After lengthy negotiations, E! has signed signature star Chelsea Handler in a rich new two-year deal. Under the pact, which I hear is worth $25 million, Handler will continue as host and executive producer of her E! late-night talk show Chelsea Lately though 2014. (The comedian’s previous contract covers her services on the show through 2012.) She will also develop and produce shows via her production company, Borderline Amazing Prods, which will have a first-look deal with E! and NBCUniversal.
Since Chelsea Lately’s July 2007 launch, it has grown into a formidable late-night talk show franchise, reigning as the highest-rated and most-watched late-night talker among women 18-34. The series recently delivered its highest-rated and most-watched telecast ever on October 10, averaging nearly 1.8 million total viewers at 11 PM.
Chelsea Lately also spawned an off-shoot, the Borderline Amazing-produced After Lately, which returns for a second season November 27. “Chelsea is an extraordinary talent whose smart, clever, no-holds-barred point of view has clearly been embraced by viewers,” said Suzanne Kolb, President, E! “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Chelsea as we build on the success of Chelsea Lately, which has become the late-night destination for young adults, and collaborate with Borderline Amazing Prods on developing even more hit shows.” Added Handler, “It’s a great time for women in comedy, and it’s a great time to have real breasts.” CAA-repped Handler, along with her Borderline Amazing Prods partner Tom Brunelle, will continue to serve as executive producers for Chelsea Lately and After Lately. Handler is already active on both the cable and broadcast side of NBCU. In addition to her growing portfolio on E!, she executive produces with Brunelle and recurs on NBC’s upcoming comedy series Are You There, Chelsea? which is based on her books. Post-merger, E! too is looking to get into scripted programming.

Only 1.8 million people watch her show and she not only gets that much money but all the publicity that she does? Wow. As ba as Anderson Cooper whose ratings are always in the toilet yet gets treated as if he’s not only relevant in the media but as if he’s a hit.
Welcome to the Age of Diminished Expectations!
Not sure if you’re aware of how grammatically incorrect most of that post was? It really discounts the credibility of your opinion. On a lighter note, Chelsea handler averaging 1.8 million is pretty impressive for late night TV, so it’s apparent that you don’t know much about the industry and what are good versus bad ratings. Whoopsie, there goes your credibility again. As for Anderson Cooper? He is one of few journalists who reports for the story and not to sell to advertisers. The topics covered on AC360 are more often than not serious and otherwise under-covered topics in the news. If he wants a day time show, let him have it … it’s just more work for him and clearly makes some people happy.
Maybe next time around you’ll think before you post?
Most likely she won’t.
I still don’t see what’s special about her. To me she is not funny and mostly irritating. She has had numerous shows on E! and each have been lame. Then again, she is on E!
The NBC show based on her books looks awful.
Derby, the definition of numerous is “great in number;many.” Chelsea has only had three shows on the E! Network. The Chelsea Handler Show came first and was reformatted to Chelsea Lately, which has a spin -off called After Lately. That’s three shows about the same premise and they’ve been pretty damn successful. I’d say the fact that there are three is a testament to their quality.
E pays in the same currency as all the others
Great news…imo Chelsea is one of the funniest women in show biz right now. Smart move E!
She needs to hire a stylist…
She is very successful, hilarious, and more entertaining to the 18-30 demographic than Letterman and Leno.. thats how she gets the publicity she does. The facts do lie, if she wasn’t worth the $25M, E! would unload that sinking ship. Just because she doesn’t appeal to you doesn’t mean she doesn’t appeal to loads of others, Dorothy
The facts **don’t** lie.
Oh, puh-leeze! Girl got famous by dating her boss who in turn gave her a TV show at his network — she even brags about it, just watch some of her clips online.
I saw Chelsea Handler do “stand-up” with a girlfriend when we got free tickets from work. Good lord, she was completely drunk/incoherent and read “jokes” (i.e. unfunny, mean insults) from note cards. She cursed a lot while driving home the point that she doesn’t like blacks and particularly Asians. That’s not what I’d call comedic genius.
