EXCLUSIVE: ABC is developing an English-language remake of mega hit telenovela Soy Tu Dueña, with Jorge Zamacona (10-8: Officers On Duty) writing and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria executive producing. ABC’s version will be co-produced by Televisa, the company behind the Mexican telenovela; Lionsgate TV; and ABC Studios. It centers on a Texas heiress who loses her fortune and is forced to move back to the ranch she grew up on. Zamacona will serve as showrunner and executive produce with Longoria though her Unbelievable Entertainment, as well as Tariq Jalil, who helped put the English
adaptation together, through his Intrigue banner.
Soy Tu Dueña — which means I’m Your Owner but is translated into English as “A Woman Of Steel” — itself is a remake of the 1995 telenovela La Dueña. It became a ratings sensation when it aired on Univision from June through December last year, ranking as the most-watched telenovela ever and the second-highest-rated in 18-49 on the leading Spanish-language broadcaster in the U.S. Toward the end of its run in December, Soy Tu Dueña posted a string of timeslot wins over its English-language competitors and led Univision to a couple of nightly wins among 18-49 — including one for the telenovela’s December 27 finale, which was the highest-rated program of the night on any U.S. broadcast network and the second-highest-rated non-sports program of the week behind an original episode of Longoria’s Desperate Housewives. For a large portion of its run, Soy Tu Dueña, created by Ines Rodena and headlined by popular telenovela stars Fernando Colunga and Lucero, regularly ranked among the top 10 shows in any language among adults 18-49 and top five with adults 18-34. ABC is the only American network to successfully adapt a Latin American telenovela, with dramedy Ugly Betty. CAA reps Zamacona and Longoria, who is also repped by attorney Brad Small.

Hopefully Paul Lee will treat Soy Tu Duena Better than Stephen McPherson allegedly treated Ugly Betty.
I agree with you Jack I saw the original Spanish version I hope don’t sucks
It will be interesting to see if the Spanish audience shows up for this. It could be huge with Eva…
“Stay tuned for scenes from next week’s episode of ‘Women Arguing in Spanish while men stare dramatically.’”
This is great! So glad to see Eva Longoria producing!
@Cash, and do you think it will get good ratings $$.
Really ABC, come on…you cancel our beloved daytime soaps and now want us to buy into a spanish soap remake. I like Eva Longoria but I think your network is going downhill.
this is pathetic…has anyone ever seen any of this ‘shows’ telenovela are for the uneducated, lowest level denominator ..so unsophisticated..sad to see ABC scratching the bottom of the barrel and looking for programming ideas from these low brow channels like televisa and univision…
Those channels are not for the uneducated. Obviously you are?!!!
While some Spanish programming is definitely vapid, to say its all for the uneducated is racist and ignorant.
The original has the heroine being emotionally destroyed when left at the altar; THAT’S the motivation for the move to the countryside. Now it’s loss of MONEY?!? Nice. Also? Eva Longoria is no Lucero.
Agreed!!! Lucero and Fernando Colunga have had super STAR POWER from previous novelas and I doubt they can pull that kind into the english remake.. I’m a bit doubtful. I was an avid “Soy tu Duena” fan and my whole family watched it!
Well I am glad to know ABC follows hispanic shows like telenovelas and its not just for ignorant unsophisticated people I myself am a professional and I like watching novelas, it’s a great way to learn spanish of course it depend which novela we are talking about Soy tu duena was a great one
hahahaha!!! i love the fact that i myself am of hispanic origin and i see novelas and i’m at the edge of my seat but then i see parodies of them and i think, woe!!!! now that’s funny!!! with me being at the edge of my seat and all, i sometiems don’t see just how overacted we like our novelas….
If this show really wants to be a hit, the original protagonists should be the same! The novela was loved by me and billions more and we would like to see it kept original. Lucero just needs to move out here and become an actress here because she truly made this novela the mega hit it was! I LOVE YOU LUCERO AND FERNANDO
I have to admit to loving this show. I hope this version is just as good.
Soy Tu Dueña, was such an amazing novela, and Lucero made it a hit because she really is an extraordinary actress who trespasses the emotions of the character through tv, when she feels happy u feel that happiness, when she feels sad, u feel that sadness
Beatrice I so agree with u Lucero just needs to move out here to hollywood and become and actress here.
And for that person who said novelas were for uneducated people that’s just racist!!
They are getting ideas from the best mexican soap opera ever, that is not a “pathetic” idea. Remakes r never exactly the same and they always change many things so they basically arent remakes, just like Ugly Betty. I think this will be a great show! If u dont think so lay off the rude comments and go touch yourself
Remakes don’t make it. Something will be lost in translation. American soaps are cold if you’re not a die hard. Colunga and Liverpool did it already…no need for it to be done again.
would like Eva to do more serious parts and let herself be labled as she is. She is fine.
