This is a pretty big get for CBS, which has been trying to lure Elisabeth Shue for years. The actress, an Oscar nominee for Leaving Las Vegas, is joining the cast of CBS’ veteran crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation as the new female lead opposite Ted Danson. Shue will play the newest CSI, fresh off an anger management course, amid rumors that D.B. Russell (Danson) fired her when she worked for him in Seattle. She will succeed Marg Helgenberger, who is departing her full-time gig on CSI in January but is expected to return for occasional guest sports, reprising her role as Catherine Willows. Shue, who will make her first appearance in the Feb. 15 episode, will be a new regular on CSI, her first major series role since she co-starred on the short-lived 1984 ABC drama Call To Glory, produced by Paramount Television, the predecessor to CSI producer CBS TV Studios. Shue’s biggest TV stint since then had been a two-episode arc on HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, though she has been getting pilot offers by the networks every year, with CBS particularly aggressive in its pursuit of the Hollow Man and The Karate Kid actress. The casting of Shue completes a lead overhaul on CSI, now in its 12th season. The series, which started off with William Petersen and Helgenberger as the stars and had Helgenberger subsequently partner with Laurence Fishburne and Ted Danson, will now have 2 new leads in Danson, who joined the series at the beginning of the season, and Shue. For CBS, getting Shue and Danson marks the second time this year that the network has been able to land big-name actors as the new leads of aging series. It first did it in May, with Ashton Kutcher replacing Charlie Sheen on comedy Two And A Half Men. After 11 seasons as CBS’ 9 PM anchor on Thursday, CSI moved to Wednesdays this fall, shoring up the 10 PM slot. It most recently averaged 2.6/7 in 18-49 and 10.5 million viewers, up a tenth in the demo from the previous week, to top the hour in 18-49 (tied with ABC’s Revenge) and total viewers. Shue, repped by CAA and Management 360, stars in the upcoming Relativity Media film House at the End of the Street and is currently filming Fox 2000’s Of Men And Mavericks.

Interesting decision by CBS. But I think I’d be more interested in a new show with her.
wow, just wow. Cannot get better than this. Was sad to hear marg was leaving, but this more than makes up for it. one of the best actresses period, deserved the oscar for Leaving las vegas, glad she’s returning to vegas!!!
This is good.
Yet another reason to tune in. First Ted, now Elisabeth. Welcome to the team.
Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic…
Seriously?? I don’t watch CSI and am not such a procedural fan, but I would hardly liken CSI to the Titanic. Unless the Titanic had sailed for 75 years, carried millions of passengers, and made its owners billions of dollars.
Pedantic Pedro: Comes with free useless information.
Awesome. Hopefully this other lead casting change will give CSI another creative boost of energy.
This is a brilliant casting choice and gives CSI even more new life. More reasons to tune in and many more seasons to come! Well done CSI! This is awesome!
The only CSI news I want to see is news of cancellation. All three series. Junk TV and all the worse for looking like very old and TIRED junk TV.
@moretears – it really is too bad that a creative show like CSI tries to grow and get better but has to hear from burrowed in the mud knuckleheads like you. I personally applaud anyone’s effort to improve, to reinvent itself, instead of just same old, same old. You need to open your mind before you open your mouth.
Honey, this show was tired from ep one.
This is a big disappointment. I’m surprised she couldn’t get something developed for her, I stead of glomming onto a tired old franchise. Next we’ll hear she will star in the remake of Cocktail.
How about a remake of “Adventures in Babysitting” with her as the mother?
Fascinating. Am very sad to be losing Helgenberger, but look forward to Shue. What I don’t get, however, is the need that CBS seems to have for “name” actors. As much as I like Lawrence Fishburne as an actor, I feel his character bogged down the show.
It’s sorta of like in sports where a franchise has a great core of players, yet still feels they need to shell out millions of dollars for a super-star that often disrupts the existing chemistry.
I love the existing ensemble. My favorite episodes are the “lab rat” eps. The producers of CSI have taken “minor” characters like Eric Szmanda and Robert David Hall and evolved them into essential parts of the show.
Was this article written by a 25 year old? Any article on Shue should make mention of her role in Leaving Las Vegas, an incredibly underrated film in which Shue stole the show.
