The Roundabout Theatre has set Emmy-winning The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons, Jessica Hecht and Charles Kimbrough for a Scott Ellis-directed revival of Mary Chase’s 1944 Pulitzer Prize-winning play Harvey. Preview performances begin May 18 at Studio 54, and the play opens June 14 for a limited run that ends August 5. Parsons is playing Elwood P. Dowd, a guy who befriends a six-and-a-half-foot-tall rabbit. A Jonathan Tropper-scripted feature based on the original stage play temporarily hooked Steven Spielberg in 2009, but the filmmaker dropped out of the Fox-DreamWorks co-production because of difficulty finding the right guy to play Dowd, whom James Stewart portrayed in the original screen adaptation. Parsons seems like an ideal choice to bring Dowd to life on the stage, and maybe the stage run will reinvigorate the film project, though Parsons is an untested commodity in that realm.

Out of the box, Seth Rogen as Dowd and a Harvey who likes to talk about banging female bunnies.
You just described the entire plot of FX’s “Wilfred.”
I hope Dowd doesn’t become “Sheldon”.
There’s a big difference between eccentric and socially dysfunctional.
Now we’ll see if Parsons can really act.
I remember what director Joe Pytka said once, “Anyone can act. Comedy is hard. You either laugh or you don’t. You can’t fake that. If it’s not funny, then it’s just stupid. I love an actor who can make me laugh.”
Well, Parsons is one of the few who makes me laugh. What a great talent. One of the few really funny guys in lalaland. Good for him.
Not that they couldn’t find the right Dowd but the right Dowds both turned down the part, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Hanks turned down the role because they have sense enough to know that some movies should not be remade.
its a limited Broadway run, not a movie
I caught onto THE BIG BANG just this past year; and Parsons has the comedy chops.
HARVEY is totally him. I can’t see anyone else doing the movie again it at this point, unless it’s an unknown. Comedy will always be tougher than tragedy, and Parsons will prove it on Broadway.
I’m not really a fan of Big Bang, but I can see Parson’s in this part
Love Big Bang Theory, and it is due to his character….Good for him.
That delusional Hollywood wannabe Mayim Bialik and her Big Bang alter-ego Amy Farrah Fowler has ruined The Big Bang Theory for me, but I pathetically love Jim Parsons—the talented man is a force of nature. I have no doubt he will pull off the eccentric Elwood P. Dowd swimmingly. And if Spielberg takes notice, perhaps this could be the beginning of a promising big screen career for Parsons. No one on TV today deserves it more.
Dear Jim,
FYI, the electron that does a right angle turn, then a wing-over, then another right angle turn, is NOT an electron. It is part of a photo taken by a camera crew from a New Zealand cargo plane in flight over New Zealand. The photo appears on one frame and is 1/10 of a second long. This appears on the back cover of Ivan T. Sanderson, “Invisible Residents, the reality of underwater UFO’s”. The light went on in my brain when I saw the electron motion on the two December shows, approx Dec i, and Dec 8. The other 6 frames on the back cover are normal. These photos were taken on Dec 30, 1978! What a cover-up! Just thought I’d let you know the the G-forces would be horrendous on a human, but not on the UFO pilots.
Love the show. One question? How do you memorize, or do you know the scientific words you speak? I can follow alot of the words and they are correct. I am a Senior Design Engineer and loved the episode with the “septic tank” for the space station. Looking forward to new episodes.
Sincerely,
