FX has passed on its Nashville-set drama pilot Outlaw Country while keeping its other pilot, Powers, alive. Powers, based on the comic book of the same name, will undergo retooling and reshoots. The decision on Outlaw Country comes after it too went through tweaking and reshoots on the original pilot. The crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime and Nashville royalty starred Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes. It went through a long and arduous process: it was originally ordered to pilot in April 2010, which was filmed last fall and then put through reshoots this past April. In March, FX president John Landgraf indicated that he wanted to launch a new drama series this coming winter, with Outlaw Country and Powers as the main contenders. That won’t happen. Based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, Powers, written by Charles H. Eglee, directed by Michael Dinner and produced by Sony TV and FX Prods., is a police procedural set in a world where superpowers are relatively common. It centers on two detectives, Christian Walker (Jason Patric) and Deena Pilgrim (Punch), in a Homicide department that deals with cases involving “powers” (people with superpowers).

Does that mean Powers will definitely be picked up? Since that’s the only pilot they have in development?
Oh well as long future programming is as intelligent as TERRIERS. I’ll tune in. As for AMH didn’t even bother knowing Ryan Murphy history with television.
Outlaw Country sounded cool — must have tested terribly, right? John Hawkes is such a terrific actor.
Powers is probably a lock to get on the air in some form or another, just because they spent a fortune pulling this out of feature development, but this news means whatever they shot was unwatchable and tested unacceptably low and now it sounds like a lot of new executive notes and writing has to take place and new casting too? Jason Patric and Lucy Punch can’t hang around forever. As is, it’s shaping up as a bit of a mess especially considering the huge, smooth, zeitgiest-capturing win Landgraf has had with “American Horror Story,” which breezed through development and got the fastest series order I can recall at FX. But if you don’t hit the bullseye with Powers, you might as well pack up your ball and go home because the special effects aren’t cheap.
The big problem with this comic book property is that it’s fairly “meta” and lacks real originality. Because it’s filled with “pastiche” characters that are repetitive plays on existing superheroes, the viewer really needs a working knowledge of comics to get half the references.
The tone is perfect for the page (where the reader makes his own adjustments in his head to make the concoction go down easier) but a little corny — think “Mystery Men” or “The Tick” — when you translate it to live action. The art in the comic is highly stylized but with actors on sets it can look lame for a guy to show up in full, pimped-out superhero costume at an otherwise grim, gritty police station. I guess the show “Grimm” is pulling this kind of thing off?
Also I think just hearing that Jason Patric was in this meant you knew there would be problems. Good luck but this is not a good sign, especially as FX is moving on to newer shinier scripts. There’s a reason Powers has been languishing in development of some form or another for ten years. It’s highly problematic material.
Word from FX is that Jason Patric is the only good thing in it.
When a story about realistic characters in realistic situations with realistic choices is dumped for a Comic Book, Well, that is truly sad.
I wonder if “Outlaw Country” was felt to be a little to close in tone/subject to “Justified”, and somehow suffered in comparison.
Can’t say that I’m all that interested in “Powers”, but we shall see.
And David Alpert keeps trying. You have to be impressed- what he lacks in integrity he makes up for in tenacity.
Luke Grimes is amazing. Sad.
Maybe community can continue on fx
Very much looking forward to ‘Powers’. It’s really straightforward intriguing concept very well suited for episodic television and it’s great someone finally optioned a pilot for it.
PLEASE! Enough of shows about Superpowers”. Been DONE and Done and DONE! How many more are you going to throw down our throats. “Interested Observer” said it perfectly. And Jason Patric?…this only gets worse.
And Jason Patric… this only gets worse?
Really? Apparently you havent seen AFTER DARK MY SWEET,RUSH, YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS, or NARC. Just four films he should have been nominated for.
Just Tivo American Horror Story you sad sack no taste.
I have no interest in anything FX makes, but I’m really hoping they make Powers. The comic is excellent. Try to make it like Walking Dead, not Human Target.
Too bad. I worked on Outlaw Country 3 days. 2 in Dickson, TN Oct., 2010 and 1 day in Springfield, TN in July, 2011. It seemed sweet, but I guess not.
