Obviously 20th Century Fox must be excited about Cameron Crowe’s We Bought A Zoo because the studio has just decided to sneak it four weeks ahead of the film’s December 23rd bow. The nationwide sneaks of the holiday picture will take place on Saturday, November 26th during Thanksgiving Weekend, one of the busiest moviegoing times of the year as well as Christmas when there’s a lot of releases all at once. In a statement, Oren Aviv and Tony Sella, the studio’s marketing mavens, said: “Once in a while, we’re lucky enough to have a picture to which audiences of all kinds and all ages respond so strongly, that it demands a big and unexpected event. We Bought A Zoo is that kind of picture – and Thanksgiving is a great time to share it via this special very early preview.” The idea is to generate very early word of mouth, so necessary in these times of slumping box office. The studio claims test screenings of the film in both major cities and the heartland have produced “exceptional responses across wide-ranging demographics so the Studio is using one family holiday to prime the release for the next holiday”.
How Fox is going about the sneaks is different than usual, using social media outreach. The studio is partnering with the social media service TOUT for a “TOUT Takeover”. Attendees can TOUT their reviews of the film, and present their own experiences involving “20 Seconds of Courage” – playing off a key theme of the movie. One TOUT entry will win a trip for four, to the San Diego Zoo’s “Ultimate Zoo Experience.” The social media outreach will also include a live chat with Cameron Crowe following the film showings, and tie-ins with Twitter, Facebook, and so on. Crowe said in a statement, “I’m really excited about these sneaks. Holding previews so far ahead of our opening is a bold move – but that’s one of the many reasons I like it.” We Bought A Zoo stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, and Thomas Haden Church, and was co-written by Crowe with Aline Brosh McKenna, and produced with Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn.

I hate zoos. If this movie doesn’t end with them reintroducing all the animals into the wild, or at least trying to, then I will hate it. Hell, I’d picket it if someone would join me. But I don’t actually know how it ends, so the jury’s out!
Really, ‘father merrin,’ really?
I shrink in the face of your withering, pithy criticism.
LOL…
Best combo-post of the day.
I saw a trailer for We Bought a Zoo. Now I have diabetes.
I also hate zoos. This is just too close to that situation in Ohio with the exotic animals. Hope they include some kind of disclaimer.
I’m pretty sure Matt Damon carries a shotgun in this movie and lays the law down near the end of the film.
Ooops, spoiler alert!
Can’t wait to see this wonderful movie, super cast and creme de la creme crew!!!
I love how these social media firms are such “experts” when the majority of their audience has been using social media a lot longer than they have. And Tout’s claim to “legitimacy” is a backdoor deal made by Shaq when he announced his retirement.
I wish the film well but I get tired of these marketers who think they know how to manipulate an audience when, in fact, they haven’t got a single clue as to how to get people to buy (or see) their product.
Interesting enough, the working title for this film was “We Bought a Dud.”
Where is “We Ate a Zoo?”
The one sheet is adorable.
More like “We Bought a Zzz”
TR hates the Internet. They will buy lots of Television.
But that’s a smart move on the studio’s part to premiere this on a Saturday as they knew The Muppets would kick everyone’s asses for the holiday weekend and this would probably finish a distant second, in case there were others who wanted to see something different, but they should have premiered this on the first Friday in December to get a wider audience.
The Muppets aren’t going to kick anyone’s ass. Jeez.
why are so many people dissing other people’s hard work? making movies is a very tough job.
This movie looks AWFUL and I like most of Crowe’s films.
Cynical , Snarky movie people. What a surprise. I saw the movie and it’s a beautiful inspiring film unlike the kind of crappy tentpole movies most studio folks make these days. Why don’t you actually go see a movie for a change.
Good movie or no, this is the studio giving up on the films potential. The dropoff after Thanksgiving is so extreme that films don’t recover from it.
(Blinks) Did you guys actually ‘read’ the article? “We Bought a Zoo” will premiere on Friday, December 23, 2011, but the Studio is so excited about the film, they’ve decided to have a ‘sneak preview’ on Saturday, November 26, 2011. The studio is hoping that word of mouth from the Thanksgiving Holiday crowd will bring the Christmas Holiday crowd in to see the film as well. It’s really a pretty good strategy.
Saw sneek peek and this Movie should win Picture of the Year and numerous Academy Awards/Oscars!
