My former colleague Adam Dawtrey had a good scoop about Harry Potter director David Yates helming a feature version of the long running BBC science fiction series Doctor Who. That’s going to take several years to get a script, and he’ll need a job in the meantime. Warner Bros, which employed Yates on four Potter films including the finale, is trying hard to tempt him to direct Imitation Game, the script that the studio paid seven figures to buy last month. The Graham Moore-scripted drama is about Alan Turing, the genius and WWII hero who poisoned himself with a cyanide laced apple after being criminally prosecuted for being a homosexual. Studio has been waiting weeks to hear if Yates will bite. Stay tuned.

I think Yates is a talented director, but if he chooses to direct Imitation Game, I hope he works with a different editor and composer. I’m not really a fan of Mark Day and Nicholas Hooper. I doubt he’ll ditch the two of them though, so I hope Imitation Game gets offered to someone else.
I’ve actually been fortunate enough to read the script for Imitation Game. As long as there aren’t too many changes made, it’s gonna be an awesome movie pretty much no matter who directs it. But I am a big fan of Yates; he’s one of the best working directors and always manages to bring out the best performances in his actors. I’m psyched for Imitation Game.
in first – i see this serial 7 year ago. in second – film will be good if he nothing be change and they will found good actor in Dr. Who role.
A Dr. Who feature is long overdue. This is a long-running favorite in the UK, and with select American audiences. Maybe a treatment in the interim could be a big-budget mini-series on premium cable, like what Starz did with Torchwood earlier this year.
Many Torchwood fans were not enamored by the Starz move, and some American audiences shied away from the bi-sexual attributes of the male lead. But Torchwood is only a recent spin-off of the Who legacy and should not dictate Who’s potentials.
I, for one, would love to see what Yates or someone else could do with Dr. Who and a sizeable budget.
As long as the Who movie isn’t developed for the Ritalin generation like the TV show.
(Maybe Eric Roberts would like a second shot at the role.)
Not to nitpick, but it should be pointed out that the series title is “Doctor Who” and not “Dr. Who”. This is important because it gives the impression that “Who” is the Doctor’s name, when it isn’t.
Anyway, I’m excited about the idea of a Yates franchise for this series, if it could be realised on such an epic fantasy scale as Harry Potter and well cast/written, it could be huge with endless story possibilities. I’m even okay with it being a total reimagining, as for example I can love and appreciate the Sherlock Holmes books, BBC series and RDJ films equally as separate things.
But because rumours of a DW film float to the surface every year or so, I was wondering if Deadline could do a little of it’s own investigating and find out for us loyal fans whether this one is true?
1) It’s ‘Doctor’ Who. Not Dr. Who.
2) NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo *gasps for breath* OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..o…o…o..o…..oooooo.oooo…….oooo…..ooooo…oo…oh!
