EXCLUSIVE: Adam Shankman will be set by New Line Cinema to direct The Nutcracker, a new take on the classic fairy tale that is being eyed as a tent pole family holiday film for late 2013. The script was written by Darren Lemke, who just worked with New Line on Jack the Giant Killer, and whose credits include Shrek Forever After. This version of The Nutcracker goes back to the original 1815 book by E.T.A. Hoffman, about a young girl and a wooden toy soldier who comes alive and leads her on an adventure. The take is a drama with action and a love story that aspires to be similar in tone to Alice in Wonderland. It is shaping up as Shankman’s next film.
The film is being produced by Temple Hill’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, who are coming off Twlight Saga: Breaking Dawn–Part 1. It’s likely that Shankman and his Offspring Entertainment partner Jennifer Gibgot will become involved as well by the time the deal is made. Shankman is just coming off Rock of Ages, the New Line adaptation of the stage musical that stars Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Mary J. Blige, Paul Giamatti and Bryan Cranston. The film opens June 1. It would be Shankman’s third film with New Line, after Hairspray. Shankman is repped by UTA as is Lemke.

What happened to the Universal version announced last July?
Did ANYONE watch the Nathan Lane/Jon Turturro version released last year?
Or the Robert Zemeckis version announced in 2009 but apparently never made?
Really, what the hell is with studios and trying to make new versions of this story?
There have been a number of films released over the years and I can’t remember any of them doing that well. At what point do you realize that there is no audience for this?
Agreed, though this is a Shankman film, meaning it will be filled with A-list talent, and have a huge budget. Even if it’s terrible, it’ll make money, like all his films do.
Say what you will about the films, i havn’t loved all of them, but as far as commercially, Shankman is a studio’s dream. he thinks commercially and its not antithetical to his natural process….4 of last 5 movies made 100 million, ans these are comedy/musicals. his miss if you could call it that was cheaper by the dozen 2 which made 80+ and was still a success. Walk to remember and wedding planner were both solid surprises and made for 10 and 35 respectively…Is his achillies heel musicals? Well see….he did drop out of four christmases to do hairspray, but made 200 Wolrd wide on that, so maybe he has his finger on something…Nice guy, exactly what you expect, prima donna on the little stuff on the big stuff, he gets it done and actors love him…plus he did the choreography for Boogie Nights, a credit anyone would love to take to the grave.
There’s an easy joke to made here but I won’t do it. It involves Shankman and nuts
I’M SO EXCITED!!! I LOVE Christmas movies AND November-December fantasy epics (‘Lord of the Rings’, ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Narnia’ obviously set the stage for this pattern).
But no, I was LIVID over last year’s Nathan Lane film — supposedly with a “wide-release” — barely getting ANY theaters showing it, so I didn’t end up seeing it. It’s home video release wasn’t even advertised. SO sad for a classic tale.
I too remember a heavier-themed concept being announced in December of ’09, having to do with “the theme of beauty” if I recall…is this THAT one? In any event, the Tim Burton-Meets-’Twilight’ seems like the most viable for today’s market, so long as they don’t throw it away to all FLASH
Ah, yes, Jennifer Gibgot. So nice, so useless.
If by useless you mean she: casts his movies, sets up about two dozen projects a year, has been the force behind a billion dollar franchise, breaks acting talent, directing talent, and, oh yeah, she broke her brother’s career as well – wow, wish I could be that “useless” someday. Here’s a thought: why don’t you go back to fetching your boss’s latte and dream of a day when someone may comment on your utility on Deadline, which, by my estimation, will never, ever, happen.
