EXCLUSIVE: Steven Soderbergh, who just directed Channing Tatum in Magic Mike, is eyeing him for the lead in The Man From U.N.C.L.E., I’m told. Both of those films are at Warner Bros. Soderbergh has been looking for an actor to replace George Clooney, who bowed out because he’s having surgery and wasn’t up to the stunt work. That shouldn’t be a problem for Tatum. No offer yet, but let’s see how this plays out.

Tatummhas the same problem Timberlake has–zero appeal to the male fanbase that actually makes these kinds of movies into hits. He might as well cast Robert Pattinson.
Soderbergh: this movie works best if you cast an actor males under 35 are dying to see do an interesting, big budget action role. Give Jon Hamm, Brad Cooper, Dave Chappelle and Tobey Maguire a serious look for either Solo or Ilya.
Hamm would be AWESOME as the Man. But if you’re basing it on actors under-35 that’s reaching.
Why does he need to be younger than 35? Audiences want a hero they like.
Hamm fits that.
He’s proven himself time and time again as both a lead (TV-wise) and as a comedic performer with chops so that speaks across the boards.
I think our “average American” has the idea of a top notch “spy” being more Bond-like (experienced) than younger so I think Hamm would be a kick-a$$ way to go.
Then (after 3 movies) let him retire and hand it off to whomever the new “Bourne” is.
You need to re-read the post you are commenting on. He said “an actor males under 35 are dying to see”, meaning the demographic group of males under 35 years old that comprise the audience. He was not referring to an actor of 35 or under.
Chaning Tatum?! Please, don`t.
If he’s playing a log or a lump of wood or some timber then YES!
If he has to speak & move then NO!.
I didn’t think it was possible to be less interested in this movie.
Oh no. Now I know how G.I. JOE fans felt. Damn you and your stupid bad back, Clooney.
I’m afraid you are right. At first I thought Clooney too old for the role, but I’ve seen very recent pictures of him and I am so sorry to conclude that Clooney is simply born to play the role of Solo. Who ever they cast, I just don’t think I’ll be able to stop myself from thinking, “this should have been Clooney.”
This guys a ZERO! No appeal at all. I thought Soderberg was retiring. Please hurry and do it now!
I am still waiting for someone to get Channing Tatum, Carol Channing and Tatum O’Neal onscreen together. It will be better than DeNiro and Pacino in Heat.
Seriously, all jokes aside…Hollywood can no longer complain that attendance is low & that box office sucks.
Self-fulfilling prophecy. Boom!
Where is Channing Tatum’s talent….is he really wowing director’s in the casting trailer with his master thespian skills?
Jon Hamm is a great idea. Make him an offer!
Remember when Clooney bailed out of Wild, Wild West and was replaced by Kevin Kline. Maybe George saw the script for this one, too.
I never liked the Tatum until I saw him interviewed on Kimmel, and now I feel like a bastard for resenting him. He does seem like good people, so maybe a nice guy finished first. Or maybe he’s sleeping with somebody.
Tatum, not “the” Tatum. Although I can’t name any other Tatums offhand, so maybe Channing really is the Tatum top-dog.
Ok, ok, let’s not rush to judgement. Maybe Steven knows something that we don’t since he has been working so closely with him on things we have yet to see (anyone remember Clooney before “Out of Sight”)? Maybe what this movie actually needs to make it pop IS a younger, more surprising direction. I’m surprised but also excited at this possibility.
Annnnd there goes any chance of this project being remotely worthwhile. Next!
Charisma and charm, if you are not sure what those are check the dictionary Mr. Soderbergh.
I second Jon Hamm. If not, wasn’t Matt Bomer in Magic Mike? Right age and look for Solo right there.
I would hate to see a half-assed job done on this. Just stick it in turn around and try again later!
Soderbergh can get a great performance out of him. Don’t forget – nobody had much faith in Clooney as an actor until OUT OF SIGHT. Channing’s part is small in HAYWIRE, but he does some really good work. The guy has talent. He just needs to work with the right directors.
Well Channing Tatum is not exactly comparable IN ANY WAY to George Clooney – even before Out Of Sight.
Chris Pine and Paul Bettany? Or, if we’re going younger, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anton Yelchin? And, of course, Judi Dench as… oh, right, she’s already playing that part.
Channing Tatum has his place in the Hollywood firmament. There’s appealing sensitivity that goes with the brutish good looks. But he seems all kinds of wrong in a stylish espionage film. There’s no savoir faire in his onscreen persona.
This could be the worst casting decision of the year and smells like a bomb from the start. Get “The Gap Band” to play at the premiere! ” You dropped the bomb on me, yeah baby!!!”
Channing Tatum has all emotions of a number 2 pencil eraser.
I know this one has been in the works for a while, but man, I just can’t stand the fact that so many projects are being remade.
Hmmmmmm….let me see:
Channing Tatum for George Clooney.
Tatum instead of Clooney.
Tatum not Clooney.
It’s a joke right.
That just changes the whole dynamic of the character and duo. There are very few tv series to movie remakes that I’ve actually liked but I was a fan of The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and kinda looking forward to this. Tatum just doesn’t fit. Too bad.
Margo Channing + Tatum O’Neal = Channing Tatum. Another generic actor.
Bingo, thank you George – this just went from flop to hit! 50 year old women only carry so much clout
Well, at least he’ll finally know how to spell it.
I don’t have anything against Channing personally but the thought of that casting makes me cry, “Uncle”.
His casting is obviously a conspiracy by THRUSH to sabotage the movie and attain world domination.
