EXCLUSIVE: After an extensive search, comic book and Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan has been tapped to pen Showtime’s drama series adaptation of Stephen King’s 2009 novel Under the Dome, from DreamWorks Television. The supernatural thriller revolves around locals at a Maine vacation spot who battle one another when a force field suddenly surrounds their town and cuts them off from the rest of the world. DreamWorks’ Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider originally secured the rights to King’s novel shortly after it was published in November 2009. The project was set up as a series at Showtime in August when the producers and Showtime launched a search for a writer. Under The Dome is executive produced by King and DreamWorks TV’s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank. Vaughan is a familiar name for comic book and sci-fi fans. He is best known for writing the comic book series Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, Runaways and Pride Of Baghdad and for being a writer on ABC’s popular series Lost during seasons 3-5.

One of the best of King’s most recent books. Some will want them to change the ending though.
That would be me.
Loved the book – Big Jim Rennie is one of the best villains in recent memory. I didn’t care for the ending – not because of the reveal itself (good an explanation as any I suppose) but because it didn’t seem to pay off the story thematically.
I sincerely hope it’ll be a limited series that is a faithful, accurate adaptation of the book. For me, this was one of King’s best novels in nearly two decades. It would be a real shame if this gets turned into a series where only the premise remains to drag it over several seasons.
This could be another great miniseries in the vein of “The Stand”. Let’s hope this project does the novel justice.
Just a minor quibble, the story is not at all supernatural, it’s science fiction.
Not to quibble, but there IS at least one supernatural moment. It concerns the voices of the dead and a dog.
BKV is one of the best comic book writers of this generation. Ex Machina, Y the Last Man and Runaways. He’ll do a phenomenal job on this
This is going to be great storytelling. And no, the ending doesn’t have to be changed. Just trust the audience.
1000 pages of red-neck fighting. Hooray.
I found it disappointing.
Grant Morrison called and wants his look back.
Under the Dome was also one of the funniest Steve King books in a while. I hope the mini-series captures the humor. Under the Dome takes “LOL” to a new level. At least 20 times throughout the book I had to stop and laugh.

A quick guide to the works of Stephen King:
Republicans, Conservatives, Religious folks = Crazy, Evil, Villains
Who will be cast to portray Big Jim Rennie in the Under the Dome mini series on Showtime? My vote for Gary Busey for Big Jim Rennie!
The whole time I was reading the book I kept seeing Alec Baldwin in my head playing this part. Also another good choice I think would be M.C. Gainey!
Gary Busey wouldn’t be a bad choice, but I would probably go with John Goodman. For Barbara ? How about either Viggo Mortensen or Peter Krause ?
King should insist that big Jim rennie be played by jets coach Rex Ryan. I pictured him in my mind through the whole book as rennie, works perfectly.
Make it a nice mini-series and keep the story the same as the book. Do the novel justice. A very good story. My favorite Stephen King novel. I didnt want to put it down till I was done. I’am about to start reading it again for the 2nd time. I can’t wait to see it on tv.
I see people suggesting Viggo Mortensen or even on another website Jeffery Donavon (Burn Notice) playing Dale Barbara, but I was thinking someone younger. Ryan Gosling (perhaps too famous, but why not) or Sam Worthington as Barbie would be good choices. Also, John Goodman came to mind as Big Jim (he played a similar character in O’ Brother, Where Art Thou as Big Dan and can be villainous). Ryan Hurst as Junior and Jennifer Carpenter as Piper Libby. So many characters and actors/actresses to play them, but not enough room. Just throwing out some suggestions here.
