4th show. I know Paul Lee was saying he was interesting in reviving the night and it seems like scripted programming is making its glorious return to Friday nights.
Either way, I’m psyched that Happy Endings got the back order. It’s a hilarious show.
YES!!!
Go ‘Happy Endings’! Best comedy on Broadcast TV!
Fingers crossed for PAN AM.
Be happy for your 5 scripts. It’s a truly awful show. So BORING.
But congrats to Happy Endings and Last Man Standing!!!!
You’re entitled to your opinion. I’m entitled to mine. I can’t believe you took the time to write that stupid snark at me for liking PAN AM. Get a life.
I’m with you. For once a show that’s not afraid to be different. Love the 60′s and I love PanAm.
Someone who spends an hour a week watching Pan Am is telling someone else to get a life?
ABC destroyed Pan Am before it was out of the gate. The writing of the pilot was very weak but the story idea was there and it has beautiful design. ABC has dumbed it down to oblivion.
The problem is that ABC thinks they can write the show better than the writers. The one hour current people at the studio and network are absolute idiots.
Everyone be warned.
Love Pan AM! I can’t figure out if it is campy or what but I love it!
Love Man Up , Teri Polo looks better than ever, love the guys, they are what the average guys looks like. abc has to give it a chance !!!
Your post has more jokes than the last two episodes of MAN UP.
So happy to see ONCE UPON A TIME get the full season pick up but it looks like I’m going to feel so emotional if PAN AM gets cancel the same thing it happen when ABC doomed CHARLIE’S ANGELS.
Whats happening with Man Up ?? Great show, Those characters relate to every one i know, hope the net work gives it a chance. Teri Polo and Chris are great, as is the rest of the cast.
Yea for me! $$$$$$$
abc needs to pick up Man Up, One of the funniest shows on tv, its needs more hype, It has been on its own, man up needs a chance !!!!
HAPPY ENDINGS!!! Phenomenal! This show is fantastic and has a great young voice.
What happened to the 2 Body of Proof scripts that were ordered, then? Not going ahead? (And I thought it was 4 episodes left from last season?)
Kevin, get a grip! its only a tv show. Your tastes are questionable at best. Yikes!
Good for ABC, sticking up for a ratings-challenged but good quality show. See, not all network TV suits are heartless, greedy bastards, at least not 100% the time…
Yay for Once Upon a Time! Love that show.
Once Upon A Time is so much fun, it’s absolutely charming and is great to look at – very glad it’s going to be around for a while!!
“Once” seems to have it’s charms, and good production values.. Script orders do mean much more than that Pan Am needs a re-tool, and quick.
I think NBC’s The Playboy Club had more potential than the…ahem…. rather slow moving Pan Am. I do salute ABC for looking at writing/storyline to perk up Pan Am.
Angels was a disaster, and considering the behind the camera talent involved, kind of a shock.
REVENGE is sweet (for now), but is somewhat limited by the core story long term.
Ur kidding right?! Best comedy on TV?! Haha! Yeah right!!!!
At least Tommy can spell correctly.
It’s the best comedy by far from its class last year. And one of the best on air for sure….
Love Pan Am want to see it renewed.
@Rik – yep, I worry about Revenge’s longevity, too but right now this show is HOT, good writing, high production values, and it really keeps you interested. I think they’ll come up with something, though – I haven’t read The Count of Monte Cristo in a long time but maybe they’ll take a page out of that…
Paul Lee seems to have chosen some very good pilots in Once Upon a Time, Revenge and Suburgatory and sticking with Happy Endings.
Diane, you’re right, there were 4 not 5 scripts held over from last season. And stop reading Deadline for your entertainment news. The additional scripts ordered will be produced. Mark my words.
Ha, thanks Minnie, that’s why I asked for confirmation. I think the initial erroneous report was from EW – I was surprised to see it “confirmed” here.
(And I asked my question before they added the explanation about the additional 2 scripts.)
ABC and their head writers need to utilize the 5 scripts offered for Pan Am to clean this show up and give it some kind of proper direction and not be all over the place as it has been as of late.
The show has potential and the network brass must be seeing something out of this, but this is a chance for this new writer to bring a newer vision and stability of the storylines to this program. Bring some energy into the show and make it feel worth watching instead of dragging its feet each and every week. It has promise, but it needs a smoother flow and consistency.
I definitely agree with you on that one Jed, PAN AM has a lot of potential, last week’s episode showing Maggie’s background really shows that they need to move Christina Ricci front and center and utilize her talents as an actress more on this show, and also have better story lines along with good writing.
I’m rooting for PAN AM!
Not only get direction and tweek things – but move it to another night, or swap it with DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES.
