EXCLUSIVE: Longtime Fox 2000 EVP Carla Hacken is leaving the studio to become president of production for New Regency. It is the latest move in a restructuring of the company since Arnon Milchan reemerged as an active chairman and installed former Paramount Pictures production president Brad Weston as CEO with a mandate to become a more filmmaker-driven concern.
New Regency is partly owned by News Corp, whose 20th Century Fox distributes and often co-finances Regency-generated films. The move was orchestrated with the cooperation of Fox Filmed Entertainment co-chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman and Fox 2000 president Elizabeth Gabler.
“Jim, Tom and Liz have been great partners and are incredibly gracious about Carla,” Weston told me in confirming the move. “They see this as a terrific opportunity for her, and a great way to help support New Regency. Arnon and I couldn’t be more appreciative.”
Hacken was an ICM agent when she was brought into the Fox 2000 fold 15 years ago by Laura Ziskin. She has worked closely with Gabler and developed such films as Unfaithful, The Devil Wears Prada, Walk The Line, Bride Wars, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and its sequel, Percy Jackson & The Olympians, Love & Other Drugs and In Her Shoes.
There has long been a tradition of cross pollination between Fox and New Regency (which is based on the lot). That includes Sanford Panitch (who moved from Fox to Regency and now steers Fox International Productions) and most recently Hutch Parker and Bob Harper, who steered New Regency and exited in late August. Hacken joins Alexandra Milchan, who rejoined her father’s company as executive vice president, after a long stretch as a producer.
“Bringing Carla in is a big part of reshaping New Regency,” Weston said. “She has made terrific movies like Walk the Line and The Devil Wears Prada, she has great talent relationships and terrific taste in material. She’s the perfect fit for where we are going with the company.”
Arnon Milchan’s goal is to reestablish New Regency as a filmmaker-driven company that generates six to nine movies per year. New Regency is in production on the Mark Wahlberg-Russell Crowe-starrer Broken City; production will start next spring on the Darren Aronofsky-directed Biblical epic Noah, in partnership with Paramount; The Gray Man starts late summer with Brad Pitt and director James Gray; and the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed The Revenant starts production in September. Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio are circling the lead roles in that drama.

Carla Hacken has “made” films such as Walk the Line and Devil Wears Prada? Really? MADE? Wonder what the directors, writers, cast, and crew of those films think about that.
15 years in the biz and Carla’s one of the most miserable people I’ve ever worked with. Hooray for Hollywood.
Was going to comment first, but I wanted to wait and see if anyone else would post the truth about what a miserable, psychotic person Carla is. Thanks for making my day Mephisto! I know this for sure, having worked with her.
OMG, what a bunch of haters! Carla is a great person and a fantastic executive. the directors, writers, cast and crew of those films should be thrilled that she is being promoted because she was part of a core group of people who, yes, made Walk The Line, Prada, Family Stone, Wimpy Kid. She found, bought, developed, fought for and championed these films, protected the artists involved in them. too many haters. You haters should be thankful she is out there as the champion of quality movies. she is a delight and you are all too angry.
Whether you’re Carla herself or a friend is irrelevant. Fact is, I met this woman once, made an off-hand comment, and she yelled at me. Her co-workers looked embarrassed for her. I knew I didn’t do anything wrong, but I was young and new to the business, so I felt awful.
Yet the moment I saw this post, and saw a quick (10) comments on it, I knew that people were in a rush to slag her. You don’t have to be nice in this business, but it does help, and when you’re a downright nasty person, you should expect this sort of thing.
Instead of circling the wagons and decrying the haters, maybe take a look in the mirror.
Is it just me or are the same people just being recycled left and right?
I sadly concur with Mephisto. Carla is disorganized panicky and very unhappy. She has taste but no ability to handle stress. Brad has made terrible move. He will find out soon enough.
Rodney Ferrell would be great to run Fox 2000.
RF is a very smart studio exec.
I thought they were extinct but there are a few like him left.
Hahaha totally agree Mephisto – one of most miserable, meanest and rudest. Ugh.
i think she is great, knew her when she was a agent yeare ago, very smart !!!
congrats Carla! stfu haters
Fox 2000 really should be making some younger, less-dusty projects like the Emma Stone script that Rodney Ferrell brought in a few weeks back. That feels like a step in the right direction VS. Water For Elephants…
says the writer of said script….
Yay for Carla. She is a passionate advocate for good movies and she knows how to push films thru the crazy path to production. She will be a great addition to New Regency…….she and Brad W both actually have good taste, a rarity these days.
have to agree with some of the folks above – lurking behind that ‘smile’ in the photo is a continual sneer.
Uhhhhhh. So, the new regency offices will now house brad weston, Alexandra Milchan, and Carla hacken? Sounds like a blast. Gonna be some great karma going around that place. Wonder who comes out in the top of that heap
Great move.
Today is the day the hope died at New Regency. God I hope Brad is looking over these comments and coming the understand the heinous error he has just made.
Good for Carla, a class act with great taste, and she does not panic unless perhaps she is on the phone with you and struggling to get off. Great for New Regency, Carla and Weston. However how does Kara Francis Smith still have her job? She must have pictures of Arnon.
Well I hope she gets her head out of Hollywood and beat it down to New Orleans…a troubled production with no support from the studio. cheap and more cheap…bettheduck
She was once mean to me for no reason at all.
i worked with her at icm, and she was mean , and crazy!
Jeff..
Anyone who says “yeah” for this move clearly doesn’t know what is going on. Yet again, arnon shows a reluctance to simply put one person in charge and trust the decision. The fox/regency recycle machine keeps chugging. That boutique makes no money and is staffed, from creative to production, with a group that outsiders prefer to never work for….brad could have loosened up and improved the culture there a bit. That’s less likely now. Yawn.
Congratulations Carla! I worked with her at Triad and have known her for over 25 years. She is incredibly bright, hard working, and has great taste!
Yeah you worked with her 35 years ago. And dealt with her socially I imagine. She is perfectly charming and bright until you are making a film. Jesus. Then she’s the worst– a nightmare. inarticulate. nasty. gossipy. Threats. Phone hang ups. And ill informed.
I heard Carla once shot a man. Just to watch him bleed.
Heard all the bad stuff for years. Then I did a project with her. It was a wonderful, supportive experience
Carla has great taste, will respect filmmakers she trusts, who work hard and has no problem speaking her mind.
If you have thin skin maybe you should quit your day job, get a netflix streaming account and only shop at Trader Joe’s.
yeah, she’s AWFUL: i heard she dislikes bad scripts and never hires untalented people. hate her.
carla is often kind for no apparent reason. there’s no room for her in this business.
I’ve developed and made films with almost every major. Dealt with scores of executives. Hundreds, actually. Hands down, Carla Hacken is THE most articulate, elegant, tasteful and doggedly loyal executive I have ever had the opportunity to work with. Big score for team Milchan.
You are full of shit. Carla is well known for being a nightmare. And having worked at 2000 as an assistant, I can assure that there is fire behind that smoke.
Truthiness — I’m right there with ya! Been in the assistant pool at 2000 and I know this firsthand. Good luck to New Regency. And really, who gives a crap? Their fault for making such a bad decision.
