EXCLUSIVE: FilmDistrict will issue the domestic release of Angelina Jolie’s feature directorial debut In The Land Of Blood And Honey in the native BHS language of Bosnia. The language, which was called Serbian-Croatian during the Bosnian War depicted in the film, is now called Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (Bosanski/Hrvatski/Srpski). The film will carry subtitles. FilmDistrict platforms the film December 23 in New York and Los Angeles and widens the release in January.
When Jolie shot her script, she filmed it both in BHS and English language, with the intention of reaching a broad audience around the world. Jolie clearly preferred to go for the authenticity of the native language. FilmDistrict’s Peter Schlessel and Bob Berney agreed with her after after they saw both versions within the past few days. “I’m honored that FilmDistrict has chosen to release the film in the United States in the original BHS-language version,” Jolie said in a statement. “It was always my hope that U.S. audiences would have the opportunity to experience this version.”
The drama is set in the backdrop of the Bosnian War that tore the Balkan region apart in the 1990s. The film tells the story of Danijel (Goran Kostic) and Ajla (Zana Marjanovic), Bosnians from different sides of the brutal ethnic war. As the conflict takes hold of their lives, the relationship between them changes, their motives and connection to one another become ambiguous and their allegiances grow uncertain. The couple demonstrates the emotional, moral and physical toll that war takes on individuals, and the consequences stemming from the lack of political will to intervene in a society stricken with conflict.
The English-language version could be used in some overseas territories, and later when the film gets a VOD run in the U.S. and possibly on DVD.

“she filmed it both in BHS and English language”
Wait. They shot the movie twice?
There is no Bosnian language. There is Serbian language and Croatian language
If ever a film needed Goran Visjnic…
its serbian language.SERBIAN.SRPSKI!!!!!!!!!!1
the first dictionary of BOSNIAN (BOSANSKI)language was published in the early 17th century. The first Serbian (srpski) dictionary was published in the 19th century. interesting, hah? and it is also very interesting how petty you are to cling on to the name of the language mentioned in the article, even though you don’t have the facts to uphold your opinion. Therefore, to re-cap, it is BOSNIAN LANGUAGE. p.s. – the moral- you are not building yourself up by trying to knock someone else down, or at least you should not. But I suppose that is just the way CERTAIN people are.
Tako Hana…
Good decision, the only acceptable choice in my opinion. I look forward to seeing the film in December.
This film won’t make lunch money.
No shit, Sherlock. The movie was never intended to be a summer blockbuster. It’s a small indie Jolie wrote that’s based on her humanitarian work with refugees. If she’d intended for the movie to make a butt load of money then she’d be in front of the camera, not behind it.
You guys pop up on every blog about Jolie.
How much does she pay you people? Because you are good.
From the gate of her lateset films – several of them – being in front of the camera hasn’t helped jolie’s movies, either (The Tourist, etc.). The only thing jolie was remotely good (cough, cough) at was the Laura Croft movies. She didn’t even help the movie on the life of Daniel Pearl and who could blame anyone for not flocking to it? MaryAnn Pearl is a biracial woman and the makers of the movie should have cast a biracial actress. If jolie wants to bring this to the attention of those who didn’t live through it that is where she should have given up a bit of authenticity and released the English version. Who is going to relate to something when they can’t understand one word of the dialogue?
my goodness arent you miserable –if she is such a horrible actress why is she one of the highest paid…..and why do her movies all make money–why does she get nominated almost for every movie she does(plus she was nominated best actress for daniel pearl — sorry but you make my fools list.
I hate comments when you haven’t seen the film…
Not a huge fan of subtitles, but after seeing the trailer online here last week, I can see why it would work. I think AJ is going to surprise alot of people!
I am proud of Angelina. Bold subject matter, bold decision. Hope she gets some recognition come Oscar time.
If it is very good (which i think it might be) The haters will be out in force.
