EXCLUSIVE: CBS has cut the order to veteran comedy Rules Of Engagement from 18 to 13 episodes. Rules was originally picked up for 18 episodes, with two leftover episodes from last season bringing the total order to 20 half-hours. (Rules, which wraps production December 6, will now air 15 episodes.) The long-running comedy was slated to air on Saturdays, but after freshman How To Be A Gentleman‘s underwhelming launch in the Thursday 8:30 PM slot, Rules was summoned in and took over the post-Big Bang Theory berth. It currently tops the 8:30-9 PM time period in total viewers with 11.6 million and averages a healthy 3.7 rating in 18-49, after setting highs in several categories this fall. With rookie 2 Broke Girls performing as well as it does along with all CBS returning comedies, the network needs an opening to launch its midseason comedy starring Rob Schneider, so a shorter, 15-episode run of Rules will provide a slot for the newbie. As for next season, given Rules‘ solid performance, the veteran has a good shot to return, especially if the Schneider series underperforms and/or CBS expands its comedy offerings to eight in two-hour comedy blocks on Mondays and Thursdays.

No one understands CBS’s treatment of this show. At every opportunity CBS has tried to screw this show over. But here is the real situational comedy…THEY CAN’T!!! All this show does is perform better than all the NEW hit comedies they have tried to launch for the past 5 years. (excluding Chuck Lorre shows)
Now THAT’s comedy!
(Note to NBC, whatever shows CBS dumps…PICK THEM UP. Even mediocre CBS ratings blow yours out of the water!)
You can say a lot of things about “Rules of Engagement,” but it’s always funny.
I’m beginning to feel this might be the last season. Not because of the order cut, not because CBS’s continued mistrust and unfair treatment of the show, but I’m pretty sure both Patrick Warburton and David Spade have probably had enough of the mistreatment ( Patrick already called bullshit when it was supposed to air Saturdays originally)and probably find a way out of their contracts and that’ll effectively end the show
No respect for this CBS. This reminds me how ABC would treat the show “COACH” however it wasn’t as bad as CBS treat “RULES”.
If the contract is up this year for the show thn NBC should try to get it. Now “Rules” could never start off a night of comedy however it would serve as “Slot” filler behind “The OFfice” or “Up all Night”
It should get an increase not a cut? This show is is so under appreciated
Owning failures isnt a positive thing. And CBS co-produces Rules and gets syndication profits which makes this that much more perplexing.
HTBAG got zero promotion.
hate that show, hope it gets cancelled
As a bloke from England, US television has always baffled me. A series gets broken up so many times during its run and programmes get moved or cancelled after two episodes and now they plan to cut a proven a well watched programme like “rules” and replace it with a new comedy. Very dissappointed. Rules saved their skin after it had been shunted out to Saturdays only to bring them big ratings on Thursdays. Shame on CBS and i hope it backfires on them. Long live Rules of Engagement!
I love Rules, just got finished watching, laugh out loud funny. What monkey in a suit at CBS made this bone-head decision?! And to replace with a Rob Schneider Show? CBS you suck! Who do I petition to keep this show?
I love the show and I am 65. It makes me laugh !!!! The writers are creative and funny!
Why would they cancel this show?
Love Rules of Engagement. Laugh-out-loud funny; great cast. You would think that would be something to hold onto with both hands.
Figures – CBS does this a lot – the show gets great ratings, but they mess with it each year. They really don’t care about the viewing audience.
