AMC’s newest series, period Western Hell On Wheels, was off to a strong start last night. It drew 4.4 million viewers and ranked as the cable network’s second-highest-rated series premiere behind mega-hit The Walking Dead, which opened with 5.3 million last fall, in total viewers as well as adults 18-49 and 25-54. Hell On Wheels is young-skewing, drawing more adults 18-49 viewers (2.4 million) than adults 25-54 (2.3 million). “I congratulate the entire cast and crew of Hell On Wheels for pulling off a project of this scope,” AMC president Charlie Collier said. “Bringing the grandeur of the Old West and the building of the railroad to life is no small feat and the Gaytons, with their team, have delivered a beautiful world of which we are all so proud.” The eOne-produced Hell On Wheels, set in post-Civil War America circa 1865, was created and written by Joe and Tony Gayton.

Awesome. Now, after next week’s drop-off, how long before it’s cancelled?
was NOT impressed. this show’s going the way of “Rubicon.” one year and out. not the standard AMC fare that we’re used to. a definitive drop in quality as far as dialogue, storytelling and acting go. reminded me of a music video, all style no substance. side note, Colm Meaney SUCKED.
The performances could have been better from everyone but the show has promise.
Why didn’t AMC reveal the Walking Dead ratings? How much retention was there?
great show!!!!! The numbers will only get better.
50%+ drop next week…Breaking Bad it ain’t.
It’s Deadwood’s PanAm
A very good pilot; it definitely delivered what I wanted to see: quality writing and beautifully cinematography and art direction. People can dislike it if they please, but the predictions of cancellation for something that immediately garnered better ratings than Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Killing just serve to make the people spouting such declarations look like clowns.
Couldn’t get through the pilot. If it wasn’t airing after The Walking Dead, I doubt it would be getting those numbers.

Thanks for keeping score… by the way, you missed the midget Mexicans getting stomped by clowns bit.
Not to mention the female “camp followers!”
Had it’s moments- the scuffle between the woman and the savage in the woods was pretty intense, but then, there were moments that pretty much put myself in a hypnotic trance.
But we’re in a dire need of a western – and this definitely fills the bill. There’s too much of an monopoly on braincell deteriorating sitcoms and reality shows.

I recorded it but haven’t watched it yet. But I do find everyone’s opinions interesting. Is it safe to say that the western is definitely dead?
Unless it’s titled “Justified,” then yes, yes it is.
Fantastic start for this show! Like it or not, it is a solid western, and it’s good to see one of those again. This one looks like a slow burn to something great.
This was the most gorgeously shot TV show I’ve ever seen. Movie-quality cinematography.
Like many pilots, it’s hard to judge the acting and plot because all the pieces are just getting put in place.
People ranting about stereo-types need to understand that this show is set in 1865, not 2005. The “N” word WAS used all the time. “Injuns” really DID raid and scalp whites, justly or not. Former slaves really DID talk a certain way, just like former soldiers did, on both sides of the war.
Where do you think those sterio-types came from?
This is a show about how it was at the time. Don’t dismiss it just because you don’t like the way it looks through your 2011 lense.
Dumb-ass, modern-day Americans weaned on rap music, video games and reality TV don’t respect history nor do they have imaginations, so your words fall on deaf ears, Shadallion.
That said, I thought it was pretty good for a first episode. Any show with Michael Mann vets Ted Levine and Tom Noonan is worth a look.
Too bad there will never be another John Wayne.
Just tell me how he knew that his first victim would go into the confessional, to be there lying in wait?
Still waiting to be wowed. Kept waiting through the first show for something to grab me. After Deadwood, this is dead on arrival. Too bad, could have been a contender. If only….
Great start off for a very promising mini series. Why the neg. comms? Have no idea.
Solid writing, acting, directing and cinematography. Maybe the haters missed out on tivo-ing the Kim Kardashian monstrosity and are taking it out on quality tv.
I guess if it was on TNT I’d be more forgiving, but this is AMC and the bar is set a lot higher. I thought it was kind of dreadful, actually. Dull leading man, preposterous opening scene, cartoonish villain, mediocre dialog. And then they go and kill off the one interesting character, played by the one actor (Ted Levine) who is giving a decent performance.
This isn’t going to make up for that missing fourth season of Deadwood, that’s for sure.
A lot of navel gazing, and not executed very well. AMC should be embarrassed — so should Common.
Because apparently everyday that soldier goes there to repent..er…well..I mean… Yeah it makes no sense.
Know your prey’s habits — and you’ll get your man — up close is best for those who know how. That’s like wondering how John Wilkes Booth knew where to get Lincoln, or how the “assassins” in “Unforgiven” caught the offending cowboys — one with his pants down. There’s nothing better than a good Western. It’s not “Justified,” but th en again nothing is, but is is a true period Western
Great Show ! I kook forward to seeing the next show, It gives a real view of the west and the building of the railroad. The actors are doing an excellent job. Bravo to them. I hope the show continues and stays true to the hard brutal life and develop the characters that must survive but still keep their humanity. It is USA history lesson.
“It is USA history lesson”
no, it’s a revisionist USA history lesson.
