The mostly rural theater chain reported net income of $3.1M, up from $530,000 in the period last year, on revenues of $134M, up 8.5%. The revenue figure nearly matched the $134.43M that analysts expected, while profits, at 24 cents a share, beat forecasts by a penny. Carmike says that the average price consumers spent for a ticket fell 1.8% to $6.49 due to “increased discounts and promotional activities.” But it had a 5.6% pickup in box office sales as average attendance per screen grew 7.8%. It also saw 14.4% growth in revenues from concessions as the average consumer spent $3.57, up 6.3%. As for 4Q, CEO David Passman says that “we expect the quarter to finish strongly.”

Funny how cutting ticket prices can increase attendance.
Didn’t they read about how movie theaters got through the Depression?
Bring on the dish giveaways!
I still have one of those “Dish’ giveaways my grandmother got it at a Los Angeles theater in the 30′s lol
Not too hard to figure out: ticket prices are too high in a bad economy. That’s why business is off–not the crappy movies out there. Get prices lower so families can go. The average family of four, in even a medium-sized city, is supposed to shell out over 50 bucks in ticket prices alone to go to the movies? And then add in concessions? Ridiculous.
Conversation I’ve had more than once:
“Want to see a movie?”
“Sure! Oh, wait… I keep forgetting it ends up being like $40 for the two of us with popcorn and stuff. I’m not sure I want to do that.”
“Yeah… Me either. Sucks. Anything on TV?”
Of course, when they report earnings, they bump up ticket prices again. Way to be counterproductive, Carmike!
Now it’s $5.50 for super bargain matinee, $8.00 for night showings Sunday – Thursday, $9.50 for night shows on Friday and Saturday. Now you’re making people look elsewhere.
If this company was truly productive, I would’ve gotten more hours. Nope.
The Carmike in my city is always a ghost town. There’s another theatre in town not even a half mile away and it has 2x more screens, two of them are huge, most of them with stadium seating.
Carmike has NO stadium seating whatsoever, terribly uncomfortable seats, and their biggest screen is about the size of an average screen at the more popular theatre.
Carmike is always dead. You can go on any given weeknight and there’s usually less than 10 people in a theatre. If you’re lucky, you’re the only one. And just as I looked at their website, I see their evening shows are now $9.25, previously $9. They’re the worst theatre in town, but always the first to raise their prices.