Note the reference in the article to Shue in “Leaving Las Vegas”.
Wow… way to revive an aging series !! I really like Marg, but Elizabeth is fantastic and I look forward to seeing her work with Ted.
Congrats, Elizabeth!
Well, Matt…
It takes so much to make a show and have it succeed past 13 episodes these days.
That would be a HUGE gamble with questionable results. Meanwhile CSI is an established hit show and usually the most globally watched show in the world.
Doing a new show with her compared to adding her to the stable CSI would be pointless and not very good Hollywood $ense.
“occasional guest sports”? What exactly would those be on CSI?
I knew something was up when that sheriff lady offered the character Catherin Willows a big job in D.C in last weeks show.
Well 1st she did Piranha, so i knew TV would come next.
A decent actress, yes. And proof that talent doesn’t evaporate at 40. But “a pretty big get” that a network has been “trying to lure”?? What does that even mean? “Leaving Las Vegas” was 16 years ago. “Hollow Man” was 11. She was good in each, but both were hits by virtue of their leading men. Lovely Shue has never, ever carried a hit movie. Hasn’t even been near a popular one in a decade, despite 11 films. And there were 7 between “Vegas” and “Hollow” that were likewise ignored. A nice bit of casting, but where exactly is the get? She was probably circling the Radford lot in her car. Why does every bit of news in this town have to be written as though it’s auditioning to be a cover-line of Entertainment Weekly — hook-y without meaning???
This stinks. Getting a has been from a 16 year old show. And the other series was 11 years old aand waht has she done since, nothing. I agree totally with Eddie. They got the wrong Elizabeth it should have been Vassey not Shue. Vassey is familiar with the show and was a very popular character on the show. Her and Wallace Langham had an off the charts chemistry together. It would have been easy to bring her back and because of the way she left (thanks to the writers) and have Hodges having manned up a little treat her differently and work slowly back to what they had. Mendelsohn and Donahue have ruined the show. Get Back Shankar and Rambo as producers and send the other two out the door. Funny that Wendy goes to Portland and Shue plays someone he fired from there then hires her back! And Liz Vassey has always said she would like to come back and probably at a reduced salary.
But oh no not at CBS. They are always ignoring their fan base and letting everyone lknow how smart they are. Look at the ratings folks. I have kept track for a season and a half and have proof that when they let Liz Vassey go (after telling her she would be back), and hiring on Fishburn, the ratings started dropping like a brick in the water. Wake up, bring back some of the old characters, even some of the Lab Rats, get Shankar and Rambo back, and then see what happens.
I fell in love with her after Adventures in Babysitting…
I’ve never understood why her career didn’t take off after Leaving Las Vegas. She’s hot, can act rings around most other stars, no substance abuse issues (that have been made public, anyway)…is she just too private to play the tabloid game or something?
Adventures in CSI-Ing…..
I gave up on CSI years ago(unless I watch CSI Miami for a laugh – what? It’s not a comedy?)even before Petersen left.
I told myself I’d give it another try with Sam Malone, but now it’s a Shue in.
She makes me sign with glee, and not the annoying kids singing and dancing kind.
So once again CBS screws Jorja Fox – she should be getting the lead slot after Marg Helgenberger leaves, but no, not at CBS.
I like Shue, but I don’t get that either. I could actually understand Ted Danson’s character – I don’t think George Eads is the ideal actor to be the star of the show. But really, Jorja Fox is a great actress, and she could totally be the lead one. With Elisabeth Harnois as a female CSI, I don’t think they needed to bring in a new one. And then, there goes Elisabeth Shue on the credits first (no offense to her, but it makes me feel kinda sorry for the rest of the cast). But no, not at CBS.
Her 1984 ABC drama series was Call to Glory, not Call of Duty.
probably more advertising for the game!
CSI is barely beating Revenge in 18-49 and even though it still has over 10 million viewers is not nearly the show it was.
Now Shue will be like “examine this fingerprint!” “Look! There’s a hair!” “We have your DNA! Just Admit it!”
Now this is an actress with incredible goodwill from an entire generation, thanks to her work in Adventures in Babysitting, Karate Kid and Cocktail…and she showed good humor playing in the Piranha pool last year. Team Shue!
Love her!