It appears those who don’t give a damn about the character of the person they are admiring are already out in full force. The “charity” work is a very old trick that allows the rich to keep their money – it’s called a tax write-off. If aj and bp wanted to be charitable go into the Appalachain Mountains where anything beyond 3rd grade is considered higher education, where people may not be sure of what a doctor/dentis is, let alone have seen one and give. She hates Thanksgiving as a “celebration of murder” is a large load of stupidity. What happened to the American Indians in this country was and still is an atrocity but the 1st Thanksgiving was a peacful affair. But aj still hates it? Let her go on an Indian reservation and give. Not every tribe runs a casino and some of those places resemble a 3rd world country right here – Pine Ridge Souix Reservation 1972. Chartiy isn’t plastering your name everywhere you can find space. It’s not traipsing around the world with cameras following you. It’s going where no one knows who you are, no one will ever find out what you did, and giving until you can’t give anymore anyway.
As for this movie, if aj wants to “teach” the rest of world something it’s only common sense to present the movie in a language the audience can speak or at least understand. Once again, aj dropped the ball.
Angelina is so pretentious and full of herself. If she weren’t Jon Voigt’s daughter, she would be working for an insurance company.
Really? Come on Roger C. really? Like her or not…you cannot deny she is talented. When she is good she is phenomenal and when she is not she at least is breathtakingly gorgeous…for instance Girl Interrupted vs. the Tourist. I can’t stand her hubby Brad, but at least i’m not crazy saying he would work for Walgreens.
Point, set, match to reallyguy??
I wouldn’t call one good movie “talented.” It’s more like blind luck. As for “breathtaking” I woudldn’t say that either. Beauty, true beauty, is underneath the surface, too, and angie is a nasty skank. Brad isn’t her husband but he was someone else’s when he and angie decided they couldn’t keep their hands to themselves. You can’t help how you feel but you can damn sure show a spouse the respect of ending your old business first and not just cheating. But, class is something aj never had. And even if you want to go along with “beautiful” that is not aj’s “get out of jail free” card to carry herself as she pleases and do as she pleases. There is “right” and “wrong” for the rich and well-known, too.
Angie was a really pro trooper during the shooting here in Hungary. (Brad has a cameo in the movie) plus she donated a house to Bosnian old lady in Bosnia. she is a great woman.
The language choice is a great decision. I think this is gonna be a great hit in the market. Keep it up Angie J.
The language is a great choice? Are you kidding? When you want to reach people who are worlds away – literally – with something vastly different from what they know and presnet it “up close and personal” you do so in ways – and language – your audience can relate to. The only people this is going to “reach out and touch” are those who have already gone through it, know what living in Bosnia was like, or those who still have family there. Those who know nothing about life at the point of the country’s history will still have no idea what it was about.

Did Angelina Jolie use (steal) this book (The Soul Shattering in English) written by the Bosnian-Croatian author James J. Braddock a.k.a Josip J. Kneževi?, as the story platform for her movie In The Land of Blood and Honey?
Did she totally miss the truth and core of that genocidal war against Bosnia and her people?
Why was she banned from filming in Bosnia by the most influental organization of women – victims of the war?
Did she rewrite history and offended thousands of women and other innocent victims of the Serbian aggression on Bosnia & Herzegovina?
Should American women and human rights organizations get involved?
i read on a website that she stole the idea from another writer…
she didn’t steal anything people!!!! All she did was take a true story and turn it into a real hollywood cowboys vs indians bullshit so it should be a best seller
FYI: the original story (and a true one at that) is about a Serb man married to a Muslim woman (though that only comes to fruition during the bosnian civil war) who attempt to flee the war in Bosnia.
They try to make it to Serbia but are shot my Muslim snipers a few hundred metres before they make it to Serb lines
Jolie has turned the true story upside down and into a controversial hollywood fiction story which should sell really well: a man (serb) rapes a woman (bosnian muslim) and then falls in love with her
And you people say Jolie has no class??? She’s going to make a killing with this movie, probably win an Oscar for being politically correct and get some award from some Muslim organisation
