Today will be Chelsea Clinton’s first day of work as an NBC News special correspondent. The daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton will handle pieces that NBC Nightly News will use for its “Making A Difference” segment that focuses on people who do volunteer work, as well as segments for Rock Center With Brian Williams. Reportedly, she’ll donate her NBC salary to the Clinton Foundation and George Washington University Hospital. Hiring Chelsea may further fuel GOP claims that NBC is soft on Democrats, but NBC already employs Jenna Bush and Meghan McCain. This is an intriguing career choice for Chelsea because she has spent much of her adult life stiff-arming the press: When she made public appearances during her mother’s presidential campaign in 2008, Chelesa refused to answer questions from reporters — although she did respond to those from audience members. She also seems to have a full plate outside of NBC: After working at a management consulting company and a hedge fund, Clinton is going for a doctorate degree at Oxford University. She works at New York University, the Clinton Foundation, and the Clinton Global Initiative. And in September she joined the board of Barry Diller’s IAC. Here’s NBC’s release:
November 14, 2011 — New York, N.Y. — Chelsea Clinton is teaming up with “Rock Center with Brian Williams” and “NBC Nightly News” as a Special Correspondent, the network announced today. Clinton’s role with the shows and the network will be to highlight stories within the “Making a Difference” franchise. “Making a Difference” segments have a history of profiling organizations and individuals who represent the best of what works in the United States and around the world, frequently emphasizing stories about everyday people doing extraordinary things. Clinton’s dedication to public service, solution-based advocacy and focus on empowering people across the country and around the globe resonates with the purpose and content of “Making a Difference.” Her position with NBC News will still allow Clinton to continue her work with the Clinton Foundation and her studies in parallel.
“Chelsea is a remarkable woman who will be a great addition to NBC News. Given her vast experiences, it’s as though Chelsea has been preparing for this opportunity her entire life,” said Steve Capus, President of NBC News. “We are proud she will be bringing her considerable, unique talents and dedication to NBC News.”
“Our Making a Difference segments have become a signature of the broadcast. They adhere to a simple goal of highlighting the good works being done across the country and around the world,” said Brian Williams, Anchor and Managing Editor of Nightly News and Rock Center. “Chelsea Clinton has led a remarkable life. She possesses an uncommon understanding of humanity — on city streets, across this country and around the globe. We are so excited she’s joining us to tell the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
“People who imagine and implement solutions to challenges in their own lives, in their communities, in our country and in our world have always inspired me,” said Clinton. “I hope telling stories through “Making a Difference” – as in my academic work and non-profit work – will help me to live my grandmother’s adage of “Life is not about what happens to you, but about what you do with what happens to you, ” Clinton continued. “I have long been impressed that Brian and his team at NBC place consistent importance on sharing stories of empowerment that in turn, help empower other people and families. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this tradition.”

Thank goodness. There are few true reporters anymore with the exception of the reporters at Deadline and CBS News. Because of Chelsea’s personal experience, I am positive that she will put her own mark on reporting.
hey, why did I bother going to Journalism school and working for years in tertiary markets?
She rotates superficially through various careers, treating it all like a series of internships. What’s next, a gig as a hospital administrator or maybe working at the Red Cross?
My dear, don’t be mad. You sound like a 99%er.
“She” you refer to must belong to the other 1%er.
Think of it as grooming of a princess, taking internships but highly paid.
She is just working in the “mama and papa shop” family business?
If you left your family business for a better job, perhaps “she” didn’t find anything better.
It is sad that CGI needs her donation.
How lame is that her debut was an interview of her mom in her dad’s shop?
99%ers seem to need some good journalism. Your chance?
Karen: Maybe you missed this, but 240 odd years ago, we revolted against a standing aristocracy. I have nothing against her personally. But she got the job because – in Steve Capus’ words – because she was “kicking the tires” on her career – not because she earned it, or studied for it. Wonderful. This is 1% nepotism as its worst. It’s bad for NBC News, bad for less-privileged kids who actually want to be journalists, and bad for the basic founding principle that our country is a meritocracy. Somewhere, there’s a young Walter Cronkite, Edward R. Murrow, or even a young Jill Abramson or Maureen Dowd who didn’t get this job — and we’re all poorer for it.
Karen: It is not for reporters to put any mark on the news. A good reporter reports the facts pure and simple. It is the ability to get the facts, that makes a good reporter. I am sick and tired of reporters personal spin on the news…..The people make their decisions based on the facts not the other way around. As for her salary, you can bet she will get her money after it has been washed through her daddy’s “Charitable Foundation”. It will at least be a huge tax write off for her by going this route. I just feel sorry for the hard working people who were passed over by Chelsa after putting in years at NBC.
How wonderful to see her thriving. She is first class. Too bad her mother wasn’t The President….
The woman is being groomed for a senate / presidential run down the road. It’s interesting to watch the “back story” fill out.
Seriously, what the hell is Chelsea Clinton doing being on the board of IAC? Please someone tell me.
You have to be a member of the 1% to know the full story.
Well said – this is nepotism at it’s finest. Youngens take heed: All you need on your resume to succeed these days is your parent’s accomplishments.
Hope you’re dad was productive… mine wasn’t…
Chelsea to NBC News, what a surprise, NBC hiring a democrat. I’m sure she will end up on MSNBC and all the other Obama loving NBC News shows.
Ok Anon…tell us the story. brcause this is the last person I’d ever listen to in regards to the news…and I’M A DEMOCRAT.What is she doing on the board??????
People would like Chelsea better if her mother didn’t fail at being President.
When I look at her, all I can say is…ew. Just, ew.
I’m a staunch Democrat and even I find this annoying. Also Luke Russert.
Make the nepotism stop already! God.
If she had any integrity she would take a lower level position and wait a couple of years before really using her parent’s position.
It might even be different if she actually had a journalism degree.
She isn’t the first person, and won’t be the last, to use her family and connections to jump over others and get an easier ride, but she’s too much.
Who cares…Someone needs to telll NBC it is not supposed to be a niche net. NBC is so far in the dumper they will need to change the extreme lean to the left to attract a broarder base of viewers. This ain’t it, but who cares?
Hires like this degrade NBC News as well as all broadcast journalists. Put some time in at a local affiliate the way that Maria Shriver did. And announced on the same day that we learn that her father will be co-founding a hedge fund. Wall Street Reform and completely unearned media celebrity cooked in Hillary’s old Easy Bake Oven set to “synergy.” And if she’s donating her salary to her parents’ foundation why is it being referred to as a job? I’m sure she’s a nice kid but call it for what it is NBC : free political publicity for the Clintons. Even old Joe Kennedy did not have that much gall and lack of boundaries and that’s sayin’ something. Please call her newscast segments “Making a Difference for the Clintons.” Feel the same way about Bristol Palin by the way. It’s no different. Just a high brow variation of the same theme.
NBC = nothing but children (of famous people)
Little Bush
Little Russert
Little Clinton
Little journalism experience between the three of these hires.
Must be nice to have powerful parents and be talentless. Chelsea has no personality whatsoever.
First the Bush twins, now Amy Carter, oops that Clinton chick.
Who’s next Sasha. Good luck. Make that money. Make mama proud.
So Princess Chelsea will be asking question but no one dare ask her a question or they will banished to oblivion.
Maybe someone should tell the poor girl, no one watches NBC. I certainly don’t!
This is a woman with contempt for the media and she is hired to be on NBC news? Just another example of the corporate and celebrity influence on journalism. Bush daughter, McCain daughter, Luke Russert, and now Clinton. Just waiting for Malia Obama to be hired as an NBC kid journalist.
Maybe America is a meritocracy after all.
