Here’s a first look at Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, the witchy central character in Great Expectations, Mike Newell’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel. Miss Havisham is an iconic character over here in Britain: an embittered spinster who sits in her mouldering mansion still wearing the wedding dress she wore when she was jilted at the altar; she has trained her adopted daughter Estella to break men’s hearts just as her heart was broken. Bonham Carter co-stars opposite Ralph Fiennes as escaped convict Magwitch. Producer Stephen Woolley tells me the Oscar nominee is playing Miss Havisham at the same age she is in Dickens novel — previous incarnations by Charlotte Rampling, Anne Bancroft and, most memorably, Martita Hunt in David Lean’s version played her much older. New York-based Unison Films is searching for a U.S. deal for the film, which Lionsgate UK will release in fall 2012. Hanway Films, which is handling all other territories, will show footage in Berlin. Newell will finish shooting the BBC Films-backed project by Christmas. Robbie Coltrane, Sally Hawkins and David Walliams (Little Britain) co-star, with Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as Pip, the young hero of the story.

I adore Helena Bonham Carter.
Isn’t that just what Helena wears around the house anyway?
Good to see fresh, original ideas finally getting some budget.
Is this dry British wit? The umpteenth adaptation of a 100+ year old book is fresh and original?
Charles DIckens is not fresh.
Well either is any of the other crap coming out of Hollywood these days. Its just remake after remake .This is certainly a step up from the sewer
I get what you mean. Why is Mad Men so popular? It’s stories from, like, 40 years ago. Anything about the ’60s isn’t fresh. The only things I watch are videos posted to youtube within the last 12 hours.
Sarcasm.
Dickens maybe not new but relavant!
In my opinion she needs to chill a little bit.
Helena Bonham Carter is hot, in a Tim-Burton-With-Breasts kind of way.
Personallly i loved Charlotte Rampling as Miss Havisham, but Woolly is right – too often many eccentric characters in some English fiction are played way too old – Miss Havisham is one of them, the parents in Jane Austen books are another. Great look and perfect casting.
i just learned that miss havisham taught estella to take revenge for what happened to her on her wedding day. illike her dress also ,ideal for the role
So this is on top of BBC’s already-filmed Tv production of Great Expectations with Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham? Great. More Dickens.
“Great. More Dickens.” Since when is that a bad thing???
Great look, real Goth instead of Burton’s phony DisneyGoth. The camera loves her.
Pip darling, be a dear and fetch my suntan oil.
Can someone please explain to me why this consummate actor has never won an Oscar?
Yes, I know the Academy Awards are BS (I haven’t watched the broadcast since Kim Basinger won her undeserved award for “LA Confidential”), but this oversight is incomprehensible.
Name the last role she played that even deserved consideration. I would say it is “Wings of the Dove”. I like her presence, but, really, she has taken it easy doing sleep-walks though her half-talent common-law-husband’s films. He’s a fine illustrator, has a nice sense of design aesthetics, but he’s one of the worst storytellers being given the reigns for high-budget junk in Hollywood today. Many people are fooled by his aesthetic, though, so I give him credit for that. If it weren’t for Johnny Depp’s ability to sort of “show up” and still be engaging, TB would have no career at all.
HBC needs to get back to what made her big in the first place, serious period drama. Sadly, Merchant-Ivory is no more. Maybe one really cannot “go back”.
Dickens is/was brilliant, but his work is very broad and melodramatic. I think she needs to do “subtle” drama. Also, it helps if she’s naked a lot. I find her very attractive, another point for TB. Way to go, TB!
im sorry but i disagree with you completely. I feel that she is talented enough to win an oscar without being naked. I do as well enjoy her in her corset roles, but as an actress, i feel that she should be praised for trying to go against type casting. The last role to which she deserved an oscar, was in the kings speech for she executed her role brilliantly! Also, she is not “sleep walking” through tim burtons films. (they are not married by the way) He just happens to give her small roles, to make a point of not playing favorites (i disagree with this action) though she plays the roles perfectly. Also, i disagree with you about Tim Burton because he is very gifted at what he does, and its a revolutionary approach on animation and the movies to which he directs are executed with full consideration of the script. ( though i do agree that Johnny Depp boosts up the stamina of the film, i feel like he does that with all of his films, not just Tim’s.) and i for one, am looking forward to see what she does with the role of Miss Havisham.
Okay, I got the gist of your response.
She needs to be naked to be considered for an Academy Award, right?
Good to see that hair department didn’t have to spend hours on her hair since it’s her regular style. I bet she’ll rock this role.
This is a perfect example of an opportunity for an ORIGINAL SCRIPT to have been filmed by talented people like Mike Newell and Helena Bonham Carter, instead of giving us yet another version of this story when the 90s version with Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Robert DeNiro and Anne Bancroft was damn good (seriously, check it out, if you haven’t seen it).
Yes, it’s a classic story and probably a quality film, but wouldn’t you love to see a NEW Mike Newell film?
Some people are way too cynical. Helena Bonham Carter is a very capable actress, and cast opposite of Voldemort? It sounds and looks very promising to me. Also, that dress is fabulous!
You mean AGAIN. Cast opposite of Voldemort again. They’re like a dream team.
Loved the 1934 version best. My dog was named Pip. Can’t wait!
Wow, this looks awesome. I’ve always considered GREAT EXPECTATIONS a horror novel, and this book and it’s adaptations have scared me silly since I was 6 years old. Needless to say, I will never, ever plan a wedding. Thanks Mr. Dickens.
Have to agree. Not sure if this needs to be made again, but it’s a perfect marriage of an actress to a role. One of the more iconic Brit actresses (more, not most) taking on an iconic role.
I always wondered this about her… it seems her persona has drastically changed from the refined, elegant, and conservative actress of the Merchant Ivory pictures to the kooky, goth, dark actress of the Tim Burton films. Everytime I see her interviewed or on the red carpet she seems to be living out this Tim Burton created image. Was she always like this or did Burton have such an impact on her that she changed so dramatically in real life?
Two problems here. HBC is FAR TOO Young looking to be Miss Haversham. And yeah this looks like something Helena might have worn to her own wedding as is.. in a different color to the Oscars tomorrow. How is anyone suppose to know she’s mad.
As Dickens is one of my Favorite authors, what a perfect choice of MS. Carter as Miss Havisham! A Blend of eerie and creepy! Perfect choice!
oh my god!
She`is SO beautiful!!!
helena looks perfect for this character
i bet you
any money she will be oscer nominated
Best Supporting actress
I hope that this movie will help launch Holliday Grainger, who plays Estella, towards movie stardom.