Handler caters to trashy people like Jerry Springer does. That doesn’t mean she has talent.
Getting 1.8 million viewers isn’t anything to hoot about. That’s nothing compared Jay Leno’s 3.6 million viewers or David Letterman’s 3.5 million viewers (10/31/2011-11/04/2011). Her performace at the MTV VMAs was abysmal because she lacks real talent and more importantly, because she doesn’t have widespread appeal.
Say what you want about Chelsea with her VMAs but she drew its biggest audience for any telecast on the network since 2002.
@Say…: Actually, viewers tuned in to see their favorite musicians and the musical acts. This was the year after Kanye West went ape nuts on Taylor Swift — I know some people who caught the VMAs just to see if he’d act out again. They didn’t watch to see Chelsea Handler, who was completely terribad. Here’s an example. When people tuned in to watch the Super Bowl in 2004, they did so to see the game, not Janet Jackson or Justin Timberlake. It’s funny that you tried to lie about something that’s so obvious.
Not a big fan of her comedy, but she’s clearly got a hell of a team and business skills to make her a powerful businesswoman. Book deals, spinoffs, network sitcoms, comedy tours, and millions of dollars all from a measly 30-minute gossip show.
A marginal talent signs a deal with a marginal network.
As soon as her primetime series tanks, Chelsea’s 5 “minutes of relevancy” will fade. Good timing on the part of her representatives to get this deal done behind her very temporary heat.
5 Minutes of relevancy? she’s been popular since 2006 .. and I’m pretty sure with three best selling books, she’s not going anywhere. You should do some research.
Stephen Huvane AKA Alex, don’t you ever take a break from harassing bloggers on behalf of your clients. You sure are the hardest working publicist in Hollywood because between Chelsea and Anniston, I don’t know where you find time for your other clients.
You are aware that this is a 30 minute “late night” CABLE show!? 1.1 million viewers is outstanding for these credentials.
Congrads to Chelsea, I think it’s that old, old issue we can’t get away from; male vs female. She works as hard maybe harder but is not appreciated or rewarded like her male counterparts
Testament to the writing.
I’m sure her staff and crew will get a big raise too, right???
This from the same network that brought us (and got hoodwinked by) the Kardashians!
The only reason this show has any ratings is b/c people fall asleep with their TV’s on E! Channel so they don’t wake up to a horror/anything scary in the middle of the night.
This show is so bad it’s funny
So many negative comments from people that must be jealous they don’t make $25 million over two years. Great job Chelsea! Keep entertaining us!!!
Not appreciated?? 25 million for 2 more years is NOT appreciated?!?!
I’ll never know whether she’s funny because I can never get past what a miserable, shallow opportunist she must be.
Has she EVER said anything remotely funny?
Seriously?
Did the E! execs see her host the MTV awards?
Yes. When she claimed to be under 40.
Occupy Hollywood! 25 mil to be mean spirited and rude?!?! I guess mean girls are more important than teachers…
Sexy. Funny. Sexy. Funny. Clever. Outrageous. Audacious. Necessary. Love her LOTS!
I watched her on and off for a few weeks and grew bored.
Handler’s style — whatever it is, is extremely grating and wears thin quickly. The schtick where she constantly insults the midget seemed very cruel.
I find it interesting that women embrace her? Maybe it’s some sort of female empowerment thing?
Go Alex.
One more nail in the coffin for the entertainment industry. Maybe people will get out more and actually have a social life.
Alex is Chelsea Handler’s simpering lapdog right? Obsessed much? LOL!
“Post-merger, E! too is looking to get into scripted programming.”
They already have scripted programming – “Keeping Up with the Kardashians”, “Kendra” and “Holly’s World”.
I find her, the show and all the cast of comedians hilarious.
