EXCLUSIVE: HBO’s drama pilot The Corrections continues to assemble a stellar cast. In his first regular TV series gig, Ewan McGregor has been tapped to co-star in the Noah Baumbach/Scott Rudin project, joining previously cast Chris Cooper and Dianne Wiest. Based on Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed book, The Corrections revolves around the troubles of a Midwestern couple (Cooper and Wiest), and their three adult children as they trace their lives from the mid-20th century to “one last Christmas” together near the turn of the millennium. McGregor will play Chip, the middle child, a Marxist academic who lost his tenure-track position over an affair with a student and now works for a Lithuanian crime boss defrauding American investors. Baumbach and Franzen co-wrote the adaptation, with Baumbach set to direct the pilot. The two are executive producing with Rudin. Trainspotting and Star Wars star McGregor, who recently starred in Beginners, will next be seen in Salmon Fishing In The Yemen, Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire and Bryan Singer’s Jack the Giant Killer. UTA-repped McGregor’s only previous series stint was a guest appearance on ER, which earned him an Emmy nomination in 1997.

Love Ewan (his film, BEGINNERS, was one of the most underrated gems of the year), but his yank accent is awful… playing such an integral part of an American family… just hoping the accent won’t bring one out.
Hern, thank you for bringing up his American accent problem. People are so quick to point out American actors doing horrible English accents, but very rarely the media ( or other people ) will point out the British thespians’ hideous US accents. Colin Firth’s American accent is atrocious.
Totally agree about BEGINNERS – thought it was one of the best films this year that’s surprisingly overlooked (is it the gay theme? do people just not care or still too homophobic to watch a great film with gay characters? WTF) It reminded me of ANNIE HALL in it’s creativity. I think Mike Mills is a filmmaker to watch.
Ewan is great, love love love INGLORIOUS BASTERDS’ Melanie Laurent and Plummer deserves a supporting Oscar nom (although I have to go with Nolte in WARRIOR for the win).
Perfect casting.
Um… has Noah Baumbach ever made anything that is even remotely watchable or made money?
I guess you don’t consider the Oscar-nominated “The Squid and the Whale” watchable…
Lifetime gross — $7,372,734
So, no I don’t.
Um, so you ONLY watch movies that make a boatload of cash? Must not see many great films, bro.
Actually, my point was that apparently I’m not alone in thinking that The Squid and the Whale was unwatchable, as so few people went to see it. You are certainly entitled to like the movie.
Yeah, but by that logic Transformers: Rise of the Fallen is a superior film.
You just got served Eddie kiddo.
That’s actually quite good for an indie film with that cast with a budget of $1.5 million.
I’m sure plenty more have seen it on DVD and cable due to the awards and great word of mouth.
In my opinion, it’s one of the best films on divorce.
Why don’t you watch it and then judge. Baumbach is perfect for HBO and this project.
I have watched it. I found it unbelievable and dull. And before you ask, yes my parents got divorced. Now let’s talk about his other films — “Margot at the Wedding” and “Greenberg” — yikes.
So… you haven’t seen Squid & The Whale then, right?
Ed, you’re right. Glad to see I am not the only one thinking NB is one of the luckiest guy in the business…
I remember thinking when I read the book 10 years ago that Catherine Keener would have been perfect to play the sister, but she’s probably too old now.
Stana Katic? Anna Friel? Cate Blanchett?
I hate the book. It reminded me of a bad episode of All in the Family w/o the likable characters.
So box office=watchable? Huh.
I’ve had it all wrong for years. Thanks man. 1pm show of Breaking Dawn here I come!
This just keeps getting better and better. Chris Cooper and Ewan Mc-Bloody-Gregor!? F@k yeah
.
Yeah Ewan McGregor’s American accent is only surpassed by Liam Neeson’s in horribleness.
Loved the Squid and The Whale but Margo at the Wedding and Greenberg were awful.
MARGOT wasn’t awful, it was just filled with hateful characters–there was no one to identify with–but it was superbly made.
I actually enjoyed GREENBERG a lot. Living in LA, I thought it was quite funny.
I sure loved KICKING AND SCREAMING and MR. JEALOUSY.
His early, funny stuff.
Ever since he hooked his wagon to Stiller’s star, I find his films unbearable.
But Ed, didn’t he have a big fat hit with TOWER HEIST?
I can understand the ‘he’s never made money’ argument, as I’m sure there has been more than 30 million dollars invested in his films, which have returned very, very little. After awhile, one gets shipped off to mumble-core-ville, doesn’t one?
Noah didn’t have anything to do with TOWER HEIST.
Isn’t GREENBERG his only Stiller film? Don’t understand the hooked the wagon comment.
If anything, he hooked his wagon to Wes Anderson and it’s been a brilliant combo giving us THE LIFE AQUATIC and FANTASTIC MR. FOX (co-writer on both).
Stiller was also the first actor to become attached to Baumbach’s next feature WHILE WE’RE YOUNG.
I hereby amend P. T. Barnum’s famous maxim to “There’s a sucker born every nanosecond” in honor of Ed.
Dang. Gonna have to re-up HBO – had to drop it to pay spawn’s college tuition (the list of what weve gone without is long and painful). This sounds too good to wait for the boxset at Dollar General!
So no American actors could do this part? Ewan MacGregor was good in certain films, but lets be honest, he has an AWFUL American accent. An actor for every part and a part for every actor…
Ewan shouldn’t do this. He has an international movie career. Seems like a half baked decision. I don’t buy the hype on the project. Baumbach is a polarizing director…hope Rudin will bring out the best in him.
I’m worried this will be the most depressing show ever made. After I put down that book it took me a while to recover. Not sure I want to tune in weekly despite being a fan of almost everybody involved.
