EXCLUSIVE: FX’s hot new drama series American Horror Story‘s 13-episode first season will be actually 12.5 episodes. The horror drama’s first season finale on Dec. 21, which had been slated as two-hour, will now be 90-minutes. The trimming of the finale is a result of American Horror Story’s very aggressive production schedule which left no breathing room. The project was picked up to pilot in late February. Creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk couldn’t work on the pilot until they wrapped the second season of Glee, so it didn’t start shooting until late May. In a quick turnaround, FX picked up the pilot to series on July 18, and it was rushed to production 2 weeks later to make the Oct. 5 premiere date. With the first episode after the pilot doing some reshoots and some of the episodes requiring 8-day shoots vs. the standard 7 because of complex scenes, production on the series is now at a point where Episode 13 would wrap on Dec. 15, leaving no time for post-production to make the Dec. 21 air date. And because of the holidays, it didn’t make sense to push that last episode to Dec. 28 or the new year. Murphy had been discussing the issue with FX president John Landgraf for the past few weeks. There was an option for the series to drop the 13th episode altogether and air an hourlong finale, but I hear Murphy was able to put together a plan for a 90-minute episode to give viewers a satisfying ending. American Horror Story has already been renewed for a second season after a red-hot ratings run, punctuated by another series high this week, and I hear that its second season may be extended beyond 13 episodes.

Gotta say, I’m enjoying this show in spite of myself — they actually seem to be maintaining the tone of high camp they were aiming for — but for the love of God, don’t extend the next season past 13 episodes. It’s blowing my mind that Murphy & Falchuk have kept this runaway narrative train on the tracks for the half-season we’ve gotten so far. Extending each season’s run is a recipe for disaster — the plots will meander, the characters will wallow, and they’ll lose the weird, hypercondensed plotting that’s preventing you from turning away. Keep it thirteen episodes and promote each season until it’s an event.
I wouldnt worry about that. FX’s idea of an “extended season” is 14 episodes
Gotta say, Chris is right. Don’t screw with the formula, and it’s working in spite of itself. LOVING this show. Let’s keep it on track!

Totally agree! This has been the most wickedly entertaining hour of television all season. Murphy isn’t know for consistent seasons on his shows. Please just maintain the tone/style/twists …

Agree with Hamooli and Paul – Jessica Lange is amazing in this show. I won’t say the “E-” word for fear of a jinx, but seriously, she needs to be nominated.
This is not only the most interesting show on this season (hardly saying much with the new crap that got on), but this has been one of the most interesting shows on TV in years.
First of all, every week – SOMETHING HAPPENS (take note The Walking Dead).
Second, they don’t pull punches and get scared to push the boundaries.
Third, the show’s production values are top notch – along with solid acting and clever use of music.
Goes to show that it’s possible to make interesting and entertaining television.

How many episodes did you see? Many of us were skeptical about the first two episodes because we didn’t know where it was going to go! But, after third episode, it was clear that this show is big! I was hooked to the show, even my girlfriend, my family – we were all hooked because it’s spooky, it’s creepy in a good way. It’s seriously awesome show.
You’re right, it is pretty awful. The cast is outstanding but the writing is just a bunch of sensation-mongering gimmicks thrown at us in a desperate attempt to stop us from changing the channel. (And that’s why the other posters are right, that lengthening the season beyond 13 eps is a danger; there isn’t an infinite number of tawdry gimmicks that can be thrown at us.)
But AHS is that rare type of show where quality really doesn’t matter. It’s a depraved, degenerate, demented delight, like nothing else anywhere on TV. Bring on the silly gimmicks!

Not a good show. It’s plot is so thin and the story lines are so contrived I can’t believe it’s still on. Ratings are king though and it may get better in season 2. If the story telling and “out of left field” ideas continue viewers will surely tire of the extreme situations and look elsewhere soon.
I do not follow tv shows because they bore me and I can’t keep track of them and they’re just lame. But this show is soo addicting I wish it was on every night, I get pissed when it’s over because I could just keep watching it. Every actor on there is spot on to their character it’s just amazing. It’s different and weird, and that’s what gives it it’s appeal and what draws people in. They can extend it as much as they want, it’s edge of your seat suspense and I love it.

There hasn’t been a more unique and cleverly twisted television show like this for quite some time. It’s The Addams Family inverted! I’ve heard folks say it’s more bizarre than Twin Peaks. The characters are developing quite nicely and the story lines are involved and intriguing.
This show isn’t for the closed-minded. It has so much creative potential and we’ve only seen the start of it. Two hours or ninety minutes, it matters not. We get to see it!
I don’t know if AHS is more bizarre than Twin Peaks (those are some pretty BIG shoes to fill) but I am so addicted to this show. I love everything about it! Even when it’s cheesy and doesn’t quite make sense. I live for Wednesday nights now.
This show is the best show yet I am so addicted already and this is the scariest shows I have ever seen I love stuff that have sex, drama, twists and turns, stuff that jumps out at ya, and to have the shit scared out of me that’s the kind of stuff I like and that’s what this show is all about love this show lol
Love the show. I watch each episode over and over just to pick up clues and Jessica Lange is so fantastic to watch,..she is amazing. I always go into a trance when I watch her. Keep the show going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Her character and her acting makes this show glitter
I haven’t seen a show like this on tv for a loooong time, I absolutly love it! For those of you that don’t like the show, don’t watch and why bother going through all the trouble to come to these websites and leave comments. This show is the best, its a lot better than some of these other lame shows like “keeping up with kardashians”. I watched that show once and never watched anything on E! after that. AHS is awesome can’t wait for the next pisode!
I am in love with this show. I think it’s got lots of intense qualities that many others lack. I dig the psycho-sexual tension, and fact everyone has secrets, and reason for being there. Although some of the situations between characters are dragging, I am GLUED to anything in magazines, online, and on tv. Even a commercial will send me over the edge! I’m inspired by the dark, demented, yet sexy appeal to this hot series. I cannot waittt for season 2.

AHS manages to be campy, grotesque, fascinating, funny and scary as hell all at the same time. If you do not watch every single second and pay close attention, you miss the gems that drop out of her mouth like “Koreans are always suspicious, they still haven’t gotten over Hiroshima”. This show is not afraid to be politically incorrect, Jessica Lange embodies her character perfectly… with a simple look, a hand gesture, she can create a monologue… she is perfection and the show is simply brilliant. My only regret is that it is FAR TOO SHORT! Every time it ends I die a little inside. That is all! <3 <3 <3
